...where we can complain about the skyrocketing costs of fuel, share stories of having gas siphoned, argue about the best Vespas, etc.

friend of mine who sells scooters says that the dealership is almost completely sold out of bikes at the moment -- and that about 50% of the sales were made to lesbians

Not quite gas prices, but the increase in oil prices has increased the price of producing vinyl, which has led to the company my wife works for having to make some redundancies this week :(

I've been trying to get a carpool going in my area, but for some reason nobody else in the same boat works an 8-5 schedule - they're all like 7:30 - 3:30 or some such shit

Beatrix Kiddo, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 17:08 (seventeen years ago)

The longest round-trip commute I have during the week is 12 miles. I hate $4 gasoline too, but it's still cheaper and more efficient than the bus.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 17:17 (seventeen years ago)

I envy you! My round-trip commute's like 2 1/2 hours long.

Beatrix Kiddo, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 17:22 (seventeen years ago)

cheaper, really?

Jordan, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 17:24 (seventeen years ago)

This situation has been like a charging rhino that came over the horizon some time ago. It only seems like the rhino's moving much faster because it's right on top of us now. Between the flimsy dollar and the onset of peak oil conditions, it's time we all got used to this in a hurry.

Aimless, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 17:56 (seventeen years ago)

What's amazed me, thus far, is that the vast majority of people seem to be adjusting okay. No riots yet, you know?

Beatrix Kiddo, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 17:59 (seventeen years ago)

cheaper, really?

Yeah. And I'm not crazy about it, but that's the way it is.

I could only ride the bus on days I don't have to take the kid to daycare. Three days a week - 12 days a month.

The cheapest fare is $34 for a month. That works out to be $2.83 a day.

My commute on those days is only 8 miles. Say I get 16 mpg, that uses 6 gallons of gas in a month. $24 a month = $2 a day.

I park at a free lot. The insurance and maintenance is next to nothing, and even that, those minor expenses save me hours and hours.

Keep in mind that I live in a town that's very car-friendly. The buses run in twenty-minute increments during rush hours. The nearest stop is almost a mile away.

I would even consider bicycling to work, hills and all, were it not for the fact that I don't think my co-workers want to work next to a sweaty and smelly animal all day. (A paper-towel bath in the rest room ain't gonna fix that.)

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 18:02 (seventeen years ago)

I fully expect gas prices to wipe out most if not all of the profits of the tour I'm doing in the fall.

High prices drive $4,000 in fuel thefts

Two brothers are in jail in Anderson County tonight, charged with stealing gas and diesel, and not just a tankful--more than $4,000 worth.

Police arrested Troy Jackson and his younger brother Robert in Oak Ridge Monday morning. "Early in my career we would have people steal for equipment, trucks, petty stuff," said Oak Ridge Police Chief David Beams.

Now that gas has hit another all-time high at $4.00 a gallon, some people are stooping to all new lows.

"You never know whether we caught up with them on their first trip or their most recent," said Chief Beams. Firefighters got tipped off when they were cleaning a drum of diesel spilled near the intersection of Florida and Tennessee Avenues in Oak Ridge at about 2:15 a.m. Monday.

They then saw and smelled a trailer hauling many more drums and contacted police.

"They had 9 55-gallon drums on the trailer, a 30-gallon drum, and the fuel tank off an old truck," Beams said. "Each of the containers had a certain amount of gasoline or diesel fuel."

Investigators believe the brothers stole the fuel from a nearby Phillips 66 gas station. Right now, they're trying to figure out how but believe the men took it straight from underground tanks. They also think they may have had some help.

"As the gas prices continue, this sort of stuff will continue to be a problem," Beams said.

Both brothers are charged with theft. Troy's bond is set at $20,000. Robert has an additional probation violation charge, so his is a little higher at $ 20,500.

Police: Calif. arsonist was protesting gas prices

DANVILLE, Calif. (AP) — Police in the San Francisco Bay area say a woman set fires in the restrooms of two gas stations and a coffee house and told them she did it to protest high gas prices.

No structural damage was reported at the Arco station, the Chevron station and the Starbucks in Danville where fires were set Wednesday using fireplace logs and a lighter.

Police say they later found 64-year-old Diane Craig at a nearby fast food restaurant with eight fireplace logs with her. Authorities say she told officers that she was behind the fires and that she woke up that morning wanting to do something about high gas prices.

Craig was arrested on suspicion of premeditated arson and burglary.

Police say they don't know why the Starbucks was targeted.

Fireplace logs means those composite things you see piled up by the exits of supermarkets, right?

How much is your insurance? Did your vehicle cost money to purchase?

kingkongvsgodzilla, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 12:21 (seventeen years ago)

8 miles? that about 35-40 mins on a bike, more work places need to install showers and change facilities.

Jarlrmai, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 12:34 (seventeen years ago)

I filled up my car at the weekend; it cost about $8.60/gal. But then again, I'm in Britain.

Forest Pines Mk2, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 12:42 (seventeen years ago)

$4/gallon still cheaper than $1.65/litre.

SeekAltRoute, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 12:44 (seventeen years ago)

argue about the best Vespas

Fuck that motorcycle. Well, I would actually, but I can't be arsed to spend 3000 euros on it. It looks GREBT but I have two kids, don't actually need a motorcycle. (Read: I'll probably get a cheapo keeway or something)

Silly me is NOW getting a driver's license, now that the prices are hellahigh. hah

1.) Minimal, as I stated above.
2.) It was pretty cheap, less expensive than some guitars I've seen.

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

high gas prices are making an interstate move much more expensive than we'd anticipated. Hadn't thought of the touring musicians - I wonder how many non-obvious things are going to get more expensive as a result of this.

toby, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 16:06 (seventeen years ago)

Everything gets more expensive, nothing gets cheaper, apart from new SUVs :)

we had a big august vacation planned that we're trying to get out of - it all depends on whether or not the beach house in VA we were gonna stay in gets a new renter between now and then. if that doesn't happen we're going, because otherwise we'll (meaning me, my wife, my in-laws, my wife's bro and his family) lose a ton of money.

3 SUVs traveling from central PA to VA Beach = crazy fuel costs
