So, who's had to put up with this thing yet?

I think it's an interesting collision of modern media and modern American food practices. If there's a certain mass tomato producer with contaminated stock, how do you let people know about it without freaking out the populace?

this happened with spinach a few years ago and I recall that the outbreak was tracked back to one or two suppliers w/ national distributions; the point being that the LOCAL PRODUCERS who were not to blame were being hit because Media was all like 'O FUCK SPINACHES = DETHOMG." So... buy local.

This started in MY city of residence. Thank you, thank you. Please, quit lauding me.

I am standing outside my tomato plants with a gun, in case you were wondering about the only safe tomatoes in Cruces.

I missed having tomatoes on my Jimmy John's sandwich today. :/

jaymc, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 22:52 (seventeen years ago)

My tomatoes won't be in for some time.

kingfish, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 23:05 (seventeen years ago)

A scientist explained on NPR yesterday why simple washing won't make the tomatoes safe: Salmonella could have entered into the tomato thru the stem-scar, if they were washed in contaminated water.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 23:07 (seventeen years ago)

So this is probably why the cafe this morning had no tomatoes for my bagel with tomatoes that I eat every day. I went across the street to a less nice deli and bought some to add. Salmonella = loads of sick days home from work?

Laurel, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 23:41 (seventeen years ago)

thank u libcrypt, I was wondering about that.

centralized mass-produced food distribution is the root cause here, we'll see more stuff like this until oil-based transport becomes too expensive (which should happen in, oh, five years at most).
