so does every former soviet republic get their own big-budget historical epic now? did anyone see either of these? when do we get TIGRANES THE ARMEN?

amateurist, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 08:58 (seventeen years ago)

apparently this is what the cultural ministries of these republics are investing in instead of helping to finance smaller films. folks complain b/c they are directed by and typically star foreigners (americans, russians, etc.). and somehow i doubt that NOMAD was successful in transforming the image of kazakhstan damaged by BORAT.

Is Mongol good? I only found out about it yesterday. Or is it just John Wayne in a comedy moustache again?

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 09:01 (seventeen years ago)

Seeing posters saying "MONGOL IN CINEMAS JUNE 6" makes me piss laughing, I'm all for it

MPx4A, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 09:02 (seventeen years ago)

Oh noes new Adam Sandler movie etc etc

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 09:04 (seventeen years ago)

Mongol is pretty stupid, too much CGI, confusing and inept story structure, nice scenery though. Asano is good as Genghis Khan, although he's too tall. Then again, you try and find a short actor. Who's going to play him, Danny DeVito? I think not.

s1ocki, Sunday, 27 July 2008 01:20 (seventeen years ago)

a real mongol

max, Sunday, 27 July 2008 01:28 (seventeen years ago)

Mongol was pretty great! I thought. It is long though. Probably not the best movie to see if you're looking for constant stimulation, there are long contemplative parts.

J0hn D., Sunday, 27 July 2008 02:51 (seventeen years ago)

you found?

i thought it was a pretty straight-up adventure movie and paced as such

and that it was awesome

s1ocki, Sunday, 27 July 2008 05:53 (seventeen years ago)

my friend is very cool and brutally honest. she's from russia and is not always right, but she likes some very good films (according to her facebook: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Annie Hall, Ghosts of Cite Soleil, Being John Malkovich, Grey Gardens and Children of Men). her name is olga.

the trailer reminded me too much of peter jackson, which is not a good thing. i might give it a chance, but i'm more likely to give mr. lonely my $6 (not that its trailer is blowing me away either). i'm going to go watch eraserhead, goodnight.
