I realise there are other threads for discussing the books themselves. This question is specifically about the animals all the characters are accompanied by. When a person is a child, their daemon is changeable and reflects their state of mind or changes to help and comfort them (becoming a bat to see at night, etc.). Then they settle into their form when people grow up.
The question is not what kind of animal you would like to have sitting on your shoulder and following you everywhere, but what animal most closely resembles your personality.

Mine would be a land animal, something fairly solitary but observant, perhaps an owl.
― Maria :D, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 23:44 (seventeen years ago)
coyote who loves el-p
― and what, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 23:51 (seventeen years ago)
Maybe a cat, but the friendly scruffy lazy kind rather than the cool and slinky kind.
― chap, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 23:57 (seventeen years ago)
Cuscus!
― Abbott, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 23:58 (seventeen years ago)
Definately an owl as well - a bat comes close but seems to raging for me. I only 'see' (inward and outward) clearly at night, it's where peace be found. Alonish and observant, check. Although sometimes I'm the scared straight mouse chased by the owls though.

My 5-year-old son has carried around a Curious George doll most of the time since he was born. It has become his daemon.
I was totally obsessed with dolphins as a kid, but if you had that as a daemon, you'd have to spend all your time on boats.
― Maria :D, Thursday, 12 June 2008 02:40 (seventeen years ago)
Awwww. Curious George daemon is so cute sounding. I have to think about the answer to this for myself. Interesting . . .
― ENBB, Thursday, 12 June 2008 02:45 (seventeen years ago)
No question, a cat.

The movie promotion included a daemon generator. I think mine was a field mouse. :^P
― j.lu, Thursday, 12 June 2008 03:06 (seventeen years ago)
According to that, my daemon is a chimp named Gabriel. It would be great to have a monkey daemon.
― Maria :D, Thursday, 12 June 2008 03:11 (seventeen years ago)
Amantha the Chimp
― milo z, Thursday, 12 June 2008 03:15 (seventeen years ago)
Hmm, apparently mine is a fox. Named Aenid.
― Abbott, Thursday, 12 June 2008 03:16 (seventeen years ago)
How funny! I'm just re-reading these, watched the movie the other day but it was kind of underwhelming, I thought, and oddly paced. Almost done with SUBTLE KNIFE right now. This thread being first in New Answers is sort of reading my mind.
― Laurel, Thursday, 12 June 2008 03:20 (seventeen years ago)
I have to say cat, just because my cats ARE my constant companions. Except for Monster, who moved across the street. But he's still mine! He's just getting better food over there.
Excited to take that quiz, tho!
― aimurchie, Thursday, 12 June 2008 03:29 (seventeen years ago)
Awesome! A raccoon! Very fond of raccoons in general.
― aimurchie, Thursday, 12 June 2008 03:38 (seventeen years ago)

― Maria :D, Thursday, 12 June 2008 04:32 (seventeen years ago)
Owl is perfect for you, Maria:D, since you have the ability to sleep standing up.
― aimurchie, Thursday, 12 June 2008 04:57 (seventeen years ago)

that's closer to my ideal (otter) so yup. xp.
― ledge, Thursday, 12 June 2008 18:31 (seventeen years ago)
Ermine = stoat, right... And y'all know the difference between a weasel and a stoat? A weasel's weasily recognised but a stoat's stoatally different.
― ledge, Thursday, 12 June 2008 18:33 (seventeen years ago)
Awwww, otter is a good one!!
Hoos - nothing wrong with Ermine. I just think a chimp would more entertaining and if this companion is going to be with me 24/7 he'd better be amusing.
