RIP Eliot Asinof, author of 'Eight Men Out'

A long life lived. Eight Men Out's a wonderful book and while the John Sayles film couldn't pack it all in, it's still a damn good version of the story that works in its own right, and has one of my favorite John Cusack performances to boot. (Though I think my favorite line might be David Strathairn's softly crushed "We were crooked" admission.)

Anyway, read the book when you can. Very glad I did before I finally saw the movie.

Talk about some bullshit:

During the McCarthy era, Asinof was blacklisted and had to resort to writing under the names of other writers, his son said. Years later, after he obtained his FBI file, he told his son that he had been targeted because he once signed a petition outside Yankee Stadium saying that black ballplayer Jackie Robinson should be allowed to play in the major leagues.

I love America.

five years pass...

It's pretty much agreed that Asinof wan't much of a researcher, and got lots of stuff wrong in 8MO.

There was a Black Sox / 50th anniversary of 8MO panel I attended at the SABR convention, which included Buck Weaver's 86-year-old niece.
