This thread also reminds me of how "Asian" now does double duty, referring both to East Asians and also to anyone from Turkey to Japan to Siberia to Ceylon.
― M.V., Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:55 (seventeen years ago)
anyone from Turkey to Japan to Siberia to Ceylon.
Well, this is literally what is meant by the word "Asian," it's just that in the U.S. most of the "Asians" you meet have traditionally been East Asians, just as in the U.K. most of the "Asians" have been South Asian, and so the term carries those respective connotations.
― Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 22:59 (seventeen years ago)
Note, there's no longer an unambiguous, unracist single-word epithet for East Asian comparable to "Anglo" or "Hispanic," though maybe there needn't or shouldn't be.
(The word "epithet" does similar double duty, funnily enough.)
― M.V., Tuesday, 24 February 2009 23:26 (seventeen years ago)
Gary Locke is not going to run for, let alone be, President
Bobby Jindal has a reasonable chance of being on a ticket in 8 years, maybe even 4 (unlikely), and may be threatened more by religion than his ethnicity

As a national candidate, Jindal is nothing but downside - he's a generic crazy rightwing christian nutbag, but isn't white and thus is gonna turn off at least *some* of that base. The racist-in-a-different-way GOP leadership likes him cause he's brown and obv. that's all it takes to be president these days, but I don't see him getting far in the primaries.
― iatee, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 00:19 (seventeen years ago)
Jindal is, like any other good candidate, a good communicator. what's gonna hurt him is not the color of his skin, but the fucked-up things he has at times communicated.

― double bird strike (gabbneb), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 00:30 (seventeen years ago)
I don't see why 8 makes more sense than 4 - obv 8 years is a LONG time away in politics - but I don't think it's crazy to say that Obama's not gonna win re-election if the economy hasn't significantly improved. but if it has, stimulus bill is gonna be looked upon as reason #1 - meanwhile Jindal's been setting himself as the public face of the anti-stimulus movement. as such, would think best hope is 4 years from now, economy in the toliet.

whatever obama's poll numbers, four years from now:1) barack obama will remain the most-skilled, most-iconic, best-known, and perhaps most popular figure on the political landscape, perhaps by far2) bobby jindal will be barely-40 and if elected, the youngest President in history

Meantime, from a fellow commenter at Balloon Juice:
I guess Jindal was worse than I thought. I thought he was "Meh" but certainly not in Palin territory. Then I come in to work and even the most wingnutty of Republicans in my office are visibly angry at how bad he was. As one of them put it, "When he started to give the Sesame Street version of African American history, I almost threw my beer at the TV."
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 14:59 (seventeen years ago)
Jindal pushed back on the notion of big government, saying, "Today in Washington, some are promising that [big government] will rescue us from the economic storms raging all around us."Those of us who lived through Hurricane Katrina -- we have our doubts."
"Those of us who lived through Hurricane Katrina -- we have our doubts."

Emilio Aguinaldo y Famy (March 22, 1869 – February 6, 1964) was a Filipino revolutionary, politician, and a military leader who is officially recognized as the First President of the Philippines (1899–1901) and first president of a constitutional republic in Asia.
