The twelve playing pieces currently used are pictured at left (from left to right): a wheelbarrow (1937b edition), a battleship, a sack of money (1999 editions onwards), a horse and rider, a car, a train (Deluxe Edition only), an old fashioned thimble, a cannon, an old style shoe (sometimes called a boot), a Scottie dog, an iron, and a top hat.

I am leaving the sack of money and the train out of this poll. Fuck that nu-breed shit.

I agree wholeheartedly. The world needs more Monopoly playing-piece slash fiction.

dell, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 19:32 (seventeen years ago)

OH wait, that was a rep for the top hat. I thought you were saying this poll rocks

dell, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 19:33 (seventeen years ago)

iron = easily the most boring and banal. fuck an iron.

Jordan, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 19:34 (seventeen years ago)

Jordan, if that's the truly way you think, then we can never be united in holy matrimony.

THEE IRON

I made a whole song as a kid about "ironing my way to the win" (success, the bank, etc.).

Abbott, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 20:25 (seventeen years ago)

I used to use the iron to keep my 500's nice and flat if I was winning to rub my opponents faces in it.

Jarlrmai, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 20:31 (seventeen years ago)

Horse and rider? Cannon? wtf. never heard of 'em.

top hat for life

sleep, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 21:36 (seventeen years ago)

Dog, train, car and boat all move IRL so were fun to move around the board, handbrake turn the car into just visiting.

Jarlrmai, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 21:37 (seventeen years ago)

i used to imagine there was a man wearing a top hat submerged in the board and only his hat was sticking out above the surface... ??

sleep, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 21:38 (seventeen years ago)

i didnt make a lot of sense when i was 8

sleep, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 21:38 (seventeen years ago)

Top Hat is the king, it had weight and is a style icon as indicated by the fact the dapper monopoly man is wearing one.

Jarlrmai, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 21:39 (seventeen years ago)

i was always the car as a kid, but top hat wins on aesthetics and tactility

gabbneb, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 21:39 (seventeen years ago)

apparently i did not play with the deluxe edition. also, i do not recall the battleship.

gabbneb, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 21:40 (seventeen years ago)

The cheapo edition we have only has hat-iron-dog-boot-car-boat. I can't imagine playing Monopoly with twelve people, how long would it take? And we play "last man standing" rules.

snoball, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 21:44 (seventeen years ago)

i recall wheelbarrow, horse and rider, car, thimble, shoe, dog, iron and hat

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 21:53 (seventeen years ago)

size matters

tiny little itty battleship that mostly fits in a top hat or thimble wins

that or monstrous battleship sized dog

PappaWheelie V, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 22:00 (seventeen years ago)

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 22:38 (seventeen years ago)

Thimble!

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 22:54 (seventeen years ago)

the scottie dog makes me think of such a dog running through the lobby of a posh atlantic city hotel, causing havok to ensue, bellhops to tumble, and suitcases full of lingerie to spring open! and other kinds of early-20th century mischief. he's a millionaire mutt with a nose for a good deal!

though maybe that is just my own personal story about the scotty dog, don't know if anyone else gets that sort of madcap impression

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 22:59 (seventeen years ago)

that, and you could tilt your scotty dog onto its side legs so it looked like he was pissing on your opponent's hotels

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Horse and rider? Cannon? wtf. never heard of 'em.

I second this. Also, I don't think I ever thought of our ship as a battleship. It looked more like a barge. We lost the racing car quite early on.

My sister always got to be the Scottie dog. I agree that that top hat is classy and the true winner, but for some reason I always ended up being the iron and retain my affection for that downtrodden piece.

Alba, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 23:05 (seventeen years ago)

people who chose the iron are most likely class and gender role conscious. It's all about the downtrodden making the system their own!

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 23:06 (seventeen years ago)

Scottie dog, obvs.

Bodrick III, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 23:14 (seventeen years ago)

I'm the contrary one here as I always took the horse and rider.

Battleship is interloping from another game. Go back to C-4 or whatever square square spawned you and get busy sinking.

You can actually buy the Monopoly money separately. For the high rollers I guess. But you could buy some and have it stashed up your sleeves of something.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 15:52 (sixteen years ago)

I love the dog, everyone loves the dog, but I used to get stuck playing Monopoly with my money-obsessed brother, who usually opted for the cannon or the top hat. So I always chose the car, noting that it is action-oriented and says that he shouldn't mess with me.

US EEL (u s steel), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 15:56 (sixteen years ago)

In order: top hat - roadster - iron - boot - thimble - dog

I don't recognise the others - though wheelbarrow is quite cool, and if full of money certainly beats the sack of dosh hands down

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 16:00 (sixteen years ago)

The best thing about the iron is it is one of those old stick-it-in-a-burning-fire irons. It's made of metal, and maybe some v tiny person could actually use it to iron if they had a tiny fire and some tiny wrinkled clothes and a tiny ironing board.

vacation to outer darkness (Abbott), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 16:57 (sixteen years ago)

Marge: "That game is crazy enough as it is! How can an iron be a landlord?"

BTW, I'm frightfully middle-class (chap), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 17:03 (sixteen years ago)

Maybe that's the appeal of the thimble, too, tho the tiny person who could use thew Monopoly thimble as a real thimble would be considerably less tiny than the tiny person who could use the Monopoly iron as a real iron, at whatever tiny sweatshop employs the two to work with tiny textiles.

vacation to outer darkness (Abbott), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 17:03 (sixteen years ago)

four months pass...

man I just played this for the first time yesterday, except it was the Disney edition. I chose Dumbo because I figure he could just fly willy nilly all over the board instead of being confined to the boring ground-dwelling linearity of cinderella and snow white et al.

we also played monopoly deal, a card version which is vastly better because you can actually WIN convincingly.
