Duel of the Lambs: "Manhunter" vs. "Silence..."

I'm excluding "Hannibal" because I thought it was a dumb movie. :) But anyway...

Several arenas of contention here:

Lector: I think Cox' Lector is brilliant in its own way, should have gotten more screen time. "Would you like to leave me your home phone number, Will?"

FBI agent: I like Clarice more...I *hate* that cop-who's-so-empathic-he/she-'becomes'-the-serial-killer stuff, but I guess it was less of a cliche when Manhunter came out...

Serial Killer (Tooth Fairy vs. Buffalo Bill): Both pretty scary...

Directorial style: Michael Mann vs. Jonathan Demme. Hmmm, have to think about that one...

Manhunter

Andy K, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

silence of the lambs.

ethan, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Neither--Manhunter's boring* and Silence of the Lambs is dumb.

*Note that I've only seen the director's cut, which is always worse than the regular movie, so the real cut may be really good. Director's cut=garbage "revenge of the auteur crap" which is even worse than "Revenge of the Nerds."

adam, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would say the 'real' cut of Manhunter is better than the director's cut.

Yeah. Silence. By miles.

I like Manhunter a lot, what a cool small unusual movie. But The Silence of the Lambs is a fucking great movie.

J0hn D., Tuesday, 28 August 2007 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

Silence by kilometers. Tho I love Manhunter as well. So maybe by centimeters.

mannhunter is really good though

latebloomer, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

Part of why Silence wins, it's endlessly quotable. Actually that could be why one wouldn't pick it: so many like to quote it at inappropriate times.

Manhunter, tho I'm not as gaga over it as most people who would chose it over Silence.

i liked red dragon just as much as manhunter and silence. might even be my favourite if ralph fiennes looked more like dolarhyde.

, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 18:10 (eighteen years ago)

that cop-who's-so-empathic-he/she-'becomes'-the-serial-killer stuff

I think this is missing the point of Will Graham. The deal with Graham isn't empathy or "getting into the mind of the killer"; it's a lot simpler: He has the mind of a killer. He thinks the same way a sociopath does, and with a few different decisions here or there, he'd be one.

Phil D., Tuesday, 28 August 2007 22:57 (eighteen years ago)

Mann is one of my favorite directors, but Silence ages better. Manhunter features a terrible song in the closing credits, "Heartbeat" -- sounds like Glenn Frey. Killer's shirt (Comme Des Garcons?) is beautiful, as is Shriekback's "This Big Hush".

Eazy, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 23:02 (eighteen years ago)

Silence is definitely the better film; I don't know what some critics see in Manhunter at all.

Duane Barry, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 23:13 (eighteen years ago)

superhyper Mann stylee!

kenan, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 23:14 (eighteen years ago)

But Silence is the better film.

kenan, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 23:14 (eighteen years ago)

omg have we had a michael mann poll yet?

kenan, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 23:15 (eighteen years ago)

Silence wins because Joan Allen isn't in it playing a blind woman.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 23:19 (eighteen years ago)

Silence's baroque, spiralling, superhuman arc just makes for a 200% better thrillride, I don't see how one could see it differently on that level. Manhunter is very good though.

He thinks the same way a sociopath does, and with a few different decisions here or there, he'd be one
see, I definitely think we're asked to read this into it but it isn't asserted/supported nearly enough on film, and not in the right ways (if anything, W. Petersen's performance is ultimately a bit too insular and it, along with some directing choices, makes for a more austere experience. The austerity also helps give the violence a bit more jarring emphasis than in lambs but that's not the stuff 'enjoyment' is made of for me, really)

Finally saw Manhunter last night part-inspired by mention on action movies thread. What a weird movie! Kind of loved the soundtrack, though.

i don't think a soundtrack pulled me out of an otherwise awesome movie so much until there will be blood.

xp yes but the soundtrack is good on its own merits even if it is poured on molasses thick. Also I guess I didnt think the movie was awesome, it was pretty good.

I discovered Shriekback's great Oil and Gold album through this movie.

Also: terrible end-credits song.

Aforementioned closing-credits song (with its Synclavier specs listed in the credits): two parts Peter Gabriel + two parts Richard Marx.

manhunter's great but i'd probably go w/silence at this point. it has an almost inexplicably creepy vibe that it sustains throughout the entire movie, something that goes beyond the subject matter and has everything to do with how it's directed. i think part of it are the settings demme chose, which iirc involve a lot of autumn trees, empty little industrial areas in the fall, this sense of nobody being out in the open and everyone who's not in the narrative just hiding away from something, behind doors or in basements or locked away in prison. and the way the camera shadows jodie foster throughout the movie, from the opening shot. and from the way she's framed. and her POV shots. even something like the end, when she's on the phone w/lecter and we see her POV of scott glenn and it's unnerving and i don't even know why.

i can't quite pin it down and that's probably a bad way to put it.

Watching manhunter again, I guess like a lot of Michael Mann flix it's comfort food to an extent. The best sequence here is the one where they find the note from dolarhyde in hannibal's cell and set to work on trying to analyze it before Hannibal notices it's missing. I love the *~~process~~* in that scene. All of it leading into them trying to bait dolarhyde w/will graham but he goes after Freddie lounds instead.

omar little, Tuesday, 6 June 2023 16:35 (two years ago)

I love the *~~process~~* in that scene.

its like a sum up of all the police procedural movies/shows in my head.

Noonan shouting "Get this to the print boys at Langley! tell them they have 2 hours!" is the kind of thing that is instantly recognisable, despite me knowing nothing about actual policework/investigations.

my opinionation (Hamildan), Wednesday, 7 June 2023 14:49 (two years ago)

Not Noonan, Dennis Farina.

was reading the interview upthread and brain just autotyped.

Foster and Hopkins make Silence the clear winner here.
