i got a slip indicating i had a package, an important one that i was expecting and needed to have today, so i showed up at the post office this morning to get it. Waited 20 mins for them to come back and tell me that there was no record of the package in the system.
i had to be somewhere @ one so i went to my appt. and then called the number on the packing slip, where they confirmed that i did in fact have a package.
i paid $15 to get a cab back to my neighborhood where i got to the post office just about 4 minutes before they close - and the guy is locking the door. i protested and the dude is all "the computer systems shut down 5 minutes early, its too late, we're closed" and some other bullshit, i tried to explain the situation, i asked for his supervisors name and he and his coworker kept saying "call the number on the slip" and wouldnt give me a supervisor name or a real reason that they close at three. i told them to fuck themselves
i called the ask usps number and ended up just 'filing a complaint' which im sure is about like a slap on the wrist except without the sting
ugh fuck the incompetent-ass usps

the reason they closed early and then decided to be dicks to you is cuz they work for the usps (on a saturday!) and get pleasure out of screwing ppl like you over so u just gotta let it slide

― deej, Saturday, 21 June 2008 20:41 (seventeen years ago)
maybe if packages in my neighborhood were ever delivered on time i wouldnt already have a built in hatred. this is straw-camels back shit kinda
ya i know maybe i'm taking a "you're letting the terrorists win" stance or something but im pretty sure these bitter usps workers wanted you to go home and wade through the bureaucratic nonsense of calling a number to reprimand them even though we all know nothing is going to come of it
i'd just go in there on monday and get your package and if you can't talk to their supervisor THEN tell them to go fuck themselves

are they entirely supported on postage stamps??
― deej, Saturday, 21 June 2008 21:37 (seventeen years ago)
i find that hard to believe
Ok, a cursory glance says that they are somewhat taxpayer subsidized. I think I picked up that "knowledge" from "Ann Landers" ;_;

You should really be mad at banks for not being open on weekends/convenient times because they make more money than god.
― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Saturday, 21 June 2008 22:16 (seventeen years ago)
All money is the same, whether it comes from an ATM or a human teller or is entirely digital internetized. Letters and packages are not like that.
― Oilyrags, Saturday, 21 June 2008 22:22 (seventeen years ago)
Hint: there are things to do at a bank other than take out $50 so you can drink shitty beer.
― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Saturday, 21 June 2008 22:38 (seventeen years ago)
for $50 I could drink some damn fine beer!

Your situation sounds shitty, but I'm generally very impressed with USPS. The staff at post offices tend to be friendly, efficient and helpful (with exceptions, for sure). The service is generally punctual and reliable, which is impressive considering the very low fees. I'm pretty sure our postage is generally the cheapest in the industrialized world, (correct me if I'm wrong) and that's without large amounts of government subsidization. USPS provides many lower-middle to middle class jobs with good benefits and job security often in areas with few other opportunities.
All of this in an era of decreasing use of postage due to electronic correspondence and fierce competition from Fedex, UPS, DHL and others . My hats off to USPS.

I'm pretty sure Chicago post offices are a special kind of hell. I always have package problems, and when I try to get one, they're amazingly rude. And not the usual customer-service-style-through-clenched-teeth-still-throwing-in-a-'sir- rude, I mean they'll look you straight in the eye, and with no pretense whatsoever, make it clear they do not give a flying fuck about your package or your stupid little life.
It'd be kind of refreshing if it weren't always a textbook I need right away or a phone to replace my broken one or something.

deej don't give up the good fight, fuck usps. They lost some really, really important documents of mine a few years back, like work-visa-application level important, it caused me a lot of hell and i'll never forgive them for it. shit eventually showed up back at my house like a year after i originally sent it. a YEAR. not using them for anything important ever again.
― adamj, Sunday, 22 June 2008 00:43 (seventeen years ago)
by sheer coincidence, my security deposit from my last apt, which i had entirely forgotten about, arrived today. It was postmarked june of 2007

3 major fuck ups in three days, what. the. fuck
USPS are straight cunts and that's the truth. the employees must get routinely beaten or something because every one I have encountered has been pathologically dour and unhelpful. and Fed Ex are fuckin useless too. it's like the only competition between services is to see who dares to be the shittiest.
― Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 03:22 (seventeen years ago)
UPS agents are very jovial however (srsly)
cant speak for DSL or whatever the fuck that other one is
― deeznuts, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 03:24 (seventeen years ago)
lol you have not been around for very long USPS is just fine as a delivery service - at least they're fucking cheap, where UPS and FedEx will gladly fuck you over in the same fashion for three to four times the price also I hope we get some britishes in here to discuss the Royal Mail
― El Tomboto, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 03:34 (seventeen years ago)
+ I've definitely NEVER heard of something like your deposit check issue happening at any of the private shippers, they just lose shit, they definitely don't spend 12 months trying to get it to the right place after it winds up in the dead letter bin for some reason

7-8 years ago, after I moved out of my folks' house, I started getting my mom's mail forwarded to me, even though the forward was an individual (and not household forward). it was likely due to the similarity of our names. they'd fix it, only to screw it up again for several months, so I basically gave up protesting anymore until the forwarding ran out.
This year, my dad lived with me for three months, and his first name and mine are completely different (same last name obv). he submits an automated forward request online (again, individual only) to his new address. for almost a full week, the post office forwards his mail AND MINE to his house. my letters/packages would show up with "Mr. Hammer Smashed Bagels" on them, and the yellow forward tag had his name on it, so it wasn't even a mistake of applying it to the wrong name. Yet my brother, who has the same last name as the two of us, still got his mail. So after I called last month a bit pissed off (cos a lot of packages got lost for weeks due to the time to redirect), the embarrassed employee acknowledged it was a ridiculous error, and that it was due to a 'backup driver' and that it wouldn't happen again.
Today they got mail intended for me again, a month later. I'm thinking of forwarding my mail up their asses at this point.
― Hammer Smashed Bagels, Monday, 26 October 2015 21:21 (ten years ago)
Always a convenient target in better times. Anyway, my natural gas payment was mailed 17 days ago and still hasn't arrived, seems like collateral damage from the USPS sabotage. I created an account for online payment, and will be doing that for other accounts I've been archaically sending physical checks.
