chap, Sunday, 22 June 2008 19:15 (seventeen years ago)

Good timing. Yesterday, i just kept laughing at the scene where he starts talking to a bottle of bourbon in the courtroom.

kingfish, Sunday, 22 June 2008 19:20 (seventeen years ago)

Hutz: Now Mr. Nahasapeemapetilon, if that is your real name, have you ever forgotten anything?
Apu: No. In fact I can recite pi to 40,000 places. And the last digit is 1.
Hutz: Well if you never forget anything, tell me this: what color tie am I wearing?
Apu: You are wearing a red and white club tie in a half-windsor knot.
Hutz: Oh, I am, am I? Is that what you think? Well if that's what you think, I have something to tell you. Something which may shock and discredit you. And that thing is as follows: I'm not wearing a tie at all.
Apu: If I am wrong about that, maybe I am wrong about Mrs. Simpson.
Hutz: No further questions.

McClure, because he narrated "Meat & You: Partners in Freedom"

J0hn D., Sunday, 22 June 2008 21:48 (seventeen years ago)

Hutz by a hair. I think he's my favourite character on the show, actually.

Troy ftw. Most versatile media personality ever!

lionel hutz vs troy mcclure vs the unfulfilled promise of Phil Hartman voicing Zap Brannigan

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Sunday, 22 June 2008 21:59 (seventeen years ago)

Both great, but it's easily McClure for me. Hutz is kinda one-note like Gil Gunderson, but McClure had some great recurring gags w/ endless variations and carried one of my all-time favorite episodes, "A Fish Called Selma."

some dude, Monday, 23 June 2008 16:06 (seventeen years ago)

I can't choose.

"Works on contingency? No, money down!"

Abbott, Monday, 23 June 2008 16:18 (seventeen years ago)

Tough choice, but Hutz by a hair for me. I think what pushes him over the top for me is the episode where Marge starts selling real estate. "Marge, there's 'the truth,' [smiles, nods] and 'the truth' [frowns, shakes head]."

I also have a soft spot for Hartman one-shot character Evan Conover US Department of State Undersecretary for International Protocol: Brat and Punk Division.

Pancakes Hackman, Monday, 23 June 2008 16:18 (seventeen years ago)

Hutz: Uh-oh! We’ve drawn Judge Snyder!
Marge: Is that bad?
Hutz: Well he’s kinda had it in for me ever since I accidentally ran over his dog.
Marge: You did?
Hutz: Well, actually, replace the word ‘accidentally’ with ‘repeatedly’ and the word ‘dog’ with ’son’.

hutz. not even close.

Granny Dainger, Thursday, 26 June 2008 19:37 (seventeen years ago)

I love the lining around Troy McClure's eyes, not sure if he's supposed to be cringing/wincing all the time or it's just a signifier of his age but it really adds so much to the character in combination w/ the gregarious voice.

some dude, Thursday, 26 June 2008 19:41 (seventeen years ago)

"Works on contingency? No, money down!"

haha. That joke must've taken so long to think up.

I think I have to go for Hutz. Something about his absolute confidence in every moronic utterance appeals to me like little else.

Merdeyeux, Thursday, 26 June 2008 21:09 (seventeen years ago)

the talking-to-the-whiskey-in-the-courtroom thing almost puts me in the Hutz column, but it seems in general they used Troy McClure more and thus he has more classic moments ("Gladys, the Groovy Mule!")

Oilyrags, Saturday, 28 June 2008 23:23 (seventeen years ago)

While I appreciate...all too well...the Hutz sleazy lawyer jokes, McClure is just the best:

"You may remember me from movies like Smoke Yourself Thin and Get Some Confidence, Stupid!"

burt_stanton, Sunday, 29 June 2008 01:50 (seventeen years ago)

Man Ive looked at this thread for days and I keep changing my mind. "A Fish Called Selma" really wins it on the McClure side for me, he becomes so utterly pathetic in that episode. You can see where Groening then took that with some of the early Zapp Branigan episodes too ("but I just get SO LONELY! *sob sob*")

Also every "you may remember me from such etc etc" bit.

Hutz is awesome in his desperate shysterism though. I mean Miguel Sanchez... argh I cant decide at all.

Trayce, Sunday, 29 June 2008 03:10 (seventeen years ago)

Hutz!

"Oh, sure, like lawyers work in big skyscrapers and have secretaries. Look at him! He's wearing a belt. That's Hollywood for ya."

On the other hand, this result can also be read as "does ILX miss Phil Hartman? Yes: 61 - No: 0" which is totally OTM again.

three months pass...

[Homer and Marge visit Lionel Hutz's office.]
Marge: So, do you think we have a case?
Hutz: Mrs. Simpson, you're in luck! Your sexual harassment suit is just the thing I need to rebuild my shattered practice! (He pulls out a liquor bottle from his desk) Care to join me in a belt of scotch?
Marge: It's nine-thirty in the morning!
Hutz: Yeah, but I haven't slept in days! (He takes a swig) Last chance! (He finishes it off) Oh, yeah...

Hutz: Well, you good folks can rest easy now because you've come to the very best in legal representation.
Skinner: Uh, excuse me, is there an Orange Julius stand on this floor?
Hutz: I'll sell you this one, it's almost full.
Skinner: Well, why don't I just drink out of a toilet bowl.
Hutz: He'll be back.

Get the Flaps Out (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 12 March 2010 22:16 (sixteen years ago)

Judge: Mr. Hutz, do you know you're not wearing any pants?
Lionel Hutz: What? AAH! I move for a bad court thingy.
Judge: You mean a mistrial?
Lionel Hutz: Yeah... that's why you're the judge, and I'm the law... talkin'... guy.

What makes this one is he's not even wearing underwear, and then David Crosby shaking his head.

Roomful of Moogs (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 12 March 2010 22:22 (sixteen years ago)

Mr. Simpson, don't you worry. I watched Matlock in a bar last night. The sound wasn't on, but I think I got the gist of it.

Get the Flaps Out (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 12 March 2010 22:27 (sixteen years ago)

Lionel Hutz: Hiring me as your attorney, you'll also recieve this free smoking monkey.
[places a toy monkey with a cigarette in it's mouth on the desk]
Marge: Mr Hutz.
Lionel Hutz: Look... he's taking another puff!

and then he dumps the thing in a desk drawer full of smoking monkeys.

Roomful of Moogs (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 12 March 2010 22:29 (sixteen years ago)

"Pipe down in there, Hutz!"
