if two people want to live together before getting married, they can. It's cool. It's the 90s.
Anyone else remember this phrase? It was used as an answer to anything that was apparently "old fashioned" and fuddy duddy. It's strange to think of it ever having existed during ye olde Bush daze... and the fact that it was a long time ago.
I wonder how things would be different if we had the phrase today. "hey, it's the 2000s, if guys want to wear girl's jeans and giant plastic lensed glasses, it's cool. it's the 2000s."

Is this an "in Soviet Russia" gag?
― Noodle Vague, Monday, 23 June 2008 16:26 (seventeen years ago)
This phrase dates back to at least the 1920s. Today we usually say '21st century' instead of the decade.
― Oilyrags, Monday, 23 June 2008 16:26 (seventeen years ago)
I think everyone was just happy the 80s were over and trying to put as much clear blue water between themselves and that decade as possible. There's a lot less optimism around these days as well, that may well be a big factor.
But yes, we do say 'its the 21st Century' but it sort of lacks the smugness of 'It's the 90s'.

I totally remember it being something smug. Like we were punk kids and the teacher would say something old fashioned and we'd be like, "huh huh get with the times, it's the 90s!" It seems so friggin strange now in our shutdown, paranoid, backwards looking society.
This is also inspired by watching Married with Children right now. Thanks unemployment checks.
― burt_stanton, Monday, 23 June 2008 16:34 (seventeen years ago)
we still say "it's the 90s" for lack of a better way to say it.

Let me tell you something, this is the 1990's, alright? In this day and age a man has to have choices, a man has to have a little bit of variety.

And why do plotlines of 70s era movies start to spiral out of control on 12/31/79? (Boogie Nights, 54, etc.)

Imagine all the excitement that went into imagining the new millennium ... and then realize how it's turned out so far.

There's a bit in Karate Kid where Daniel lets his girl drive, saying, 'hey, it's the 80s!'. This used to amuse me no end in the 90s.

Female bystander: "How about trying abstinence?"
Green: "Abstinence? Do you wear that? Is that like a jockey strap?"

Heavens, Pleasant Plains, I can't believe someone (who is not me) has actually made a reference to THE ESCAPE CLUB.
I bought that 7" in 1988.
It was the 80s.
