I'm not a wet ceiling tile, but racists are disgusting.

I think omar was just trying to make a sarcastic point.

three months pass...

Reading this thread makes me realize I am not an American. I'm not sure when this happened, but I suspect it was during the Reagan administration.

Somewhere else we're discussing this, I'm sure, but I'm too tired to dig around.

Here's the deal on this woman, which comes from a source I trust. She is not racist - rather, she is certifiable, in a very literal sense. As in mumbling-profanities-in-church schizophrenic. When she doesn't take her medication, she gets like this. Her condition is well-known to the local police. She doesn't need Internet-borne revenge meted out against her - she needs medical help.

two years pass...

The largest fan group of Russian champions Zenit St Petersburg has demanded the club refrain from buying black and gay players.

"We're not racists but we see the absence of black players at Zenit as an important tradition," Zenit fan club Landscrona said in a letter, called the "Selection 12 manifesto", posted on its website on Monday.

"It would allow Zenit to maintain the national identity of the club, which is the symbol of St Petersburg."

Albert Crampus (NickB), Monday, 17 December 2012 15:45 (thirteen years ago)

Appears to be based on the idea that they are the most northerly of major European clubs and therefore a very long way from Africa and South America.

Presumably they've just been confused about Bruno Alves for the last three years.

Go Narine, Go! (ShariVari), Monday, 17 December 2012 15:45 (thirteen years ago)

no they want an all slavic, scandinavian or baltic team

reframing racial exclusion as positive communitarian identity is quite the thing in white nationalism these days

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Monday, 17 December 2012 15:46 (thirteen years ago)

Thread needs Andrey Arshavin photoshopped into an impecccably multicultural scene

it's practically only a form of protectionism, this is p much the river cottage fc approach, and surely you're not saying hugh fuckley wittington is a racist who wants the poor to die of slow natural local starvation???

first u get the flower, then u get the honey, then u get the stamen (darraghmac), Monday, 17 December 2012 15:48 (thirteen years ago)

xxxp Yeah, they're framing it as a Baltic version of Athletic Bilbao (based on a northern-European regional identity), ignoring the fact that Bilbao have a black dude playing for them too now.

Go Narine, Go! (ShariVari), Monday, 17 December 2012 15:49 (thirteen years ago)

Love to be the boss of Zenit, get a few Jewish players in

I've always wondered what attitudes in Russia were really like. My mom used to go on and on about how in USSR they were all geniuses and didn't have racist shit in the schools unlike in US. But maybe that was brainwashing.

But also in Russia hasn't there been racism against different regional / ethnic types?

not at all! It's just that if they stayed where they were it'd be better for the environment and they could probably develop wonderful local cuisine

first u get the flower, then u get the honey, then u get the stamen (darraghmac), Monday, 17 December 2012 15:56 (thirteen years ago)

xp It's complicated. There's racism directed at "external" minorities (Africans, Chinese, etc) and racism directed at "internal" minorities like Tatars and Chechens. Neither ever went away but the ideology of Communism did, in theory at least, lead to some kind of extension of the idea of universal brotherhood. In practice there was still a lot of prejudice, anti-semitism, etc but less than before.

By most accounts things got much worse from the early 90s onwards. The far-right in Russia was fairly effective in convincing a section of the population that minorities, from Jewish oligarchs to Tajik workers, were responsible for the grinding poverty and deprivation many "ethnic Slavs" faced.

Russia is still pretty racist in a lot of respects but probably not as much as people assume.

Go Narine, Go! (ShariVari), Monday, 17 December 2012 15:58 (thirteen years ago)

That's a good synopsis, I always wondered, as I am slowly learning Russian because I'd like to visit in a few years! Thanks.
