is it worth having a nectar card?

always avoided having one because of "ooh no scarey corporation knowing how many tins of beans i buy!", but i'm starting to think about selling out and getting - especially as i shop at sainsbos quite a bit (out of necessity rather than choice)

They know what you buy anyway unless you only ever pay cash, but Yes, it is worth having one - every few months we use our points to stock up on booze.

it's worth it for the off-chance you might get stuck behind someone buying £250 worth of groceries who forgets her card and lets you use yours for the purchase instead.

I have no idea what the translation is for £250 >>> nectar points >>> real money is. I'm probably getting ahead of myself by thinking I can afford a steak or something

my friend got sent a free camera from nectar and they said if he installs it in his bedroom and plug it into his phoneline they'll give him some free airmiles.

there should only be one 'is' in the second sentence, obv

I've gotten a new kettle and toaster at Argos out of ours, but I do shop in Sainsburys all the time. Also now you get points for re-using bags - so bring along 10 bags each time and put one item in each and you should get 10 points.

I've never cashed my point in yet, so I have several thousand amassed over the years, despite being a hardcore Tesco devotee and so only very rarely shopping at Sainsburglars.

sixteen years pass...

you have to save the offers before using them, the Sainsbury's ones specifically, which seems a bit odd. and yesterday I'd forgotten to do it and tried to do it in the store but those places are notorious for lack of wifi so I'm not sure i got my 5p off soup.

they also seen very keen at offering me deals on a month's worth of the same stuff i bought last week. another 24 weetabix? more toilet roll? more kitchen sponges? don't need them

Sainsbury's have a lot of offers that only apply if you use a Nectar card at the point of purchase and I suppose that's financially the bigger reason to do so.

Seems a bit shoddy in the sense that I assume the people who most need the offers possibly don't have store cards.

Koogs - it seems to be a thing to reward buying what you usually buy and, certainly, in the olden days you'd have been rewarded for buying something new.

Yeah they've copied Tesco with the card discounts, rarely get a coupon now and never need the app. My local Sainsbury's also now have a thing where you can't leave the self service until you scan the bar code on your receipt.

i guess it makes them look generous and doesn't cost them much giving you unusable offers like that.

i don't see many offer prices in Sainsbury's, maybe I'm just buying the wrong things. Tesco seems better but is less convenient. I've moaned before about the big clubcard prices and the much smaller, fainter normal prices on the shelf stickers

Sainsbury’s weekly offers are frustrating as they expect that you’ll get the same stuff every week. Had a friend visit who cannot eat gluten so got some gluten free cookies, predictably we get offers for gluten free stuff every week now.

Lidl app is the one to go for, easily spend £50 in a month there and get a nice loaf for doing so. Currently got an offer where you get a free bakery item with every shop. They’ve started doing som deals where you’ll get a discount for using the app similar to other supermarkets.

I know they’re just doing it to harvest my data but if I get a chocolate hazelnut doughnut for doing so not going to complain.

I did genuinely "win my shop" once with an M&S Sparks card. Sadly, it was a day when I'd bought one thing - a carton of fruit juice - and not a bucket full of wine.

one month passes...

i find it's also very good at latching onto those things you buy because your first choice isn't available and giving you offers on those things forever after. iceberg lettuce, nobody's first choice...

one month passes...

they've sent me vouchers for extra nectar points through the post, like paper vouchers that i have to scan. how is that better than what they do every single week, just sending me offers through the app?

that said, free biscuits (but i won't be buying the black forest bourbons again. gak)
