for a cheap thriller not aiming to do anything but make money off of 14-16 year olds this was really good. it was to the point, the villains were very plausible, there were only a few points of shit like "lol y r u leavin her alone" and the ending wasn't some dumb triumphant thing where the dude axes the villains or something (see: disturbia). definitely recommended as mindless fun that turns out to be less mindless than you'd think.

man here i am on my toes for spoilers for this movie when i clicked on this, i didn't think to watch out for Disturbia spoilers! wtf man.

i thought it started well (actually the first 30 mins are a total indie drama--they mope around and listen to joanna newsom... ON VINYL) but the scares sorta plateau-ed.

Thought this was fantastic...ending was great
― Tape Store, Thursday, 26 June 2008 17:36 (seventeen years ago)
i actually kind of liked the ending!
also: do you guys think they knew the killers? when they took their masks off the couple looked especially horrified but i guess it could've just been overacting

I know the dude who plays the Man in the Mask - Kip Weeks. Really nice guy. He and his wife have an eco-friendly kids toy company.

lol at you whining about DISTURBIA SPOILERS!! hey guess what
***SPOILER ALERT*** * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * at the end of "you don't mess with the zohan", zohan opens his own hair salon with his new wife

hahaha
― s1ocki, Thursday, 26 June 2008 18:28 (seventeen years ago)
no, i don't think they knew the killers. that girl at the front door was one of them, right? they didn't know her. also, the "because you were home" line seemed to imply that they were picked sorta randomly...manson-inspired, i assumed
i viewed the ending the same as the AV Club: "Funny Games without the scolding"
― Tape Store, Thursday, 26 June 2008 18:34 (seventeen years ago)
yeah those are the two things that persuaded me to think it was just random-- although maybe they knew the male ringleader or something. it's a strength of this movie that these things are even up for question though.
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 26 June 2008 18:51 (seventeen years ago)
yeah don't think they knew them

pretty sure horror at unmasking point = universal trope that when the masks come off at crime scene, u pretty much fucked.
this was ok. sound design was THE SHIT, everything else was pretty much standard but not crap.

oh yeah also some serious logical problems towards the end which i wont go into in fear of spoilering it for the 3 other people that will ever get around to reading this thread and watching the movie.

hmmm just watched "them" (french movie so maybe should also be referred to by original title "ils"). working the same ground here, although some pretty spectacular divergent aspects towards the last 30 minutes.
i think the strangers was better? def some influence going on here.

i thought the strangers was knobrot myself, but then i did watch it on my laptop with shitty speakers, so maybe the frights fell a bit dead. did wonder what the point was of demasking the villains and then not showing who they were.
