I'm all for that

Tom D., Thursday, 26 June 2008 12:30 (seventeen years ago)

... and other underappreciated, slightly gawky sportsmen who were actually rather good deep down

94 goals from 100 games in his first run at rosenborg

I'm not against this but any particular reason why now?

Ned Trifle II, Thursday, 26 June 2008 12:31 (seventeen years ago)

He stopped the Disease winning 10-in-a-row so that makes him one of the greatest sporting heroes of all time, AFAIC

32 goals in 75 european cup games is a great record

Anyway, Harald was appreciated everywhere but in the Scottish press, who are renowned for their even-handed approach to Celtic and Rangers

Harald was a nice chap but his repeated comedy misses did get to me - up until he only went and won us the league of course :)

He scored a goal every two games for us which isn't bad but when you compare it with Henrik Larsson's or even Mark Burchill's records it doesn't look great. He was always better suited to playing for a counter-attacking team with pace than he was facing big SPL cloggers camped in their own penalty area for 90 minutes.

He was first to demonstrate that Bobo Balde + Europe disnae work - it's a pity MO'N didn't pay attention.

We were once beating Hearts 3-0 (Henrik Larsson hat trick) and Harald missed a sitter that brought a huge cheer from the posh seats in the main stand. turned out a bunch of the hospitality guys had a pile of money on the correct score.

I seem to remember that he was played out of position a lot for Celtic, as a sort of winger?

Tom D., Thursday, 26 June 2008 12:45 (seventeen years ago)

Aye now and then they'd try to make him a sort of inside-forward because he was getting no joy as a penalty box striker. Sort of what I expected them to do with Derek Riordan, though it seemed not playing him at all was the preferred option.

Mark Burchill's just signed for Rotherham. He's only 27...

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 26 June 2008 12:47 (seventeen years ago)

didn't he scored a belter against kilmarnock, from just outside the box, into the non-jock stein end goals?

czn, Thursday, 26 June 2008 12:48 (seventeen years ago)

haha just watched "smell the glove - final day" on youtube... brings back memories

my first ever season ticket was in the temporary stand on the west side at parkhead, remember that?

czn, Thursday, 26 June 2008 12:49 (seventeen years ago)

He scored four in that game. I remember thinking he should have had 10 :)

xpost re Kilmarnock

Soccerbase says that's his 11th club! I had really high hopes for him when he was at Celtic. He averaged a goal a game for us but could never get a long enough run in the team to establish himself. Scorer of the fastest ever hat trick in European competition (vs Jeunesse Esch in the UEFA Cup) at just over 3 minutes.

Yes, shame, funny how that happens when a player leaves a big club and they're never really as good again

It was nice to see him doing it again in Phil O'Donnell's tribute game last month :-)
