How It's Made

like many a dork out there, i love the show. love the crazy machinery. the hand-tooled shit. all that. love that in every episode he has to say "extruder" at least five times.

coupla things...

last night i watched one on maple syrup. so, after they go through all the process they barrel it up. they test each batch. the high quality stuff gets rated and bottled. the low quality stuff goes for "industrial use." what the hell is an industrial use for maple syrop?! he clammed up about that.

also, when they show how locks or pens or potato chips and things are made, what in the world are these brands? i've never seen most of these brands on any shelf anywhere!

how it's made nerds, unite.

I wish they would show this in bars instead of sportscenter

I was kind of expecting the "How They Make Cheetos" episode to ruin my appetite forever, but you know, after it was over, I was kinda hungry for Cheetos.

v disappointed this is not called "WAHT IS MADE"

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 26 June 2008 16:58 (seventeen years ago)

I think an "industrial use" in the case of maple syrup means the food industry- flavoring mainly.

brownie, Thursday, 26 June 2008 16:59 (seventeen years ago)

xp Re: industrial uses for maple syrup. I'm thinking this would be for those "food products" which prominently advertise "Made with real maple syrup!", by which they mean that a small dose of low grade maple syrup has been introduced into the batch, along with the usual shitload of high fructose corn syrup.

they were showing how they made highlighter pens. not any brand you've heard of, of course. they were these 3-in-1 mini pens that were more like schwag you'd pick up out of a bowl at some business's booth at a job fair or something. but they had a specialized machine that used an electromagnet to pick up colorful metal flakes and drop them into the clear pen casing for decoration. why!? did veruca salt demand that daddy's highlighter factory put glitter in the pieces of crap?

andrew m., Thursday, 26 June 2008 17:04 (seventeen years ago)

max otm, btw

andrew m., Thursday, 26 June 2008 17:05 (seventeen years ago)

(xpost) American highlighters sound completely different and gaudily exciting compared to the ones we get in Europe. Here our highlighters are short and stubby and made in Germany. With no excitement whatsoever.

Try searching on G00gle Vide0 for "The Secret Life Of", a series of UK TV programmes about video recorders, engines, etc..

I didn't intend that to sound mean btw

El Tomboto, Thursday, 26 June 2008 18:41 (seventeen years ago)

(xxpost) I love the video recorder episode, they make audio tape out of sticky tape and rust, and then test it ("THIS IS RECORDED ON STICKY TAPE AND RUST! THIS IS RECORDED ON STICKY TAPE AND RUST!"), they demonstrate how the video signal deteriorates with multiple copies, visit the Science Museum warehouse to look at old tape machines...

snoball, Thursday, 26 June 2008 18:41 (seventeen years ago)

You should also be jealous of his record collection, his friends' dogs, and the fact that I've made him mac'n'cheese from scratch.

Laurel, Thursday, 26 June 2008 18:42 (seventeen years ago)

PS: I fucking love this show.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 26 June 2008 19:25 (seventeen years ago)

this guy's voice and delivery are pretty classic. i half expect him to bust into "and then the man's semen enters the woman's...", he's got such a educational filmstrip quality to him.

PappaWheelie V, Thursday, 26 June 2008 19:58 (seventeen years ago)

three years pass...

wasn't sure whether to revive the longer thread or the earlier thread so I picked the longer thread

just saw haggis on "How It's Made". Got to see a frozen block of sheep's lungs chopped into chunks and what probably a hundred pounds of simmering beef fat looks like.

Factory was meticulously clean-looking though.
