This sounds like a Lifetime movie, not something that actually happened.

Defense attorney Jeffrey Hoffman said that 175 letters were submitted to the court detailing Sabhnani's charitable acts around the world. He called her "a woman who spent a lifetime doing good deeds."

Hoffman said that around 2004 or 2005, Sabhnani's weight plummeted from 325 pounds to 135. "She did it by starving herself," and that resulted in a chemical imbalance and significant malnourishment. "She had become a very different person."

"I think it's very harsh," Hoffman said after the sentencing. "She has suffered dramatically."

"This did not happen in the 1800s," Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Lesko said during the trial. "This happened in the 21st century. This happened in Muttontown, New York."

They put someone to death in 1862 for slave-trading by calling it piracy. I suppose they couldn't get away with that here because a) this woman wasn't trying to sell her maids; and b) this is 2008.

HI DERE, Friday, 27 June 2008 01:35 (seventeen years ago)

I love her defense: "they made this up to get a more lucrative deal".

I think anything would be more lucrative than NOTHING AND STARVATION.

Trayce, Friday, 27 June 2008 01:36 (seventeen years ago)

She didn't give them nothing; they regularly got beatings.

dan this occurs more often than you might think, generally w/ undocumented workers and some employer that thinks that maybe ok they're technically skirting some labor laws but they're not doing anything wrong, in fact they're doing these ppl a favor cuz hey they get to come to america, a roof over their head and a 'job'. it's usually remarkably close to the 'slave whippings/lynchings almost never occurred' and 'the silver lining of slavery' revisionism i'd hear occasionally growing up. i think some of the legislation w/ this is actually fairly new and/or the enforcement focus amped up in recent years (i remember it used to be the only i'd read about 'slavery in america' it always involved prostitution and organized crime but now more and more it's just common laborers and run of the mill rich ppl.

xpost lol speak of the devil

The defense, which intends to appeal, contended the two women concocted the story as a way of escaping the house for more lucrative opportunities. I'm shocked she actually did jail time. She must not have been rich/important enough to avoid it.

What's the point of being a millionaire if you can't make people eat chillies 'til they vom and then eat the vom?

S-, Friday, 27 June 2008 03:42 (seventeen years ago)

I shouldn't laugh at that but I totally just did.
