this is basically what prompted this poll. i guess political figures are way too homogenized nowadays for anything like this to happen anymore. or no one will ever be as notoriously evil on a world stage as hitler.

there have been plenty of people as evil as Hitler I think - certainly many would put Stalin up there, Pol Pot for sure (1/4 of Cambodia's population murdered or starved within a four-year span). I guess "world stage" = "other nations get involved" but history's a long sequence of Hitlers and would-be Hitlers

Hitler's like the Thriller of dictators. There'll be other people making a splash here and there, but you're probably never gonna have any one person make as big an impact on the whole world again, at least not anytime soon.

a fairly related question : lately I've wondered if the name adolf is still used nowadays. like, here, in France, the administration can decide whether a name is good or not good for a newborn (friends of mine wanted to call their son "superman" for a second name and it was refused).
