would people be in rocking the hitler-style mustache in 2008 if it didn't carry the connotations it does now?

would the hipster revival of it have happened already?

J0rdan S., Monday, 30 June 2008 03:50 (seventeen years ago)

this fucking guy

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 30 June 2008 03:51 (seventeen years ago)

hitler ruined the charlie chaplin mustache

LaMonte, Monday, 30 June 2008 03:52 (seventeen years ago)

i mean it's an aggressively ugly style of facial hair, but i don't think that would've stopped people

J0rdan S., Monday, 30 June 2008 03:53 (seventeen years ago)

nah my theory
like
ok
sargnt88: i mean it's aggressively ugly
me: hitler has a handlebar instead
so handlebar becomes verboten
sargnt88: right
me: and hitler stache becomes a gay signifier
and the biker in the village people has a hitler stache
and then yeah hipsters start rocking it circa 2005
sargnt88: haha could you imagine

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 30 June 2008 03:55 (seventeen years ago)

it's interesting, because I don't think there's any other simple fashion choice that was ever permanently taken out of circulation by its association with a hated figure

J0hn D., Monday, 30 June 2008 03:56 (seventeen years ago)

also what is with the recent trend in c&p'ing chatlogs

J0hn D., Monday, 30 June 2008 03:57 (seventeen years ago)

that's not a recent thing, ethan and jess used to do that back in the ye olde ilx days

electricsound, Monday, 30 June 2008 03:58 (seventeen years ago)

its just like why repeat myself

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 30 June 2008 03:59 (seventeen years ago)

esoj you are correct sir!

this is basically what prompted this poll. i guess political figures are way too homogenized nowadays for anything like this to happen anymore. or no one will ever be as notoriously evil on a world stage as hitler.

J0rdan S., Monday, 30 June 2008 04:02 (seventeen years ago)

also cuz im watching a movie where this guy is the main character

Sundar, Monday, 30 June 2008 04:08 (seventeen years ago)

well it seems like it was mostly a non-western thing

J0rdan S., Monday, 30 June 2008 04:10 (seventeen years ago)

or no one will ever be as notoriously evil on a world stage as hitler.

there have been plenty of people as evil as Hitler I think - certainly many would put Stalin up there, Pol Pot for sure (1/4 of Cambodia's population murdered or starved within a four-year span). I guess "world stage" = "other nations get involved" but history's a long sequence of Hitlers and would-be Hitlers

J0hn D., Monday, 30 June 2008 04:12 (seventeen years ago)

yeah that's true
i guess sadaam could conceivably be lionized in future american textbooks like hitler (or has for all i know) was but he doesn't have a stylistic tic like that

Hitler's like the Thriller of dictators. There'll be other people making a splash here and there, but you're probably never gonna have any one person make as big an impact on the whole world again, at least not anytime soon.

some dude, Monday, 30 June 2008 04:23 (seventeen years ago)

i mean in the history of the world, there really isn't any stylistic tic more inextricably associated with one person than hitler and the mustache right? maybe jesus + crown of thorns?

J0rdan S., Monday, 30 June 2008 04:25 (seventeen years ago)

was the crown of thorns previously a popular fashion statement?

some dude, Monday, 30 June 2008 04:33 (seventeen years ago)

I am pretty famous for my awesome shoes, I think that whole deal is trending upwards for me

J0hn D., Monday, 30 June 2008 04:41 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah a crown of thorns is hardly a "stylistic tic".

Trayce, Monday, 30 June 2008 04:41 (seventeen years ago)

yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah you know what i mean

J0rdan S., Monday, 30 June 2008 04:44 (seventeen years ago)

if only hitler had copy/pasted his aimchats with goebbels and made it verboten

am0n, Monday, 30 June 2008 04:45 (seventeen years ago)

I was thinking about exactly this question just a couple of weeks ago, after seeing Sparks in concert. I wonder what the reaction was at the time to Ron Mael's sporting of it?

a fairly related question : lately I've wondered if the name adolf is still used nowadays. like, here, in France, the administration can decide whether a name is good or not good for a newborn (friends of mine wanted to call their son "superman" for a second name and it was refused). I was wondering if you named your kid "adolf benito" for instance if it would be possible !

There are lots of Nigerian Adolfs.

ogmor, Friday, 4 July 2008 11:37 (seventeen years ago)

my grandfather used to sport a half-arsed moustache like that.

The Sparks even have a song about the reaction to that moustache (as well as other types of moustache), it's called "Moustache".

Tuomas, Friday, 4 July 2008 12:34 (seventeen years ago)

Surely everyone gives them selves a Hitler 'stach for a bit when they shave?

I love the way the hitler kettle is doing the fey, comic version of the seig heil -- is it a Mel Brooks movie I'm being reminded of?

i don't even have an internet (Hurting 2), Thursday, 30 May 2013 14:18 (twelve years ago)

Also it looks like hitler reimagined as a fastidious little house servant.

i don't even have an internet (Hurting 2), Thursday, 30 May 2013 15:03 (twelve years ago)

What is that black I-shaped thing on the side of the kettle? Some sort of handle or something?

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Thursday, 30 May 2013 15:13 (twelve years ago)

just a reflection? (same sort of line runs up the spout.)

sleepingsignal, Thursday, 30 May 2013 15:15 (twelve years ago)

Possible I suppose? What ever it is, it spoils both the look of the kettle and its resemblance to der Fuhrer.

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Thursday, 30 May 2013 15:21 (twelve years ago)

Therefore it displeases me.

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Thursday, 30 May 2013 15:22 (twelve years ago)

for you kettle the pour is over

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 30 May 2013 15:23 (twelve years ago)

I thought it resembled a necktie, which only made the whole thing work better. Granted it looks a little don draperish and I don't remember ever seeing Hitler with an open suit jacket.

i don't even have an internet (Hurting 2), Thursday, 30 May 2013 15:24 (twelve years ago)

Richard herring sported a Hitler tache for a whole year & did a stand-up show about it, it was p funny

A friend of mine also affected a toothbrush for a while but he was careful to make clear that it was a sparks thing not a Hitler thing
