World Youth Day

Post-APEC, Sydney is bracing for another massive event: World Youth Day, July 15-20 (I make that a week, not a day). This is essentially a celebration of catholicism and is attended by the Pope. Among the controversies surrounding this event are the fact that the State and Commonwealth governments have contributed about $139 million to the event, and that the State government has passed some quick laws outside the parliamentary process making it an offence to 'cause annoyance' to those participating in the event, that offence attracting a maximum fine of $5,500 (note: exposing yourself attracts a fine of $1,200). Such offences might include handing out condoms, wearing a Cradle of Filth t-shirt... no-one really knows. Just as they did at APEC, The Chaser has indicated they'll be planning some kind of stunt to embarrass the organisers. More here:

Hundreds of homeless people could go hungry during World Youth Day because organisers have banned charities from running food services in parts of Sydney.

Volunteers running mobile food vans in the CBD at Martin Place and near St Mary's cathedral usually serve up to 400 free meals every night for the city's homeless.

But St Vincent de Paul and the Just Enough Faith charity have been told to re-locate their operations during the five-day Catholic festival.

What you're saying, Kiwi, if I understand your implied position, is that if you oppose one religious nutter, you must be the opposite kind of religious nutter. Is atheism really that invisible a position?

I want to organise a lesbian schoolgirl flash-mob for this but it's probably too short notice.

Those chaps in the pink hats who met him at the airport will fit into Sydney real well.

If faith/Catholicism is so cool, why do they have to hide it under the innocuous name of "World Youth Day," hmm? Very disingenuous.

Good to see the media hammering Pell on a daily basis. Sad to see nothing much regarding the Church's antiquated views on homosexuality.
