people who always stand, blocking the stairs, and making the bus look full so that it does not stop to let on more passengers even though there is plenty of room up top = cockfarmers.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Thursday, 3 July 2008 13:57 (sixteen years ago) link

well the driver should know how full it is upstairs what with his cameras and mirrors. But yeah when you get on and there's loads of standers and you think "am i being stupid for looking upstairs when everyone's standing or are they being stupid for standing when there's space upstairs" - it's invariable the latter.

ledge, Thursday, 3 July 2008 14:03 (sixteen years ago) link

Right hand side upper deck (heater is on the left and never off even in summer). Further back is cooler in summmer but I love the top deck front above the driver.

Ed, Thursday, 3 July 2008 14:04 (sixteen years ago) link

don't mind people who stand on the lower deck but you shouldn't stand ON the stairs unless you plan to move up when someone comes down. and by the same token if there are people standing on the stairs you shouldn't push past them, especially when they actually SAY there are no spaces upstairs.

xp

lex pretend, Thursday, 3 July 2008 14:06 (sixteen years ago) link

the heater has definitely been off on every bus i've travelled on this summer. i like sitting on the right b/c i sit with my foot on the heater, or at the front, but don't really mind.

lex pretend, Thursday, 3 July 2008 14:07 (sixteen years ago) link

Top deck front every time. You can pretend you're driving!

chap, Thursday, 3 July 2008 14:07 (sixteen years ago) link

there are never no spaces upstairs. will never never not want to sit at the front of the top deck.

Upt0eleven, Thursday, 3 July 2008 14:08 (sixteen years ago) link

In my fascist dictatorship, people who stand blocking the stairs when there are seats will be first against the wall.

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 3 July 2008 14:09 (sixteen years ago) link

the heater is always on! left side sucks! it's too hot even in the winter!

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 3 July 2008 14:11 (sixteen years ago) link

Upper deck, right at the front

^^^pimp seats

The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Thursday, 3 July 2008 14:12 (sixteen years ago) link

top deck front, whichever side the sun isn't

nari, Thursday, 3 July 2008 14:14 (sixteen years ago) link

They don't have a second decker on the busses in Canada but I always try to sit in, by order of priority...

1) the single seats on the left side of the bus
2) the double seat right behind or in front of the back door
3) any forward-facing seat
4) any other seat
5) ugh how am i going to play DS standing

Will M., Thursday, 3 July 2008 14:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Top deck, front or
Top deck, left, middle. I have never been too hot on a bus in London.

marianna lcl, Thursday, 3 July 2008 14:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Upper deck middle, but will sit back or front if necessary. Fuck a lower deck.

Neil S, Thursday, 3 July 2008 14:19 (sixteen years ago) link

It seems (to pre-empt the results) that top-front are very much the seats of choice, whether one is pretending to be a driver or a "pimp". The fashion when I was a youth was to head right to the back, is that where the schoolkids still go? I don't tend to ride buses during the school run.

ledge, Thursday, 3 July 2008 14:20 (sixteen years ago) link

the real pimp seats are the lower deck seats near the back that are in the first row that's higher than the others

ultimate seats were the cushioned seats facing the aisle, next to the back door of the old routemasters - luxurious

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 3 July 2008 14:21 (sixteen years ago) link

You tend to get kids at the top back in the morning around where I live.

Neil S, Thursday, 3 July 2008 14:21 (sixteen years ago) link

Top deck, front or lower deck, back left.

Either that or right above the wheel.

Matt DC, Thursday, 3 July 2008 14:25 (sixteen years ago) link

i've noticed heaters are off more - seems they finally worked it out.

blueski, Thursday, 3 July 2008 14:27 (sixteen years ago) link

the heater is always on! left side sucks! it's too hot even in the winter!

i am really really sensitive to heat (trademark clarion call in office: "can we turn the air con on pleeeease") and have never ever noticed this!

above the wheel = too noisy, interferes with bass from headphones

yup the kidz still sit at the back, continue to be awesome

lex pretend, Thursday, 3 July 2008 14:27 (sixteen years ago) link

I've not got a double-decker for years, but I used to get one all the time at university. Top deck, right at the front. I loved the fucked-upness of the angles as you went around corners, and seeing the edges where trees had grown around the bus route / been snapped.

Scik Mouthy, Thursday, 3 July 2008 14:30 (sixteen years ago) link

the other day guy at the back of the bus was listening to old Eminem. this seemed extra lame somehow.

I have never been too hot on a bus in London.

this is astonishing. you do wear dresses tho.

blueski, Thursday, 3 July 2008 14:30 (sixteen years ago) link

actually that's wrong, i'm too hot all the time on buses in london, but never because of the heaters, just because of the...heat, and sun, and disgusting other people being too close

lex pretend, Thursday, 3 July 2008 14:31 (sixteen years ago) link

The fashion when I was a youth was to head right to the back, is that where the schoolkids still go?

has always been this way, but is it because of a subconscious urge to be as far from the driver/point of authority as possible?

blueski, Thursday, 3 July 2008 14:32 (sixteen years ago) link

Front of top deck, preferably right but left if that's not available, or the seat behind the stairs on the top deck (right) if needs be.

Also I always sit on the outside of the seat which may sound selfish but EVERY TIME I don't I get sodding Buster Bloodvessel plonking himself down and squashing me.

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 3 July 2008 14:34 (sixteen years ago) link

I used to always be afraid to sit upstairs... my parents told me that that was where the bold people would go. LAte night bus experiences largely confirmed my parents' claims, but over time I became one of the bold people.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Thursday, 3 July 2008 14:35 (sixteen years ago) link

I've always imagined the upper deck to be like a big opium den. At the very least, it's got to be the place for semi-illicit drugs and swallows of whisky, right?

Kind of like the second-story of a downtown McDonald's that's usually blocked off with a yellow WET FLOOR board. Who knows what kind of McFlurries shenanigans are going on up there?

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 3 July 2008 14:36 (sixteen years ago) link

downstairs, right at the back. failing that, upstairs, right at the front.

I TAKE MY BUS-RIDING TO EXTREMES, FUCKAZ.

grimly fiendish, Thursday, 3 July 2008 14:37 (sixteen years ago) link

Buster Bloodvessel's lost a lot of weight now, Dingbod. Still not sure I'd want to sit next to him, though.

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 3 July 2008 14:38 (sixteen years ago) link

yeh, he'd spill his special brew all over you.

grimly fiendish, Thursday, 3 July 2008 14:43 (sixteen years ago) link

Not much of a pimp seat to us Stagecoach provincials, there's so little legroom here you can't even fit the narrow side of an A4 sheet between your seat and the seat in front. It even bothers me and I'm well under average height.

The teenagers on our single-deck buses (presumably mostly A-level college kids) all head straight for the back, yep. All the girls sit sideways on with their feet on the seat so they take up an entire double each and stare sullenly at the person opposite all journey. ADULTS PISS OFF IN YOUR BORING OFFICE CLOTHES, THIS IS OUR HALF OF THE BUS.

a passing spacecadet, Thursday, 3 July 2008 14:56 (sixteen years ago) link

If alone: top deck, frontish but not very front OR lower deck, first raised seats at the back.

With others: top deck, very front OR lower deck, very back. Occasionally top deck, very back.

On the single decker to university I always took the seats one row in front of the back seat, to the left.

emil.y, Thursday, 3 July 2008 23:19 (sixteen years ago) link

Downstairs, back seat if given the option. Otherwise downstairs if there's a double empty - don't mind someone sitting next to me but never bother sitting next to somebody already there. Otherwise, upstairs near the front as possible.
