Most cliches are not in the form of complete statements, but rather exist as verbal tics, such as "war-torn Iraq" or "beleaguered president" or "the size of a package of cigarettes".

Such cliches might be true enough, as they are applied, but they also tend to take on a life of their own that no longer requires validation by reality. It is a world in which promising young basketball players are always "the next Michael Jordan", which turns out never to be true.
