I think he must have been one of the greatest broadcast journalists of my time - or, perhaps, before my time. Another of those figures the world will probably not replace.

I've not experienced much of his work but I did recently watch a brilliant documentary he made Appalachia and Lyndon Johnson's America.
Also interviewed him a few years ago for the university radio station. found him utterly engaging and interested as well as interesting. sadly suspect the recording no longer exists.
Remember being very impressed at his ability to smoke ten cigarettes in the space of an interview that lasted little more than 20.
