Curt1s Stephens, Monday, 7 July 2008 20:38 (seventeen years ago)

I hope they still wear striped overalls and tall hats.

Farm manager, both old school rustic manliness and a high suicide rate.

Railroad Conductors and Yardmasters

Electrical and Electronics Repairers, Powerhouse, Substation and Relay

I don't know how broad the other categories are, necessarily, but this seems weird to me since I'm pretty sure there are operators on the high end of this putting away six figures while the low end has nonunion folks taking home probably $30K or less.

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 03:41 (seventeen years ago)

Most of these probably require skilled labour

You can call these jobs blue collar, but many of them you still have to have a college degree, secondary education or at least got some similar training or experience through military service to get your foot in the door.

(call me old-fashioned, but i also voted locomotive engineers)

(i mean come on who hasn't wanted to be a locomotive engineer at at least one point in their life)

I guess i could fit into the electronics section, in the low-voltage area. I'm paid better now than my last two tech jobs, which admittedly were shit wages.

Job satisfaction is far higher, tho. We even have an office cat.

having found out the answer, I can well believe it. There's some some seriously complex analogue computers in those things.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

I voted for the construction supervision one because it seems like you'd get to have a gut and stand around pointing, putting your hands on your hips, folding your arms and generally looking self-assured and important a lot without seeming like a jerk.

Also I have a friend who does construction management and he's a good guy.

Having spent yesterday digging thru a backlog of 2+ months worth of trade mags, I find that i'm now in an industry where the main professional org has its own PAC.
