2032
Housewives shock in blue
What in the world is it coming to
What in the world

2033
Cannabis in tea
What in the world
Acid is free
What in the world
If daddy could see today
He'd be turning in his grave
If mummy could see the way
The boys and girls
And the manner in which
They talk to their parents

2034
Women fight the wars
Men are too bored
They're scrubbing floors
Men are too bored
They're staying at home
Doing the chores
What in the world
Do you remember when this life
Was in perspective
And the grownups were respected
They'd give up a seat on the bus
Open your door with no fuss

2035
The whole world's one beehive
Throw us a line you might be in time
Throw us a line
What in the world
Who gets the girl
What in the world

two years pass...

So 2030 is as far in the future as 1990 is in the past. And since 1990 doesn't seem all that long ago, I expect 2030 will be here before we know it. So here's a thread to project your hopes, fears, possibilities and future lives on. How old will you be then? Will you still be sitting around at work, posting to ILX? Will you be rich? Will you be poor? Que sera sera?

I'll turn, wow, 61 that year. Huh. My kids will be 26 and 22. I guess I mostly hope they're both happy and healthy. If they have jobs, that'll be good too. (If there are still "jobs" in 2030.) I'll be doing some kind of work. I hope. (This is all making the statistical assumption that I will in fact be alive, obviously not guaranteed.) There's a good chance I'll still be East Tennessee, I suppose, since I'm likely to stay here at least while the kids are in school. I hope I've found some other ways to parlay writing and editing into money by then, because I'm not sure I can count on still working at the alt-weekly. (Tho at the moment we have two columnists who are older than that.) Since I'm not in a relationship at the moment, the longest possible relationship I'll be in then is 19 or 20 years. Which doesn't really seem likely. I sort of expect there will be at least a handful or so between now and then. But I hope I'm in a happy one, that would be nice.

I think by that point in my life I would like to be living in a smallish but nice urban apartment or co-op. I don't need much space, especially once the kids are gone. Maybe what I should aim for is trying to buy something like that in about 10 years. (This is also making the statistical assumption that I won't get rich at some point and just be able to buy whatever I want. It's a nice idea, but I need to plan to live pretty frugally I think.) And I sure hope I'm healthy, and not overly beset by aches, pains, or debilitating conditions. It would be nice if I was still doing a lot of mountain hikes. I hiked once with a guy in his 70s and his advice to me was, "Just keep doing it, don't stop. If you stop, it gets harder to start up again."

Hmm. Just thinking about this makes me want to do some more strategic thinking about what exactly I'm doing day to day.
