srsly tho, michael keaton's performance in this is really inspired--the speech he gives about being qualified (attending julliard, surviving the black plague, seeing the exorcist many times) is so classic

I haven't seen this movie in 15+ years, but the first photo on this thread instantly triggered a memory of that character, who I'd long forgotten about. What was his name, Ortho or something like that? I think I really liked him when I was a kid.

This is all so weird. Just three days ago, from my childhood home, I texted my wife to suggest we let the kids watch Beetlejuice. The very next day I found the original ticket stub from when I saw Beetlejuice. And now this! It's coming in threes. Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.

I haven't seen this in years, but I remember thinking that Keaton was the weak link in the film, I think I found him too schtick-y? People upthread seem to disagree.

nah, he's great. but it helps that there's only like 15 minutes of him in the movie. there's just enough of the character that you look forward to his appearances but not enough for him to get annoying.

yeah you get a load of coked up keaton fun, but not enough to undercut the malevolence of the vharacter. In the sequel he will be the genie from aladdin

I'm back in Chicago now, and, um, didn't take it with me (I was showing one of my daughters a childhood scrapbook, and it was nestled anachronistically amongst pictures from Sea World San Diego from about 8 years before that). But it was blue and about 1.5 inches by 1.5 inches. I also found some passed out in the theaters promo Beetlejuice ghost sighting brochure/guide.

Recently re-watched this and it was wonderful as always. However, if you can imagine that this was made nowadays, if you replaced all the practical effects with CGI, it would probably suck and we would all think Beetlejuice is just an annoying jerk.

My kids are into this. Amazing how much better it's held up than Roger rabbit.

I remember seeing "Batman" in '89 and thinking that Nicholson totally ripped off Keaton's "Beetlejuice" performanance to play the Joker. (Or maybe Burton just directed him that way)

sequel is surprisingly alright? obv. not as good as the first one but it could have been so much worse. mainly just good to see winona gothed out and the evolution of catherine o'hara's art. amusing approach to dealing with Jeffery Jones.

Watched the original for the first time in many years, with the kids. Held up very well.

oh no, they kill him off off-screen and never actually show him in flashbacks, the one flashback they have is animated, and every other representation is a painting. his character exists in the afterlife but is....altered

Didnt enjoy this overall but I found the bits with character in the afterlife very funny. The physical performance, the voice & delivery, the sight gag that happens when he talks, it all really got me. Wish the whole frantic movie had slowed down for more gags like that.

i'm sure plenty of the other afterlife characters were just as clever, but the rapidfire editing didnt often give my old eyes a chance to notice and admire a lot of the amazing costumes & practical makeup effects. i can see myself enjoying this more in a home viewing when i can freezeframe or go to .5x speed and really admire the details

I liked this… agree it’s not as good as the original, but it was pretty fun for a sequel three decades late

One too many subplots though, they could have just cut out the whole thing with beetlejuice’s wife - monica belluici criminally underused throughout and the resolution to that was pretty zzzz (otoh it did lead to one of the best sequences in the movie… beetlejuice as homage to Italian horror)

Michael Keaton still fantastic

This movie is a mostly incoherent mess that feels like it was cobbled together from several scripts that were also messes, but I saw it (against all my instincts) and ... not terrible! A few bits, including the Bava styled flashback, are downright inspired, and all the callbacks to the first movie could have been a lot more lazy. No doubt Burton, his imagination renewed, is hard at work at a Herbie reboot.
