evil poll

Cronenberg has the better hit-to-miss ratio, not to mention wider-ranging ideas. I love Verhoeven a lot but when he's bad he's awful... sexual creepiness of both directors oddly similar

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 10 July 2008 15:02 (seventeen years ago)

but Cronenberg can be awful in a boring way, whereas Verhoeven is rarely boring.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 10 July 2008 15:05 (seventeen years ago)

yeah hollow man is maybe the worst movie ive ever seen but i would never turn down a chance to watch it again, while lots of the non-campy cronenberg stuff is more "interesting" but leaves me cold

and what, Thursday, 10 July 2008 15:07 (seventeen years ago)

that is kinda true - when Verhoeven is bad its like watching an oddly comic carwreck

x-post

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 10 July 2008 15:07 (seventeen years ago)

verhoeven has said again and again that he doesn't think "linearly" with his movies - his natural impulse is to just string scenes together without regard for narrative shape, yet his movies always seem to work better as movies, feel more satisyfing/cathartic/thrilling than cronenerg, who always seems to hold back narrative pleasure, or trick you into thinking you're about to experience a moment of narrative pleasure

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 10 July 2008 15:20 (seventeen years ago)

Verhoeven's films are definitely more sensual; Cronenberg's are "sensual."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 10 July 2008 15:22 (seventeen years ago)

not a contest.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 10 July 2008 15:33 (seventeen years ago)

I didn't hesitate for a split second before clicking Cronenberg.

Savannah Smiles, Thursday, 10 July 2008 16:12 (seventeen years ago)

Cronenberg's doesn't really have anything comparable to Showgirls in his ouevre - can't decide if that's a good or bad thing

I voted for Cronenberg in the end – for The Fly, Dead Ringers, and Naked Lunch mostly.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 10 July 2008 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

Cronenberg

Then again, I'm a bit of a fanboy... I'm about to travel to Paris to see "The Fly" opera hat he's directing!

other than that I get 'eastern promises' and 'black book' confused (haven't seen either of them) they don't strike me as that comparable.

akm, Thursday, 10 July 2008 17:24 (seventeen years ago)

Verhoeven has made way fewer movies, that's for sure

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 10 July 2008 17:26 (seventeen years ago)

Verhoeven. He probably needed the vote, plus Showgirls is better than anything.

CRONENBERG is kind of my main man.

That opera still of the Fly looks like some twisted version of "Starlight Express"!

Abbott, Thursday, 14 August 2008 00:48 (seventeen years ago)

I woulda said Cronenberg no doubt, but some good points raised for V

I know, right?, Thursday, 14 August 2008 00:50 (seventeen years ago)

If Cronenberg doesn't win this, I'm burning down the internets.

when i think of paul verhoeven i think of spetters and the fourth man and then i think of renee soutendijk and THEN i think of my favorite movie eve of destruction!

they should have had cronenberg do a sequel to eve of destruction.

verhoeven unleashed jan de bont and my lord and master rutger hauer on to the world AND the glory that is starship troopers, but, man, cronenberg has made like a dozen movies that i adore and that STILL, after all these years and no matter how many times i have seen them, have the ability to freak me out. in a good way. in a freaky way. in a visceral total body way. hate to use a cliche, but the dude is a visionary. the only other current pedestals i own for people who still have the power to dazzle me are for lynch and herzog. when those three die hopefully there will be some young kids we haven't heard of yet who will dance on their graves with genius. otherwise you are left with fight club dude and dude who did pi or something. and that would just be sad.

scott seward, Thursday, 14 August 2008 23:38 (seventeen years ago)

I have hopes for Fincher but otherwise yeah I agree
