Did any of you, as church-going youth, engage in this competitive activity? I played it for 4 or 5 years, ca. ages 13-17. Will this be a thread that only Abbott responds to!?

I never did, but a friend from high school did, and his knowledge of the Bible was totally amazing! Like he could quickly recall all sorts of minor characters and what they did. Naturally he ended up a hardcore atheist.

Haw, so did I! At least a couple of my team-mates did as well.

That was at the National Championship. That was also where I once stabbed a kid in the leg with a pen!

roxymuzak, Saturday, 12 July 2008 21:47 (seventeen years ago)

why did you do that?

chicago kevin, Saturday, 12 July 2008 21:54 (seventeen years ago)

I just found this old geocities site that still has my name listed as a "top brain" LOLOLOLOL:

xpost, I was going crazy with this kid's abuse to a girlfriend of mine. We both calmed down as a result of this terrorist action and we kinda became friends after that.

This is bringing back many memories. The Johnson City team were definitely to be feared; had a kind of dynasty going with the Top Brain test.

roxymuzak, Saturday, 12 July 2008 21:56 (seventeen years ago)

he's probably a good friend. stabbings are usually a deal breaker for a lot of people.

Johnson City is right near where my ma grew up.

Sure! It was a tense time. xpost

if johnson city had a sense of humor about itself it would host an annual "johnson city sausage party" every summer.

chicago kevin, Saturday, 12 July 2008 22:18 (seventeen years ago)

I participated in Bible Bowl. That same summer, I was also chosen as my church's nominee for...er...best church camp kid. I had to go in for an interview with the head church camp guy, to determine how godly I was. He asked me for my favorite verse, and I said "For all have sinned, and fallen short of the glory of God", which would have been a sweet response, except that it was the verse everyone in church camp was required to memorize earlier that morning. AND THEN HE STARTED GIVING ME CRAP ABOUT IT, so I said "FUCK YOU church guy, I'm not going to put up with anymore of your shit" and then he said "it's on little kid" and we each pulled out our machetes and I took his ear off and it was awesome.

what denomination were you, and was this a cross-denominational deal?

velko, Sunday, 13 July 2008 05:19 (seventeen years ago)

Pentecostal. Many children communicated viscerally with the Lord Almighty that day. What was that movie, Jesus Camp? It was a lot like that.
