Shazam. So helpful for those 'what song IS this' questions.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 7 September 2009 16:13 (sixteen years ago)

i've been using shazam since 2003! although i pay a pound every time - is the shazam app free once you've paid for it (u know what i mean)?

Tracer Hand, Monday, 7 September 2009 16:15 (sixteen years ago)

Never had to pay anything for using it on iPhone! Maybe it's different over there?

i keep hearin that they're going to launch a model with the camera on the front, so that you can do video chat

but then the forthcoming "augmented reality" apps that depend on having the camera on the back (they display what's in front of you, only with "helpful" info overlayed on it) wouldn't work

unless they're going to go for TWO cameras!

Tracer Hand, Monday, 7 September 2009 16:32 (sixteen years ago)

exit strategy...for ny subway system. Enter what train you're getting on, then what train you're gonna transfer to, and it tells you which car to get in. CRUCIAL.

dan selzer, Monday, 7 September 2009 16:53 (sixteen years ago)

haha i love it

Tracer Hand, Monday, 7 September 2009 16:54 (sixteen years ago)

too bad they've locked the doors between trains now though.. i used to JUST make the first car of the L train before it pulled away and then work my way down the whole train as it passed under the east river so as to emerge from the last car once i got to 8th ave

Tracer Hand, Monday, 7 September 2009 16:56 (sixteen years ago)

This is a cool idea, but AT&T is already having crippling bandwidth problems, at least in the U.S., and I imagine the same might be true elsewhere with other providers, so they're probably not anxious to introduce anything that eats up additional bandwidth right now.

Is this the place to ask about tethering? I know AT&T aren't enabling it in the US any time soon but I'm tempted to just go ahead. What are the downsides if any and what's the risk that AT&T find out?

ljubljana, Sunday, 1 November 2009 15:22 (sixteen years ago)

you can't enable tethering in iphone > 3.1 OS

囧 (dyao), Sunday, 1 November 2009 15:32 (sixteen years ago)

Tracer: you need Instapaper for that

stet, Sunday, 1 November 2009 16:01 (sixteen years ago)

Is it worth downgrading to 3.0 to enable tethering? I would consider it if any loss of other functionality was minimal and the risks weren't that great.

ljubljana, Sunday, 1 November 2009 16:23 (sixteen years ago)

stet: got it now, use it every day, love it. I installed the Read Later bookmark on my work and home machines and it is LIKE BUTTAH

Tracer Hand, Monday, 2 November 2009 00:11 (sixteen years ago)

it's pretty much impossible to downgrade to 3.0 unless you have a 3g and not 3gs xp

Not really a hoonja-doonja question. Rather, a stupid question. If I have a US iphone, and I go to the UK, and I am in an area with free wireless, and I have roaming turned off and 3G disabled, can I still surf for free and download email using that free wireless? Surely, yes? or not? (maybe I'd still have to pay for voicemail?)

I've always been really happy with lastpass (sync seems less of a hassle, it's way cheaper than buying ios+osx+win licenses) but I feel like this might make me jump ship to 1password: http://www.macrumors.com/2014/06/30/ios-8-1-password-beta-demo/

sktsh, Tuesday, 1 July 2014 10:00 (eleven years ago)

Jumped from Wallet to 1password a couple months ago. Think the AgileBits coders are doing good work.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 2 July 2014 00:27 (eleven years ago)

Keepass and Dropbox forever.

Jeff, Wednesday, 2 July 2014 01:08 (eleven years ago)

1password looks sooooo much nicer than lastpass but apart from doing everything a bit more prettily i've never found a compelling reason to jump.

What I'm most scared of is the dropbox integration - if I'm stranded somewhere without my phone I can use a pc in an internet cafe to check my email just by logging in to lastpass in the browser without an app or plugin. Presumably w/1passwd if I did the same and tried to get my password out of the dropbox web interface, I'd still need to install the 1password app on this imaginary pc to actually get the password. Is that right? idk maybe I'm putting too much emphasis on a fairly unlikely fringe scenario

hrm what to do what to do

sktsh, Wednesday, 2 July 2014 09:22 (eleven years ago)

lastpass is slowly improving its design and i cant really imagine it wont get touchid integration asap

Not quite, I switched to 1password. Cost sucked, but I really wanted Touch ID integration. And it's generally nicer overall.

Lol didn't realize I was responding to posts from 2014.

Je55e, Monday, 2 February 2015 23:09 (eleven years ago)

yeah lastpass pretty much perfect for me

sktsh, Tuesday, 3 February 2015 09:47 (eleven years ago)

never got the hang of 1passwork for some reason. Would you guys recommend lastpass instead?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 3 February 2015 09:50 (eleven years ago)

I think on ios it works pretty much in the same way as 1password does. It works directly within safari through the sharing menu and is very slick espesh w/touchid, but if you want to log in to a dedicated app you're probably still going to have to swap into the app and copy the password, which is a bit more cumbersome.

I like it mainly because i need to sync between osx at home, windows desktops at work and ios in between which would mean buying several licenses for 1password, but you do still have to pay $12/yr for the iphone app.

tl/dr normally I would but if 1passwd didn't fit your way of working lastpass prob won't either

google keep *is* probably better. but i really need a cross mac/windows note taking capability with tagging and my fucking god it’s not easy. still have a simplenote/nvalt setup but it’s not great for windows.

Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 7 February 2020 20:40 (six years ago)

lol brett terpstra has been promising that for years. supposedly in beta, but fuck knows if it'll ever come out.

simplenote is fine between all of them, but i find the mac and windows clients *horrible* - iOS client is fine.

Fizzles, Friday, 7 February 2020 20:59 (six years ago)

to be fair, he's been promising nvultra for 1 year, not years. it looks like another one of these awful fisher price UI 'focussed' writing tools out of the box, but i guess we'll see.

i use nvalt on mac and 1writer on iphone with dropbox sync. it's the least bad i could find.

Boring iphone question: is there a way to capture whatever audio is playing on your iphone, with a recording app? I don't mean phone conversations, but recording sound from an app. Like how you used to use 'recorder' on your old pc 20 years ago to capture what was playing over the soundboard? I don't have access to an external recording device so can't use headphones/line-out, but am looking for an app to record whatever sound an app is playing on my phone. Anyone?

Scampidocio (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 8 July 2020 07:09 (five years ago)

There are some hacks. You can screen record some things and convert the saved file.

beard papa, Wednesday, 8 July 2020 07:16 (five years ago)

I think you're right! I just came across something like that. Screen record w/ audio, then use QT to export as audio only. I think that might do the trick.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 15 October 2021 16:22 (four years ago)

I don't use Siri so the only ones I find very useful are ones I can put on the share sheet. I use one that Uploads to Imgur, which is great for posting images here. Another for creating a QR code, one that starts playing a podcast when my phone connects to a particular Bluetooth device, and another that mounts a network drive when my home network is connected.

beard papa, Friday, 15 October 2021 17:02 (four years ago)

ooh the imgur one sounds useful.

what do you mean by “when my home network is connected”? you mean when your phone is on the same wifi as your home devices you mount a drive??

Tracer Hand, Friday, 15 October 2021 17:57 (four years ago)

using nvultra (new version of nvalt) on macos, and had always used simplenote on the phone - text entry comes up quickly and easily and integrated with simplenote, but nvultra just runs off your folder structure and syncs via dropbox or whatever.

so i’ve been looking for a phone and ipad markdown notes app that’s as easy to use as sn. bear, ulysses and iawriter all have a slightly painful folder structure for quick note taking. 1Writer is *probably* the best and easiest, but it’s still fiddly.

any recommendations?

Fizzles, Tuesday, 21 December 2021 10:49 (four years ago)

what's wrong with SN?

stet, Tuesday, 21 December 2021 11:34 (four years ago)

it doesn't sync with nvultra and also separately i was having a problem with the navalt target folder. HOEWVER i have now sorted out that problem, renamed the folder so it's one that i use for all notes now. using nvultra as a macOS editor, and nvalt as a bridging sync with simplenote. so i'm good again.

i mean i just made things difficult for myself basically. no fault of any of the apps.
