going to have to link to the wiki, i can't remember the plotlines from the wondrous New Wave/Sci-fi of the 60's naming schemas

Season 1 episodes

Eisbaer, Monday, 14 July 2008 07:32 (seventeen years ago)

Voted for "A Taste of Armageddon". I always liked the way it takes off the implacable stupidity of war.

Noodle Vague, Monday, 14 July 2008 07:42 (seventeen years ago)

space seed :)

DG, Monday, 14 July 2008 12:11 (seventeen years ago)

Devil in the Dark over CityForever, Balance of Terror, Space Seed.

(I haven't seen any of these in 15-20 years)

Dr Morbius, Monday, 14 July 2008 13:16 (seventeen years ago)

I've seen about two-thirds of these. City on the Edge of Forever gets my vote - it's amazing how so much story gets packed into a mere 45 minutes, and yet flows perfectly.

Duane Barry, Monday, 14 July 2008 13:30 (seventeen years ago)

(probably 52 minutes uncut. ah, '60s TV and its 'limited' ads)

Dr Morbius, Monday, 14 July 2008 13:39 (seventeen years ago)

The Naked Time

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 14 July 2008 16:02 (seventeen years ago)

but oh man what a great season

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 14 July 2008 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

that's the accelerated aging one, yeah?

Dr Morbius, Monday, 14 July 2008 16:04 (seventeen years ago)

no its shirtless Sulu and Spock with emotions

hmmmm

Dr Morbius, Monday, 14 July 2008 16:05 (seventeen years ago)

I really *want* to vote "Where No Man Has Gone Before" just for glowy-eyed Sally Kellerman and Gary Lockwood, but my heart says "City."

Naked Time!

jel --, Monday, 14 July 2008 16:30 (seventeen years ago)

I could pretty much watch any of them though.

jel --, Monday, 14 July 2008 16:31 (seventeen years ago)

yeah very few clunkers in Season 1 (Charlie X is pretty meh, Shore Leave is too silly even by Season 3 standards). I do like that in Season 1 all the minor characters (Uhura in particular, Nurse Chapel, Sulu, etc.) get waaay more screen-time and attention, they cast has way more of an ensemble feel than later episodes.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 14 July 2008 17:16 (seventeen years ago)

Watching through the full series still, almost at the end of Season 2 I can safely say S1 is way way way better, and Shakey OTM about the "minor" characters getting more screen time. There was a stretch I just passed where I didn't even see Sulu (arguably my fave character) for about 7 eps. Very bummed as I like Uhura and Sulu a lot more than, say, Scotty/Chekov.

Will M., Monday, 14 July 2008 17:43 (seventeen years ago)

Chekov's inclusion was pretty lame at first - altho the attempt to obscure a Monkees/Beatles cash-in character by making him Russian is pretty funny

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 14 July 2008 17:46 (seventeen years ago)

and Season 1 may be better in general, but Season 2 is where the series hits its real high points (Amok Time! but also Mirror, Mirror, a handful of others).

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 14 July 2008 17:49 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Saturday, 19 July 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

i have seen all of these in the last two months since i recently got the DVD set.

I really *want* to vote "Where No Man Has Gone Before" just for glowy-eyed Sally Kellerman and Gary Lockwood

great episode + one of the awesome indelible images of the series

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 20 July 2008 01:10 (seventeen years ago)

balance of terror, squire of gothos, arena, corbomite maneuver, conscience of the king (aka perry mason in space) and court martial were all great

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 20 July 2008 01:12 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Sunday, 20 July 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

surprised that "space seed"/khan didn't get more votes ...

Eisbaer, Sunday, 20 July 2008 23:15 (seventeen years ago)

nerds be conservative today :(

DG, Sunday, 20 July 2008 23:20 (seventeen years ago)

I thought I'd seen all of the original series, but this thread has made me realise I've seen hardly any.

chap, Sunday, 20 July 2008 23:47 (seventeen years ago)

no Arena love?

Gukbe, Sunday, 20 July 2008 23:56 (seventeen years ago)

five years pass...

Just watched the "City on the edge of forever" for the first time since 1967, probably.

Mark G, Sunday, 26 January 2014 18:25 (twelve years ago)

balance of terror, squire of gothos, devil in the dark, the corbomite maneuver, arena, even miri all shamefully robbed here for the novelty of spock in jeans

i want to say one word to you, just one word:buzzfeed (difficult listening hour), Sunday, 26 January 2014 19:32 (twelve years ago)

Gotta say that image at the top from Charlie X gave me motherfucking nightmares when I was a kid.

Ian from Etobicoke (Phil D.), Sunday, 26 January 2014 20:32 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, that episode also stuck with me, Charlie X innit?

Mark G, Sunday, 26 January 2014 21:29 (twelve years ago)

Memo to self: read message you are replying to..

Mark G, Sunday, 26 January 2014 21:30 (twelve years ago)

four years pass...

Charlie X on right now, I'd never seen it before. Uhura improvising a coquettish love song about Spock, to the tune of Charlie Is My Darling, while a smirking Spock accompanies her on his Vulcan space harp - one of the highlights! Robert Walker (Jr) is good in this.

Never Turn Your Back On Virginia Woolf (Tom D.), Thursday, 10 January 2019 11:00 (seven years ago)

Image at top of thread is very David Lynch to me in isolation

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 10 January 2019 11:15 (seven years ago)

Watching this properly for the first time (I found it boring when I was a kid, post-Star Wars) and something that strikes me is how incredible it often looks, particularly during scenes on the bridge. Such great set design, with shot-after-shot of beautiful framing and color. Just got done with Balance of Terror, my favorite episode so far.

They did an amazing job of remastering it, it looks so vibrant.
