In the criminal justice system, sexually based offenses are considered especially heinous. In New York City, the dedicated detectives who investigate these vicious felonies are members of an elite squad known as the Special Victims Unit. These are their stories.

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 July 2008 20:49 (seventeen years ago)

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 14 July 2008 21:04 (seventeen years ago)

J0rdan, how young are you? Jeezus, 6th grade?

(no biggie, I just feel incredibly old at this moment in time)

Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 July 2008 21:05 (seventeen years ago)

im 20, trial by jury debuted like 6-7 years ago right?

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 July 2008 21:11 (seventeen years ago)

oh shit

never mind i am confusing trial by jury with something else. i thought trial by jury was a non-drama look at the trials of irl cases

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 July 2008 21:12 (seventeen years ago)

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 July 2008 21:13 (seventeen years ago)

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 July 2008 21:13 (seventeen years ago)

I remember it. They ended up on late-nite CNBC a lot too.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 July 2008 21:15 (seventeen years ago)

Man, I just learned from this article that Dick Wolf has made about $750 million off of these shows.

Also:
Mr. Wolf and the Universal executives had better luck at NBC, which premiered "Law and Order" in the fall of 1990. Before it aired, Mr. Wolf made one change. Compared to everything else on television, "Law and Order" moved at a lightning pace, with no scene lasting more than two pages. This was giving test viewers whiplash. Mr. Wolf added a "chung chung" chime and inserted a location card between scenes to let viewers take a breath.

Eazy, Monday, 14 July 2008 21:16 (seventeen years ago)

the most brilliant part of the series is that the crime is always the first scene. ropes you in immediately.

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 July 2008 21:17 (seventeen years ago)

good svu on right now where they are apparently chasing the riddler

max, Monday, 14 July 2008 22:17 (seventeen years ago)

I love SVU and as is generally known Mariska can't get enough of me but the original is the best by an outrageous distance

J0hn D., Monday, 14 July 2008 22:19 (seventeen years ago)

The first five seasons (basically, the Logan era) of the original series are among the best in t.v. drama history period that I can think of.

BEN STONE 4EVER

The Yellow Kid, Monday, 14 July 2008 22:25 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Ooh I made a mistake. Blatantly should have gone for the original but I'm dedicated to CI. Alsos, what the hell was Homicide Life On The Streets? I thought that was an L&O show while Trial By Jury was just a bizarre spin off. Was Homicide a rip off?

VeronaInTheClub, Thursday, 17 July 2008 01:41 (seventeen years ago)

i like mariska hargitay and think she is uncommonly beautiful but i am too creeped out by svu to watch.

^I really want to know!

"In New York City's war on crime, the worst criminal offenders are pursued by the detectives of the Major Case Squad. These are their stories"

VeronaInTheClub, Thursday, 17 July 2008 01:53 (seventeen years ago)

Homicide I think might have had behind the scenes people in common with L&O (hence all the crossovers, and John Munch going directly over to SVU) but it based on a non-fiction book about Baltimore written by the later creator of The Wire. They were both "dark cop shows" compared to everything else on the air, but Homicide was a lot more character-driven, relied more on continuity, and is probably more similar to NYPD Blue (and definitely The Wire).

Nhex, Thursday, 17 July 2008 01:56 (seventeen years ago)

no "conviction"? as if anyone would vote for it.

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 17 July 2008 02:03 (seventeen years ago)

You guys last night I saw a reality show called "Jail" that was done L&O style about the dudes that run the holding pen at night. It was amazingly terrible.

My answer to this question had always been the original Law And Order. Big George Dzundza fan here. I loved Paul Sorvino. And Jerry Orbach, forget about it! Dan Florek as the police captain was the best of the Law And Order police captains. I was sad to see him go from the original series but was happy to see him return on Special Victims Unit. Terrific actor.
