You'd have to pay me to watch either
― Tom D., Tuesday, 15 July 2008 09:44 (seventeen years ago)
Gok Wan always manages to sound completely insincere no matter what he's saying.
― Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 09:45 (seventeen years ago)
i mean, i'd be pushing it to say i hated Gok's Fashion Fix but the whole thing premise of the show just makes me mad. i like Gok okay but man, what a truly awful stylist.
― jed_, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 09:45 (seventeen years ago)
I don't think I've ever heard him speak
― Tom D., Tuesday, 15 July 2008 09:45 (seventeen years ago)
Is he American?
― Tom D., Tuesday, 15 July 2008 09:46 (seventeen years ago)
No he's from Leicester.
― Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 09:48 (seventeen years ago)
Lie-cester? He presents one of those shows where ugly people are persuaded to take their clothes off, yes?
― Tom D., Tuesday, 15 July 2008 09:51 (seventeen years ago)
yes. terrible show.
― jed_, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 09:52 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah. He tells them they all look "fabulous". I'm all in favour of positive self-image, but sometimes that shit just ain't right.
― Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 09:52 (seventeen years ago)
i'd like to see his try it with an actual fat person rather than a pleasantly plump 30-something.
― jed_, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 09:54 (seventeen years ago)
Mary Queens of Shops is pretty funny sometimes.
― nate woolls, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 09:56 (seventeen years ago)
Did you spot Mark E Smith's ex-wife last week?
― Mark G, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 10:00 (seventeen years ago)
on Gok's Fix, yes. she was the only one who styled a decent outfit and didn't seem like a complete cunt doing it.
― jed_, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 10:04 (seventeen years ago)
in fact, she seemed very nice indeed.
I saw Gok Wan's show for five minutes a couple of weeks ago and it made me want to projectile vomit.
― Just got offed, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 10:05 (seventeen years ago)
Brix?
― Tom D., Tuesday, 15 July 2008 10:08 (seventeen years ago)
Daytime TV should be confined to the daytime is all I have to say on this matter.
― Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 10:08 (seventeen years ago)
problems with Fashion Fix;
if you can afford to buy some £200 dress from House of Fraser and sew £50 worth of crap on it for one statement going out outfit you'll probably never wear again then you can probably afford to buy designer anyway. ok, you might not be able to afford Lanvin or McQueen but you could probably stretch to Mui Mui and you can probably wear the Mui Mui dress 20+ times.
the idea that high street fashion is about trying to imitate what high fashion is doing rather than it being a separate thing to itself (maybe that's the culture now? that's another problem)
Gok's outfits are shit and look cheap.
― jed_, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 10:12 (seventeen years ago)
Tom, yes, Brix.

I suspected it wsan't Kay Carroll
― Tom D., Tuesday, 15 July 2008 10:16 (seventeen years ago)
Since when did the Jam release a single called "Nigel Kennedy"?
― Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 10:28 (seventeen years ago)
Brix and NK are ooooold news, Marcello.
― Venga, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 10:29 (seventeen years ago)
If we get through for two minutes only It will be a Nigel Kennedy ...

^^Lolz Gok should have stuck to making unattractive people look attractive and Mary is evils. problems with Fashion Fix;
Gok's outfits are shit and look cheap ^AMEN preacher! Also I'm loathed to accept any tv programme that accepts Alexa Chung's 'presenting skills'
― VeronaInTheClub, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 10:31 (seventeen years ago)
That'll be one of Bruce Foxton's songs then (xp).
― Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 10:31 (seventeen years ago)
Alexa Chung's interview with (insert fashion icon, forgot his name) was actually well handled.
― Mark G, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 10:37 (seventeen years ago)
Karl Lagerfeld.
For once, she impressed me.

I read that as "one of Bruce Forsyth's songs then" and was pondering a 'larry grayson' rejoinder. but waited.

b-side of "Shut that door" which I remember him doing on TV...
"Shut that door, Shut that door, there's a freezing draught in here Shut that door, Shut that door, I'm feeling rather queer..."
Millions avoided dashing out to buy it..
So who has the time to film an old larry grayson single and make a video of old still images? And does the b-side as well? Blimey!
― Mark G, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 10:52 (seventeen years ago)
I won't hear a word said against Larry
― Tom D., Tuesday, 15 July 2008 10:53 (seventeen years ago)
"We talked about why I'd received no offers of work of any kind. Peter told me that the Larry Grayson Show was a complete crib of my stuff and that John Inman was doing the same thing on the BBC. Of course! It hadn't hit me before, but they've found other people to do it - and cheaper people in every sense."

Maybe I'm just not used to watching telly, but I saw that Gok programme, and it just seemed so looong! It went on forever!
― I know, right?, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 11:04 (seventeen years ago)
(OK, just clocked. was thinking of Kenny Everett for some reason...)
Luckily Pete and Dud came to Ken's rescue shortly afterwards and cast him in their sidesplitting remake of Hound Of The Baskervilles.

Cook used to be one of his writers..
xpost really? Warhol's bloke?

Blimey. Must have been on holiday.
― Mark G, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 11:10 (seventeen years ago)
He said that Carry On Cowboy was the original inspiration for his own Lonesome Cowboy. Don't think Warhol ever got to work with Dana and Terry-Thomas, though.
― Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 11:11 (seventeen years ago)

plus all the amendments gok makes to the clothes he fixes up, would come un-done in one wash
I have +1 gf who is firmly on your side re:mary portas jed : )
― czn, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 11:28 (seventeen years ago)
I have enjoyed MQOS this series, but it is kinda samey i.e. the same fix for all shops : chuck out the tat, do up the shop and get some designer labels in.
Mary's great - I heard that she is living with the fashion editor of Grazia after ditching Mr. Portas.
On the other hand Gok is wretched in every way.
― Dr.C, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 11:53 (seventeen years ago)
Dear me!
Suddenly Gok is teh most hated.
That TV Quick 'personality of the year' must be his this year!
― Mark G, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 13:15 (seventeen years ago)
He was on JRoss last weekend.
"You had me at "I'll show you", but lost me on "Be a bit gay"!!"
Gok was not best pleased. But suddenly he was, again.
Think there was a bit of an edit.
― Mark G, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 13:18 (seventeen years ago)
Look, until you people have seen "What not to wear US" you have no idea how bad this shit can be.
― I know, right?, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 13:20 (seventeen years ago)
^They destroyed the UK version by replacing the two loveable bitches Trinny and Susannah with a transvestite and a boy on it and they were called Mica and something or other. Who is in the US version? Is it someone that used to be on America's Next Top Model????
― VeronaInTheClub, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 14:04 (seventeen years ago)
You just have to see it, I don't know how to stress how deflated the whole enterprise is enough. Most people look completely untransformed and they have no idea how to use editing or music. It's so cheap looking too.
― I know, right?, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 14:11 (seventeen years ago)
Gok's show did provide the best laugh of the week when the camp "stylist" (aren't they all?) walked into a wall at the end of the runway.
cozen, i knew yr 1gf would be on my side!

Last night, again..
Yeah, she was the one that wasn't all "My clientelle wouldn't be seen dead in a £10 bikini set" and was all "you buy one of (my) collection, it should be able to live in your wardrobe for 10 years"
― Mark G, Friday, 18 July 2008 10:21 (seventeen years ago)
I think mary portas looks like ilx's lara in that pic posted above, but she doesn't usually
― czn, Friday, 18 July 2008 10:22 (seventeen years ago)
Brix = VERY good at dressing her customers, also married to the guy who set up Woodhouse, hence Shoreditch fashion mini-empire. He does START for Men shop across the street.
― suzy, Friday, 18 July 2008 12:12 (seventeen years ago)
another problem w/ the premise is that even if you think Gok's a good stylist, the message it puts across is "if you have the fashion nous of a top stylist, YOU TOO can look high fashion at high street prices!"
But I like Gok! His positivity is a RAY OF LIGHT against the black holes of incessant dickness and negativity usually present in that kind of show (or so says his press pack. No! I really think that). And while How to Look Good Naked may have never tried to deal with the mordibly obese, it did have one person who'd had a mastectomy, which is a bolder move than the usual easy targets of makeover-style shows.
― Merdeyeux, Friday, 18 July 2008 22:39 (seventeen years ago)
good points, Merdeyeux. i like him too.
― jed_, Friday, 18 July 2008 23:02 (seventeen years ago)
yeah.
"Fashion fix" is a must in the house as Wife and kids are all total experts and voiceopinions all the way through. Often, they do say "What is the point in allthis though?"
― Mark G, Saturday, 19 July 2008 07:32 (seventeen years ago)
i find myself increasingly tolerant of this kind of stuff. merdeyeux OTM about gok's positivity: i like that a lot. and any programme with brix on it has to rule.
portas herself is a joy (although the programme bores me, really).
― grimly fiendish, Saturday, 19 July 2008 08:56 (seventeen years ago)
Gok's OK by me. Seems to favour sharp mod suits and winkle-pickers himself, which is always right as far as I'm concerned.
― Soukesian, Saturday, 19 July 2008 10:42 (seventeen years ago)
