I'm traveling around a bit this summer and thought that as an adjunct to that I should use it to explore some of the books/music/films that are rooted in the places I am going. So to kick this off I am off to NYC, Boston, Anaheim (so LA/OC), Seattle (Probably more time spent in Everett, Skagitt Valley and on the sound) and Minneapolis/St Paul.
I started with City of Quartz and some Bukowski for LA, but where to go next?

Obviously you have to read some Garrison Keillor for Minneapolis/St. Paul. I assume you don't need to be recommended any music from there.

Boston,
i always suggest the isabella stewart gardner museum as the courtyard there is the most beautiful place in the city.

wait - you want books, movies, etc. set in these places rather than actual things to see while in them, right?
― ENBB, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 14:52 (seventeen years ago)
set in or inspired by etc.
― ENBB, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 14:53 (seventeen years ago)

Boston is the blankest canvas for me I think. I got Cheers, Charles Emmerson Winchester III and Dirty Water by the Standels, but other than that I really have not image of it. Possibly I won't have more than that afterwards as we're off to a wedding out Salem way and are in town for not much more than 36 hours.

ENBB on the button.
salem is nice in the summer and fall.
― chicago kevin, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 14:55 (seventeen years ago)
The place the wedding is in looks pretty nice. Out in a converted barn some ways out of town.

there was a good book written by two boston globe reporters about the whitey bulger/fbi fiasco called black mass that's pretty insightful and gives an insight into the whole "code of silence" thing that kept charlestown and southie pretty much out of the jurisdiction of the cops.

Can someone recommend me something positive about Southern California. Mike Davis has convinced me that it should be towed out to sea and sunk.
