Best comic book movie adaptation (indie/Euro/comic strip/other comics)

This is a companion poll to Nick's superhero/mainstream comic book movies. I've tried to include all the movies I can think of based on comic strips, non-American comics, and English-language indie comics, though I've left out a few obscure ones no one would probably vote for anyway. There's no anime on the list, because that would make it ridiculously large, and because so many if not most anime movies are based on comics anyway. No TV or straight-to-video movies either.

Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties

s1ocki, Friday, 18 July 2008 12:23 (seventeen years ago)

Really? I haven't seen it, but I thought the consensus was the Garfield movies aren't that good.

Tuomas, Friday, 18 July 2008 12:25 (seventeen years ago)

Saw Heavy Metal for the first time recently and roffled at John Candy as the voice of Den.

Rock Hardy, Friday, 18 July 2008 12:28 (seventeen years ago)

Killer COndom's gotta be worth a punt

blueski, Friday, 18 July 2008 12:31 (seventeen years ago)

i wasn't actually serious.

s1ocki, Friday, 18 July 2008 12:32 (seventeen years ago)

first one is way better

s1ocki, Friday, 18 July 2008 12:32 (seventeen years ago)

The titular killer condom monster in the movie was designed by H.R. Giger! It's a good movie, in a tongue-in-cheek B rate horror sense, just like the comic.

(xx-post)

Tuomas, Friday, 18 July 2008 12:33 (seventeen years ago)

Went for A History Of Violence coz its GREAT but could have been Men In Black (Detective Goren!), Josie And The Pussycats (PARKER POSEY),Addams FamilySHIIIIT.
I didn't see OLDBOY. FUCK! Can I vote again? PLEASE!

VeronaInTheClub, Friday, 18 July 2008 12:36 (seventeen years ago)

Oldboy's gotta win this. Was going to vote for Ghost World before I saw it.

chap, Friday, 18 July 2008 12:44 (seventeen years ago)

I saw The Twelve Tasks of Asterix, voted for it and then read the rest of the list. That movie is so great and I was it so many times when I was a kid (I think it was one of like 5 VHS' that we had) that I couldnt not vote for it. Even though, after reading the list, there are quite a few good movies in there. Also, while we are on the Asterix tip, I think you forgot the third Asterix movie, "Asterix at the Olympic Games". But that's OK because it is incredibly shitty.

Jibe, Friday, 18 July 2008 12:45 (seventeen years ago)

"I was it" is "I saw it" obviously...

Jibe, Friday, 18 July 2008 12:45 (seventeen years ago)

Asterix and Obelix Take On Caesar [live action]

saw a bit of this, v badly dubbed, where Asterix has big spiders crawling all over him and one goes in his mouth. urgh.

blueski, Friday, 18 July 2008 12:46 (seventeen years ago)

The Twelve Tasks of Asterix is indeed great, I think it's one of the best non-American animated features ever, and definitely the best Asterix film. I just love the bossa nova tune in the end! IIRC it's the only Asterix film Uderzo and Coscinny actually wrote, even though it's not based on any of the Asterix books.

Tuomas, Friday, 18 July 2008 12:48 (seventeen years ago)

And yeah, sorry for missing Asterix at the Olympic Games.

Tuomas, Friday, 18 July 2008 12:50 (seventeen years ago)

I've never seen 12 Tasks, I quite want to check it out now. Caught the live action Asterix & Cleopatra on TV recently and it was rather good fun.

chap, Friday, 18 July 2008 12:51 (seventeen years ago)

12 Tasks is totally a must for all Asterix fans! The story is new (not adapted from the comic books) but quite funny and witty and true to the spirit of the comic, probably because Coscinny and Uderzo were involved in writing it.

Tuomas, Friday, 18 July 2008 12:56 (seventeen years ago)

Live action Asterix & Cleopatra is the only good live action Asterix film. The first one is Okish and the third one (not in the poll) is an incredible turd that cost a fortune and it still amazes me that people agreed to put up 78M€ for that shitty shitty movie.

Yeah, agree with Tuomas (and my vote :D) 12 Tasks is really great.

Jibe, Friday, 18 July 2008 12:57 (seventeen years ago)

Wow. Movies I haven't seen vs. movies that are absolute shit.

I might have to go with Ghost World by default, even though I'm not particularly crazy about it. Unless I vote for the unfettered batshittery that is Popeye. Hmmm...

Deric W. Haircare, Friday, 18 July 2008 14:30 (seventeen years ago)

12 Tasks A+ for the Place That Drives You Mad

blueski, Friday, 18 July 2008 14:30 (seventeen years ago)

Haha yeah that bit is great. I also seem to remember, though not very clearly, an awesome cave where a skeleton plays ping pong with his head or something like that. Also, the meal that is supposedly impossible to finish is great "A mountain of caviar! With its little toast!"

Jibe, Friday, 18 July 2008 14:32 (seventeen years ago)

rocketeer ftw

remy bean, Friday, 18 July 2008 14:35 (seventeen years ago)

I voted Timecop.

Should Alvin and the Chipmunks have been included?

jel --, Friday, 18 July 2008 15:31 (seventeen years ago)

Was it a comic first? I didn't include movies like Casper, because Casper a cartoon before it was a comic, or Aliens Vs. Predator, which is based on a comic, but the comic itself is obviously based on the Alien and Predator movies.

Tuomas, Friday, 18 July 2008 15:38 (seventeen years ago)

no aeon flux = no cred

DavidM, Friday, 18 July 2008 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

I'm a big fan of korean movies but I'm still kind of surprised that I'm tilting towards oldboy in this.

Edward III, Friday, 18 July 2008 16:00 (seventeen years ago)

Prince Valiant [1997]

Whoa, really?! Who was this aimed at, octogenarians?

Oilyrags, Friday, 18 July 2008 16:00 (seventeen years ago)

also I'm anticipating the fabulous furry freak bros movie with a mixture of excitement and fear

Edward III, Friday, 18 July 2008 16:04 (seventeen years ago)

Aeon Flux isn't a comic.

Tuomas, Friday, 18 July 2008 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

Suspect there are more Japanimation examples than are listed here (Lone Wolf and Cub was an comic first, no?) Oldboy very tough to vote against (even in imperfection it's still better than 99% of everything else.)

Alex in SF, Friday, 18 July 2008 18:02 (seventeen years ago)

There's quite a few Japanese live action films based on manga, I couldn't find a proper list for those, so I only included the ones I could remember. I totally forgot about the Lone Wolf and Cub movies though, sorry about that.

Tuomas, Saturday, 19 July 2008 08:51 (seventeen years ago)

Alvin and The Chipmunks belongs in the "best 7" single movie adaptation" thread

I saw half an hour of Killer Condom on TV once, it was way different from the comic in style but seemed an excellent adaptation

also not in the poll: Sin City. hate hate hate the comics, loved the incredibly faithful movie adaptation (cos all the tough guy posturing comes across as jokes instead of Miller's 87.6% dead seriousness.

energy flash gordon, Saturday, 19 July 2008 09:32 (seventeen years ago)

Sin City is in the other poll, so I didn't include it here.

Tuomas, Saturday, 19 July 2008 09:39 (seventeen years ago)

(searches)

uh, what a shambles of a list.

energy flash gordon, Saturday, 19 July 2008 10:51 (seventeen years ago)

Have to see Modesty Blaise again. Fans of the original strip really hate it, but IIRC, it's basically done as an Avengers movie, and a pretty good one at that.

Soukesian, Saturday, 19 July 2008 10:58 (seventeen years ago)

Persepolis.

kenan, Saturday, 19 July 2008 11:17 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

I love that the '90s yielded a Phantom movie AND a Prince Valiant movie. I saw the Phantom in a theater. Srsly all I remember was purple-leatoard on a horse. I remember some of the strip runs from around the same time better than that.

I voted American Splendor.

Abbott, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 23:25 (seventeen years ago)

I kind of hate Ghost World movie, but it might be 'fear of what's in yourself is what you hate." But I at least smile sometimes! Pretty Classic when Buscemi disses the Cheap Suit Serenaders record, tho.

Abbott, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 23:26 (seventeen years ago)

Was tempted to vote for 'Snoopy, Come Home.'

Abbott, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 23:27 (seventeen years ago)

Is Cheap Suit Serenaders Crumb's band?

Tuomas, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 05:22 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, he was in it, and so was Ghost World (& Crumb) director Terry Zwigoff.

Abbott, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 05:26 (seventeen years ago)

I voted Immortel. blue mutant lady was hawt.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 05:27 (seventeen years ago)

Cemetary Man (aka Dellamorte/Dellamore), adaptation of Dylan Dog.

contenderizer, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 05:40 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, he was in it, and so was Ghost World (& Crumb) director Terry Zwigoff.

Ah, okay, that explains the joke. I knew Crumb had a band, but I didn't know Zwigoff was in it.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 06:43 (seventeen years ago)

Anyway, vote soon if you want to, the poll will end today.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 12:05 (seventeen years ago)

Tintin and the Golden Fleece really pushes the underlying homoeroticism to the surface and not just because it was set in Turkey and Greece.

King Boy Pato, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 12:15 (seventeen years ago)

King Boy Pato, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 12:15 (seventeen years ago)

The REAL winner, by the way, is FOOTROT FLATS - THE MOVIE.

King Boy Pato, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 12:17 (seventeen years ago)

Oh gee, I'd love to see that one. I wonder if it's
available as a torrent somewhere...

(x-post)

Tuomas, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 12:18 (seventeen years ago)

They showed it on television here ages ago and I definitely had it on tape. I might even still have that VHS around the traps somewhere.

King Boy Pato, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 12:20 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Pretty much what I expected, though I thought American Splendor would get more votes.
