David R., Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:07 (seventeen years ago)

Haha, and yet I voted for it because the first rule of baseball is....

goole, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:11 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i wish i had a line item veto on the astroturf thing but i just c&p'd the dialogue and that's how he says it....

we have to be true to Crash's intent.

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:12 (seventeen years ago)

i voted small of a woman's back because i feel like that's the line that really let's you know yr in for some serious aging life baseball alcoholic zen shit...

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:13 (seventeen years ago)

you never believe for a second that he has even been in the same room as a susan sontag novel though. william hurt could have pulled that line off.

scott seward, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:14 (seventeen years ago)

I believe in Crash Davis

David R., Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:15 (seventeen years ago)

you never believe for a second that he has even been in the same room as a susan sontag novel though

isn't he in her house when he says all this?

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:17 (seventeen years ago)

btw this movie is about sex, not baseball. There are no good baseball movies.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:20 (seventeen years ago)

she defends sontag later on, but yeah i know what you mean, he seems like he just pull that out of his ass. crash doesn't seem like much of a reader.

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:20 (seventeen years ago)

fyi at the time of this movie's release, sontag had only written two novels, both of them published in the sixties.

G00blar, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:22 (seventeen years ago)

the hanging curve ball

mookieproof, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:24 (seventeen years ago)

"isn't he in her house when he says all this?"

he's in susan sontag's house???

scott seward, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:49 (seventeen years ago)

"There are no good baseball movies."

i like all baseball movies. and i don't even watch baseball. there are tons of good ones.

scott seward, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:50 (seventeen years ago)

the majors league

s1ocki, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:50 (seventeen years ago)

he just sees sontag on the shelf and throws it out there, like kaiser soze

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:51 (seventeen years ago)

scott, I mean movies that are about baseball specifically first and foremost.

The Bad News Bears is about win-at-all-cost Americanism and child abuse.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:53 (seventeen years ago)

my fave ron shelton movie might be dark blue though, actually. and then white men can't jump. and then bull durham. and then tin cup. and then cobb. play it to the bone was good too.

scott seward, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:53 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, but no movie is really about what it's really about. except for maybe cockfight.

scott seward, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:54 (seventeen years ago)

the sontag reference always felt to me like it was pretentious nonsense much more on the part of the writers than the character, and it nearly derails the whole speech, which is otherwise pretty great

kenan, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:54 (seventeen years ago)

"he just sees sontag on the shelf and throws it out there, like kaiser soze"

yeah, i dig it. he's just trying to impress to undress.

scott seward, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:55 (seventeen years ago)

I mean most of this monologue from him is like what he teaches meat about talking to the press!

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:56 (seventeen years ago)

s1ocki, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:56 (seventeen years ago)

said it better.

s1ocki, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:56 (seventeen years ago)

i think hollywood homicide is the only ron shelton movie i've never seen. it's a cop movie, but it's probably about baseball.

i just like dark blue so much cuz i wanna have babies with kurt russell.

scott seward, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:57 (seventeen years ago)

maybe if there was some establishing shot of him eyeing Sontag on the bookshelf.

i watched the famous Kon Ichikawa documentary Tokyo Olympiad once when I was high out of my mind on weed and it became a movie about the existence and survival of every living creature on the planet and i found it all to be heartbreakingly sad.

tipsy mothra, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 18:21 (seventeen years ago)

also, this is too a baseball movie. (baseball isn't just about baseball either, morbz.)

goole, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 19:00 (seventeen years ago)

Most baseball biopics are about baseball, but all of them suck.

(a semi-exception for Jackie Robinson playing himself in The Jackie Robinson Story, cept it of course self-censors like crazy, being made in '50)

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 19:17 (seventeen years ago)

dude a movie 'about baseball' would be like, that ken burns documentary

no hollywood baseball movies are primarily about baseball, because thatd be boring as fuck

deeznuts, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 19:20 (seventeen years ago)

admittedly 'The Splendid Splinter' was a great 40s flick illustrating the science behind ted williams plate approach though

twelve years pass...

this is the only bad part of the movie

I love the part where he gets in a fight at the bar with Meat and hands him the ball to throw at him then he misses by a mile

eleven months pass...

i forgot how funny Tim Robbins is in this. just a complete goofball

Heez, Wednesday, 30 March 2022 13:03 (four years ago)

one year passes...

Didn't care for this when it came out, never watched it again in--wow--35 years till tonight. No surprise, enjoyed it much more. I don't think it's the greatest baseball film ever made (the Ken Burns documentary for me; I'd pick Moneyball as my favourite narrative), but thought the three leads were at their best, and reading about "organization man" Woody Huyke in Pat Jordan's The Suitors of Spring recently gave me a greater appreciation of Crash Davis as an archetype. I really liked Robbins near the end pretending to misunderstand Costner: "fear and ignorance."

clemenza, Monday, 14 August 2023 05:09 (two years ago)

I watch clips of this so often on Youtube. Just a little mound visit time to brighten the day.
