a thread about rob brydon (human remains, marion & geoff, etc)

(couldn't find an existing thread, surprisingly)

after years of not giving a hoot about him i watched human remains, which was just incredible. same goes for marion & geoff, so well scripted and the episode where he drives through night to 'i'm on fire' by springsteen deserves awards, loads of em.

started watching some of annually retentive today, it doesn't match up to the shows mentioned above but it has its merits. one thing i don't get is how much the guests are aware of how they'll be portrayed when they agree to it - i mean dominic diamond got torn to shreds and i can't see him being the kind of person who'd be ok with it. this show also proves how lame gorman is and how fundamentally unpleasant jane moore is.

but really, can't say it enough - human remains is one of the funniest, darkest, smartest, most thought-out things i've ever seen. the bonus bits are brilliant too - julia davies constantly breaking into fits of giggles while rob brydon keeps in character 100%.

was keith barrat based completely on his own divorce? has he ever discussed this in interview?

also, is the film brydon did with coogan worth seeing?

His Uncle Bryn is fantastic.

Human Remains is the best thing Julia Davis ever did.

Best thing Rob Brydon ever did as well, come to think of it.

pretty much the best comedy series of the 21st century so far, i'd say. the level of effort that went into making something seem so natural, just amazing. was this his first ever tv appearance? and julia's?

NI, Friday, 25 July 2008 11:08 (seventeen years ago)

No, I knew who both of them were when I watched it at the time, although I couldn't say for sure exactly where. Julia Davis had been in Big Train before, I think.

I'm sure Dom will be along shortly to put us straight.

real talk?

you mean the tristram shandy thing? yes it's good fun, esp. at the end where they're impersonating al pacino

something about Brydon early on always put me off and i hated what i saw of the Marion&Geoff one-off prequel thing. he's good in Gavin & Stacey tho.

I first saw Brydon in one of those "Paul Meron wrecks a Galton and Simpson script" things. Although IMDB says he was also in three episodes of the utterly forgotten sitcom Barbra, so well done all involved.

totally underrated = director's commentary - you can pick it up for abt 3 quid in fopp

Ward Fowler, Friday, 25 July 2008 11:24 (seventeen years ago)

Rob Brydon is one of those comic actors who will make a show worth watching even when everything else around him is utter shit.

Matt DC, Friday, 25 July 2008 11:25 (seventeen years ago)

Director's Commentary was good, yeah, although really wish the concept had been made into a series by Adam and Joe as was originally planned.

The first series of Marion and Geoff is maybe the best comedy show of the decade so far.

how much of M&G is not Brydon alone talking to camera? or is it all like that?

blueski, Friday, 25 July 2008 11:29 (seventeen years ago)

wow, I agree with dom: marion & geoff season 1 is one of the best comedy shows of recent years; bittersweet, dark, and funny... hit the tone that nighty night swerved right past when trying to achieve

the later incarnation of rob brydon post-chat show host and panel guest I'm not so keen on

Here's Brydon in a previous incarnation as a satellite shopping channel host: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7Nv2m_PbIQ

What's that game show spoof thing he did? Starts with A.

The flat Williams had lived in was bought by Rob Brydon and Julia Davis for the writing of their dark comedy series Human Remains.

nate woolls, Friday, 25 July 2008 11:38 (seventeen years ago)

When it comes to Julia Davis, I think Nighty Night is better than Human Remains.

I agree that Marion & Geoff is probably the best sitcom of this decade.

Neil S, Friday, 25 July 2008 11:41 (seventeen years ago)

Second series of Nighty Night was unwatchable. First was ok though.

nate woolls, Friday, 25 July 2008 11:45 (seventeen years ago)

Unwathchable as in too difficult to watch? Or as in rubbish?

Neil S, Friday, 25 July 2008 11:46 (seventeen years ago)

i hear you re: m&g blueski, when it was first shown i couldn't bear to watch it - found it excruciating how he debased himself, and the set-up seemed really restrictive, but it works so well in showing how sharp and quick and brilliant rob's dialogue is. practically every line is a gem.

the summer party one was a bit weird, definitely not one to watch before the proper series. you should really watch the episode with the springsteen song, it's a 10 minute masterpiece. (i think it's ep 2?)

ive not checked out nighty night, it seems too dark. dark for the sake of being dark. is that right?

what is brydon working on now?

NI, Friday, 25 July 2008 11:49 (seventeen years ago)

Unwatchable as in rubbish.

Some of it's pretty close to the bone, and none of the characters are particularly likeable (either doormats or total bastards basically) but there are some very funny moments. Best taken in small doses possibly.

Neil S, Friday, 25 July 2008 11:52 (seventeen years ago)

yeah Nighty Night was fairly impressive but not actually funny. i just don't like dark comedy much at all tho.

blueski, Friday, 25 July 2008 11:52 (seventeen years ago)

rob brydon is bad

conrad, Friday, 25 July 2008 12:05 (seventeen years ago)

I like Brydon but the most recent thing I saw him in was one of those Comic Roots type shows, where he goes off to rediscover Wales and hone a 30min routine on Welshness to perform in some Swansea club - picking up material along the way from schoolkids and celeb mates. He died horribly and I had to turn off in embarrassment.

Michael Jones, Friday, 25 July 2008 14:43 (seventeen years ago)

I saw Human Remains after not thinking that much of RB - he can be funny, but often not as well - and it shows that he is hugely talented, definitely the best thing he's done (I didn't get into M&G so much). The combination of him and Julia Davies works so brilliantly. He's also the best thing in Gavin & Stacey, particularly in a role that could be overdone in so many ways, he keeps it sweet.

Nighty Night definitely worth watching (series one - forget about series two). Linder is brilliant, as is Rebecca Front.

nine months pass...

i just caught the first ep of annually retentive on dave (god help me) - REALLY funny and pleasingly nasty abt eg patrick kielty but v. clearly modelled on larry sanders (but then you cld say the office, thick of it etc etc are all post-sanders sitcoms in one way or another) - maybe better as a one-off, tho?

i think i was put off the julia davis by angus deayton?? but this thread has made me want to check those series out now, so gd!

Ward Fowler, Tuesday, 28 April 2009 23:07 (seventeen years ago)

five years pass...

Just watched Human Remains - absolute 100/10 masterpiece IMO.
