I'm hoping it hit something rather than there being some kind of fundamental problem with 747s.

Is that the luggage hold we can see through the hole? Fucking hell that must have been scary, good work that pilot.

Matt DC, Friday, 25 July 2008 09:14 (seventeen years ago)

Probably cargo, luggage normally goes in the back.

Ed, Friday, 25 July 2008 09:17 (seventeen years ago)

although with a depressurisation that dramatic, who knows.

Ed, Friday, 25 July 2008 09:20 (seventeen years ago)

jeez, someone had the presence of mind to film during the landing:

two years pass...

I see all these Qantas planes falling out of the sky, then I spend a good half hour fucking about with their stupid mobile check-in 'service' and suddenly it all becomes clear. Then I call to fix up the bollocksed check-in and wait 15 minutes to speak to a bloke who (a) won't let me finish a single fucking sentence (b) doesn't listen to a word I said anyway and suddenly realise I'd have been far happier to be on one of the doomed planes than dealing with this monumentally rubbish mobile fucking check-in system.

So essentially I spent 30 + 15 + 5 + 20 minutes conducting and fixing a shonky mobile check-in so that I would save myself three minutes at the airport. GO QANTAS.

Qantas is easily the most shit airline to deal with in Australia, y'know. Virgin Blue's technology is even worse (for now) but the people are far more pleasant to deal with and usually fix up shit with a minimum of fuss.

I don't count Jetstar or Tiger as "airlines", of course. More like "bogan transport service" and "catching a lift in your cousin's 1987 Toyota Corolla with stale cigarette butts left down the sides that magically flies" respectively.

Pro Bono Impersonator (King Boy Pato), Thursday, 25 November 2010 12:19 (fifteen years ago)

Ahh, competition, fixes everything.

And technology doesn't necessarily "fix" anything.

do yall reckon this is perhaps ~saying something~ about the spirit of australia?

calpolaris (nakhchivan), Thursday, 25 November 2010 22:11 (fifteen years ago)

Yes, our colonial forebears (Rolls Royce engines) are shithouse.

blanketly offensive posts (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 25 November 2010 22:25 (fifteen years ago)

then it's saying why can't australia develop its own aerospace industry rather than relying on defective old-world tech

calpolaris (nakhchivan), Thursday, 25 November 2010 22:27 (fifteen years ago)

ffs we make sheep and oil and khaki shorts and people who are interested in eating cookies, I think that's enough.

blanketly offensive posts (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 25 November 2010 22:32 (fifteen years ago)

people who are interested in eating cookies,

that's good enough for me

having flown in the U.S. a lot and having had the pleasure of flying qantas every day for about a week and a half four times in the last five years or so, may I please to to all Australian frequent flying friends, stfu, you have no idea how good you have it.

don't think there's anyone frequently flying itt, just AA uncharacteristically blowing his top over one website glitch and KBP talking about what it's like to phone people from work

i'm assuming that it's tity boi, host of the mixtape (sic), Friday, 26 November 2010 01:08 (fifteen years ago)

I flew internally for the first time in 3.5 years last month, but have always gone budget

So yeah look I've got no problems with Qantas as a bus-with-wings service but that fucken and I do mean fucken ridiculous check-in service wants a bloody good checking-in iirc

oh my God seriously you have no idea how good you have it oh my GOD. the best domestic flight experience in the u.s. is still being beaten to death with golf clubs compared to the worst treatment you're ever going to get from Qantas. <3 Qantas always have never had anything but great treatment from them, count your blessings my friend.

My standards are high.

I am currently stuck in Brisbane waiting for my third delayed Qantas flight this week.

blanketly offensive posts (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 26 November 2010 06:43 (fifteen years ago)

wait for the ones that aren't delayed instead

thrillionaire (electricsound), Friday, 26 November 2010 10:08 (fifteen years ago)

One hour delay at Brisbane after three consecutive and unrelated problems, 75 minutes on the tarmac at Melbourne. 5.5 hrs for a 2 hr flight. Currently in the world's longest taxi queue.

I quite enjoyed the dense sultana biscuit I got on my hour-long flight from Sydney to Melbourne on Monday. Meanwhile, I had to buy food on a four-hour flight from L.A. to Chicago today.
