Fear and Loathing. Awesome performance, awesome movie. Also, because the movie doesn't need three-dimensional characters, Depp's reliance on mannerisms and his limited "deep" acting skills are not really a problem there.

ZOMBIE DEPP

G00blar, Monday, 28 July 2008 09:53 (seventeen years ago)

Needs to be cast by the Coen guys.

Oilyrags, Monday, 28 July 2008 13:41 (seventeen years ago)

narrowed down to Todd, Brasco, Arizona Dream

Dr Morbius, Monday, 28 July 2008 13:43 (seventeen years ago)

Donnie Brasco.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 28 July 2008 13:44 (seventeen years ago)

Ed Wood (1994) .... Ed Wood

only one i dont hate

and what, Monday, 28 July 2008 13:52 (seventeen years ago)

You must have a lot of hate if you hate every other Johnny Depp film.

Tuomas, Monday, 28 July 2008 13:58 (seventeen years ago)

Had to vote for Fear & Loathing but the Ninth Gate deserves a lotta love.

Finefinemusic, Monday, 28 July 2008 14:00 (seventeen years ago)

I'm a Polanski fan, but have to disagree strongly there.

Oilyrags, Monday, 28 July 2008 14:01 (seventeen years ago)

Ninth Gate was very good for the first 2/3, but the ending was kinda flat. I would've expected more satanic Mayhem. Props to Depp though for making the 70s moustache cool again for the first time in ages.

Tuomas, Monday, 28 July 2008 14:03 (seventeen years ago)

Make that "mayhem" with a little "m" - I wasn't expecting the band to make a cameo apperance.

Tuomas, Monday, 28 July 2008 14:04 (seventeen years ago)

Perfect example of a good actor who chooses terrible movies I can barely watch.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 28 July 2008 14:32 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I'm generally in favour of Johnny Depp, but I always forget he hasn't been in many good films at all. I was looking through the list for ones I like and there's only three or four.

I went with Ed Wood.

chap, Monday, 28 July 2008 14:37 (seventeen years ago)

is this rating his best performance or his best movies?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 28 July 2008 14:38 (seventeen years ago)

is benny & joon as awful as it seemed back in the day?

velko, Monday, 28 July 2008 14:40 (seventeen years ago)

I dunno, but he did the Keatonesque physical stuff well, best thing about the film on first look.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 28 July 2008 14:43 (seventeen years ago)

Dead Man is best movie here - best performance is probably Ed Wood or Fear and Loathing (I voted for Dead Man anyway)

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 28 July 2008 15:33 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i can't pick - so many good performances in bad movies. Like I kinda want to pick him as Sands in "Once Upon a Time in Mexico" but then I don't really love that movie. Or I really love "Ed Wood" but think he's way better in "Fear and Loathing".

I have not seen Dead Man. I probably should.

Roz, Monday, 28 July 2008 16:14 (seventeen years ago)

!! Dead Man is great. apparently its a ripoff of a Rudy Wurlitzer screenplay.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 28 July 2008 16:16 (seventeen years ago)

Dead Man is a close second for me after F&LiLV. I hadn't considered before this thread how true it is that for a really terrific actor he tends to show up in really lousy movies. I think his close association with Tim Burton is largely to blame here, and now anticipate a bunch of posts explaining that it cannot be, because Tim Burton doesn't actually suck.

Oilyrags, Monday, 28 July 2008 16:22 (seventeen years ago)

Tim Burton post-Mars Attacks does totally suck tho

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 28 July 2008 16:26 (seventeen years ago)

yar it's one of those films I keep missing. time going backwards (as described in that Zombie Depp thread) = sounds like something I'd love.

xxpost

Roz, Monday, 28 July 2008 16:27 (seventeen years ago)

I pick Edward Scissorhands because it's the only good Tim Burton movie and because I'm a little teenage girl

sonderangerbot, Monday, 28 July 2008 19:14 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Friday, 1 August 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Worst movie is Blow. Best performance is probably Once Upon A Time in Mexico. Best movie is Dead Man (followed by Ed Wood.) A good actor who has made some terrible choices over the years.

Alex in SF, Friday, 1 August 2008 23:18 (seventeen years ago)

dead movie
benny and joon
edward scissorhands
donnie brasco

remy bean, Friday, 1 August 2008 23:20 (seventeen years ago)

oh for fuck's sake, you fucking stoners.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 2 August 2008 23:02 (seventeen years ago)

yay, stoners!

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Saturday, 2 August 2008 23:08 (seventeen years ago)

i'm glad that "donnie brasco" got as many votes as it did.

Eisbaer, Saturday, 2 August 2008 23:10 (seventeen years ago)

Fear and Loathing would have worked so much better as a 'straight' movie rather than the hallucinogenic-fantasia-snoozer. (Have I mentioned that I don't much care for Terry Gilliam?)

milo z, Saturday, 2 August 2008 23:11 (seventeen years ago)

i like f&l and all but bill murray's HST >>>>>> johnny depp's HST.

J.D., Saturday, 2 August 2008 23:14 (seventeen years ago)

Watching F&L is like listening to someone describe the time they took ten hits of acid in never-ending detail. It's been years since I read the book (must correct that soon), but I don't remember the drugs being the point.
