ILX Fantasy Football League 2008-09

Hello everyone. Would it be heresy to suggest doing the free Guardian FFL this year instead of the official Premier League one? I like the look of the scoring system and formations there, plus they might actually have cracked the perennial Fantasy League problem of making defensive midfielders worthwhile.

Matt DC, Monday, 28 July 2008 11:53 (seventeen years ago)

Mmmm, ten different formations.

Matt DC, Monday, 28 July 2008 11:54 (seventeen years ago)

will have a look- the premier league one is good, but the unlimited transfers get on my wick.

darraghmac, Monday, 28 July 2008 12:03 (seventeen years ago)

i'm sure many of us will participate in both

blueski, Monday, 28 July 2008 12:11 (seventeen years ago)

two weeks pass...

is there an ilx friends league then?

cozwn, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 16:19 (seventeen years ago)

Aye, count me in for it if there is. My Dean Windass-inspired mob will kick all before them (not really).

ailsa, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 16:20 (seventeen years ago)

i haven't checked how the scoring works here but will assume that stuffing Boateng and Park alongside Ronaldo, Fabregas, Torres and Adebayor and having a subs bench of cheap ne'er-do-wells will not cause problems.

blueski, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 16:51 (seventeen years ago)

If people are cool with the Graun one I'll start a league this evening.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 16:52 (seventeen years ago)

yeah happy with guardian.

although has anyone also started a premierleague.com team?

i started a little league there with my flatmate and if anyone on ilx are super hardcore (bored enough) like me and want to do both sites, i'll start an ilx one there too (can be like rugby league v rugby union or something)

ken c, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 16:58 (seventeen years ago)

are people not just doing both?

just renewed the ILX league for new season - rejoin with the code 60160-28927

Matt DC, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 20:55 (seventeen years ago)

excellent stuff, just signed up. think this is gonna be good, i like the way they've set up the scoring system

spaghetti, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 21:15 (seventeen years ago)

I'm in

Bill E, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 21:38 (seventeen years ago)

Fuck it, I'm in this one as well.

The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:45 (seventeen years ago)

I'm doing a Guardian one with pals, so shall enter your league too (nice work on the password, btw)

ailsa, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:48 (seventeen years ago)

also LOL at Total Fretwork Solutions :-)

ailsa, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:51 (seventeen years ago)

I'm in, but aren't both leagues up and running? Do we need a thread merge or something.

Pete W, Thursday, 14 August 2008 10:11 (seventeen years ago)

Bump.

Matt DC, Friday, 15 August 2008 09:18 (seventeen years ago)

Only just noticed the Grauniad league. Have joined but too late for this weekends games. Don't know if I'll be able to cope with the pressure of running two different teams in different leagues.

Billy Dods, Sunday, 17 August 2008 19:34 (seventeen years ago)

i see that the guardians attempt at making the game more balanced and not too striker-centric has resulted in a game that is incredibly defender-centric. 5-1-2-2 it is then...

spaghetti, Sunday, 17 August 2008 22:21 (seventeen years ago)

forgot to join the gardian league oh well surely i can catch up one gmae

ken c, Sunday, 17 August 2008 22:32 (seventeen years ago)

still rusty at this though - in the premierleague one i forgot to set my captain so instead of deco it was van der sar :(

ken c, Sunday, 17 August 2008 22:34 (seventeen years ago)

berbatov, you've let me down

cozwn, Monday, 18 August 2008 10:54 (seventeen years ago)

Annoying Guardian rule of no automatic substitions means valiant spurs-humping carthorse David Wheater sat on my bench while hunchback frontman wunderkind Tevez was blocking a place with his argentinian grieving.

Pete W, Monday, 18 August 2008 10:57 (seventeen years ago)

can't believe I favoured reo-coker (10 pts) over g.barry (21 pts)

cozwn, Monday, 18 August 2008 11:01 (seventeen years ago)

I just plumped for the five cheapest possible players on my bench. Fuck substitions.

Matt DC, Monday, 18 August 2008 11:02 (seventeen years ago)

Would any FFL game have automatically subbed a defender for a striker anyway though?

Matt DC, Monday, 18 August 2008 11:05 (seventeen years ago)

don't piss on my fire matt

Pete W, Monday, 18 August 2008 11:15 (seventeen years ago)

Okay, just joined the guardian one now - a week late so as to give y'all a head start.

Wow Matt DC doing the biz.

ken c, Monday, 18 August 2008 14:01 (seventeen years ago)

manager of the week! if i hadn't missed a week i would have been top of the league

ken c, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 08:38 (seventeen years ago)

*shrug*

ken c, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 08:38 (seventeen years ago)

Blowing my pre-season budget on Cahill (injured and not playing), Fabregas (injured and not playing) and Berbatov (sulking and not playing) has proved remarkably unsuccessful so far. Even with automatic substitutions I've only managed to have 9 players each week.

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 08:53 (seventeen years ago)

I am playing a classic 'no strikers = the future' game seemingly. Every member of my team has outscored my strike force. Then again, lol Darren Bent.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 08:57 (seventeen years ago)

Never thought I'd see the day I was torn between putting Darren Fletcher or Phil Neville in my team.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 21:09 (seventeen years ago)

what about nicky butt???!??!?!

ken c, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 21:14 (seventeen years ago)

The lack of auto substitutions makes this game really very annoying (I've gone for Ian Ashbee, btw).

William Bloody Swygart, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 21:35 (seventeen years ago)

I've never been down with auto-substitutions. It's about foresight. Can't believe I'm already resorting to packing the midfield and clearing out all my Spurs players.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 21:37 (seventeen years ago)

clearing out all my Spurs players

Same. Had Bentley and Berbatov at the start of the season thinking they'd give me assists and goals aplenty only to find that Bentleys on the fucking left and Berbatov neither plays or signs for United. My own fault for entrusting a big chunk of money and 2 starting positions to that farce of a club.

spaghetti, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 21:45 (seventeen years ago)

two weeks pass...

I'm backing Berbatov to have great game vs Liverpool - I need it to counter shit start to season - why play did I have so many injured players in the damn team???

Bill E, Friday, 12 September 2008 04:12 (seventeen years ago)

why grammar so bad? Why did I have to play so many injured....

Bill E, Friday, 12 September 2008 04:13 (seventeen years ago)

I always do badly at the start, but I think this must be my worst ever start to a fantasy football season. Way to go two of three penalty missers in my team, don't think I've forgotten just because of the international break. You just throw away those points for me. Torres injured. USELESS!

Oh, I'm doing alright in the guardian one actually, but I keep getting confused as to which players I have in which team. I think trying to maintain two has actually been too much responsibility. I blame the board, frankly. And I actually understand the non-guardian one and have looked at it for more than five minutes. Pah! The comeback starts here! I put all my faith in you - Robinho, Berbatov and Walcott!

(Not really.)

Suedey 2, Friday, 12 September 2008 12:08 (seventeen years ago)

Having made some wholesale changes during the transfer window, I fully expect TIME FOR THE SEXING to "romp" toward the upper reaches of the table.

or to continue to languish in obscurity. whatever.

ShNick (Upt0eleven), Friday, 12 September 2008 12:56 (seventeen years ago)

Finally managed a 3 figure score tho have dumped Anderson for Petrov in the hope that he'll carry on his form. Watch him screw it up!

Bill E, Monday, 15 September 2008 05:00 (seventeen years ago)

two weeks pass...

Back on top. Martin Laursen is the best Fantasy League player ever.

Matt DC, Sunday, 5 October 2008 13:00 (seventeen years ago)

I knew i shouldn't have put Zaki on the bench.

Mr Raif, Saturday, 18 October 2008 14:52 (seventeen years ago)

two months pass...

somehow crept into second spot

FLEETWOOD COZWN (cozwn), Saturday, 27 December 2008 03:01 (seventeen years ago)

two months pass...

This is actually, finally, starting to get interesting as it bunches together at the top.

Teh Movable Object (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 28 February 2009 21:20 (seventeen years ago)

six months pass...

I knew I should have waited til after the international break to make any transfers, Arshavin's injury has left me with the bare bones squad, mind he hasn't exactly set the world on fire yet so maybe it's a good time to get shot of him.
