there's this friend of mine, she's GREAT. i mean i <3 her. but she IMs me

every

single

day.

even if i don't answer, sometimes TWICE A DAY.
"u there?" "hi!" "u back?"

it's gotten to the point where i don't answer even if i'm bored out of my mind, cuz it's the PRINCIPLE. don't BADGER me into talking to you.

one of these annoying but comforting friends. it's weird cuz i'm incredibly chatty and usually welcome it, but at a certain point, even i have limits.

::sigh::

I have a coworker who clearly has no idea how to stfu. When I work a full shift with her it's literally 8 hours of play-by-play on the particulars of her complicated social mileu and it's like dude I seriously seriously do not give a fuck about how your ex's bff is having drama with his own ex that you are now getting sucked into because "these fucking Arabs just pull me into all their bullshit cause they need me I'm like their mama bear and conflict manager" arrrrrrrrrrrrghliiojusdfa jhonasdo fij

also chronic interrupters/non-listeners but that's another thread

sleep, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 22:22 (seventeen years ago)

One of my coworkers does this. I've finally gotten to the point where he doesn't even try to talk to me (never make eye contact, where headphones when in common spaces, etc), but he loudly harangues all of my other coworkers the whole day long and they put up with it. Somehow they are able to tune it out?

Virginia Plain, Thursday, 31 July 2008 02:06 (seventeen years ago)

Ahh, I'm sort of a non-listener, but it's not for lack of trying. I constantly space out and have to come back to earth and go, "what? sorry, was somewhere else for a minute there." I hate it.

But yeah, non stop talkers, there's always at least one if not four or five of these at work I have to deal with from time to time. The absolute worst are the chatboxes whose names you don't even know but recognize your face from being around the store and just walk up to you and start yacking at length about the stinking banal minutia of whatever happened in their dept that day. Who the fuck are you and why should I care.

Surmounter, you could always block her, no?

stevienixed, Thursday, 31 July 2008 15:55 (seventeen years ago)

i could i suppose, i could.

this morning 2 women were playing tennis on the court right next to mine. they seemed very nice, but they were chatting about everything from theater to the salad dressing the blond just found that she like swears by.

sometimes people just need to keep their eye on the ball.

Surmounter, Thursday, 31 July 2008 15:57 (seventeen years ago)

although i did enjoy the salad dressing part, i only wish i overheard which one it was!

Surmounter, Thursday, 31 July 2008 15:57 (seventeen years ago)

Can you tell if you're blocked? Are there feelings to be hurt?

RabiesAngentleman, Thursday, 31 July 2008 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

no you can't tell. but sometimes it's tricky if you have like mutual buddies you know? or some people have some other screename they use. aim politics are very intricate.

Surmounter, Thursday, 31 July 2008 16:16 (seventeen years ago)

just block the bitch already.

i know, it's so ironic that i type a lot, and have friends who talk too much. i almost can't take it. the astuteness of your irony makes a mockery of me in the most OTM way possible :D

Surmounter, Thursday, 31 July 2008 18:43 (seventeen years ago)

stfu surmounter

quincie, Thursday, 31 July 2008 18:50 (seventeen years ago)

no, but thanks for the tip. you know what's funny about the internet? i can not stfu, if i don't want to, and you'll have to keep on living with that. EAT ME

Surmounter, Thursday, 31 July 2008 18:51 (seventeen years ago)

its worse when they want to hang out with you ever single day :/

CaptainLorax, Thursday, 31 July 2008 18:51 (seventeen years ago)

Srsly if you want to shoot yourself in the foot by making an issue out of how irritating and not-very-bright seeming you can be on the internet, be my guest. It doesn't seem like a good self-preservation strategy, though.

Laurel, Thursday, 31 July 2008 18:53 (seventeen years ago)

Maybe it's a creative way of telling natural selection to get fucked, what do I know.

Laurel, Thursday, 31 July 2008 18:54 (seventeen years ago)

Laurel, are you talking to me? I'm not sure why you go out of your way to be nasty, especially since I'm always really friendly with you, and I met you in person and thought you seemed like a really nice girl.

If you want to take it there, though, that's fine, I don't have to treat you with respect.

Personally, I don't find myself irritating, and I do think I'm bright. But that's just me.

People who feel compelled to read and comment in each of the ten threads when they find the starting of them so unappealing: C/D?

Upt0eleven, Thursday, 31 July 2008 19:00 (seventeen years ago)

(roundabout way of sticking up for Surmounter, in case that's not clear)

Upt0eleven, Thursday, 31 July 2008 19:00 (seventeen years ago)

Here's the thing: I read and post on ILX quite rarely these days precisely because of surmounter and his ilk. So any suggestion that I frequently make a big deal of such a thing is misplaced.

quincie, Thursday, 31 July 2008 19:01 (seventeen years ago)

you don't post on ILX because of me and my ilk? what kind of ilk is that?

Surmounter, Thursday, 31 July 2008 19:02 (seventeen years ago)

AIM:blocking::ILX:killfile

dan m, Thursday, 31 July 2008 19:03 (seventeen years ago)

luckily i project a semi-hostile aura so no one really interacts with me unless they have to. the people that know me better i never mind talking to, unless i can't in which case i say "sorry, busy" and they understand.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 31 July 2008 19:04 (seventeen years ago)

aura? wtf?

chicago kevin, Thursday, 31 July 2008 19:04 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, it's fine, I mean at this rate I'm going to be killfiling him sometime next week anyway. It's more a matter of just putting in my vote for his behavior being ill-conceived and something I would like to see less of in any community I engage with. Not like it's going to change anything.

Laurel, Thursday, 31 July 2008 19:04 (seventeen years ago)

chicago kevin's gone new age

Mr. Que, Thursday, 31 July 2008 19:04 (seventeen years ago)

i refuse to acknowledge that line.

xpost.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 31 July 2008 19:34 (seventeen years ago)

What the hell, people. For what it's worth, I have no problem at all with Surmounter. I take threads like this as just kind of blowing off steam. It'd be annoying if it was melodramatic or attention-seeking (like a certain deeznuts), but it's more or less light-hearted, as with most of Sur's posts. I did chuckle at Mr. Que's initial comment, because it's true that Sur is rather chatty himself, but I have to disagree with all of the remarks about him being a "boring douchebag" or his behavior "ill-conceived."

jaymc, Thursday, 31 July 2008 19:35 (seventeen years ago)

i think he's just a young dude with a positive attitude, which i find kinda refreshing

^^^

jaymc, Thursday, 31 July 2008 19:35 (seventeen years ago)

for the record I got pulled out the "douche" after sur shot it at my better half. The boring part requires no such justification.

quincie, Thursday, 31 July 2008 19:37 (seventeen years ago)

*Surmounter is not a boring douchebag

*Mr. Que may be a boring old douchebag--yet to be determined

*Cheddar is OTM, esp. w.r.t. bacon and pork products

Mr. Que, Thursday, 31 July 2008 19:37 (seventeen years ago)

he's not an accredited zoologist, nor does he hold a degree in any of the environmental sciences. He is simply an enthusiastic young man with a sixth grade education and an abiding love for all God's creatures.

I like lots of threads because I chose a job that's not stimulating enough to keep me busy all day and I can't just sit here and sleep, unfortunately... but anyway it seems you guys all talk to much, D! ;)

I have a coworker - our office receptionist - who will start talking to you as you walk by and get UBER PISSY if you brush her off, and make sure you know for the rest of the day (in some case, weeks.) The bitch of the matter is that her desk is between everyone else's desk and the washroom/entrance so if you want to leave to catch a bus or rush to pee you damn ewll have to think of a quick snappy closing remark to whatever she says, and RUN to the door otherwise she will continue to talk for (I am not exagerrating) a full 5-10 minutes. Sometimes when I come in in the morning, she traps me there and my boss walks in a few minutes later and it looks like I'm late, but really I'm just a verbal prisoner. Ugh.

Today I got a ten minutes lecture on why tap water is so gross and she will only drink bottled water. We're in fucking TORONTO, not pulling water out of the well in our backyard near the pigpen, yanno? It's fuck 2008 lady, STFU!

it's got nothing to do with the above picture.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 31 July 2008 19:48 (seventeen years ago)

I have the opposite work problem, which is that I am non-chatty and have apparently never gotten particularly great at office socialization -- spend a couple years in a job, and this becomes sort of a self-fulfilling thing where you're just not in the chat loop. Apparently there is something that goes on with my face/personality in office and school settings that reads as "aloof" and lets me slip quietly around doing my work without too much engagement.

nabisco, Thursday, 31 July 2008 19:55 (seventeen years ago)

Apparently there is something that goes on with my face/personality in office and school settings that reads as "aloof" and lets me slip quietly around doing my work without too much engagement.

this is what i meant to say in my original touchy-feely-new-agey post.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 31 July 2008 19:56 (seventeen years ago)

This actually worked out for me great in grad school, because when I'd talk to people socially they'd seem really pleased about it, and usually say something along the lines of "I would see you in X class, but you always seemed kind of serious and aloof, like you had something else going on." ("Something else" = "full-time job / extreme lack of sleep")
