Could I take the liberty of asking you for some advice.
I am an extremely keen writer who possesses one single and strong aspiration to break into print journalism. My name is J4mes C0ngd0n and I am 22 years of age. I have recently graduated from University with a BA Hons in English Language and Media. As part of my degree, I undertook an advanced journalistic module. I achieved a first (80%), in this module, and have had the article put forward for publishing.

I have been on a number of journalistic placements and have worked with Best Magazine, Closer Magazine (for which I conducted my own interview with the director of Cyprus airways, in order to write my own piece). I have also worked with a small medical publication called Mediscript. Writing for a number of small online publications, I have been able to acquire skill skills for writing, and a rigorous eye for detail. I will also be embarking on a placement with the Barnet Times in December. As a chief reporter for my University magazine, (as well as being one of the main people responsible for it's launch), I feel I have experience, but maybe not enough yet.

I have been able to acquire skill skills for writing

Doesn't exactly demonstrate a rigorous eye for detail, does it? See also "it's launch."

Tell him to enrol on an adult literacy course and come back when he is able to read and write.

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 31 July 2008 13:11 (seventeen years ago)

With some clear Punk overtones and an almost annoyingly catchy 'metal-like' riff, it's the kind of track that prompts me to jump around the living room in my Primark underpants

koogs, Thursday, 31 July 2008 13:50 (seventeen years ago)

Are you going to reply to this, Dom?

Pashmina, Thursday, 31 July 2008 13:55 (seventeen years ago)

I suppose I should, but I have no idea what to tell him. Other than "become an attractive blonde posh girl"

The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:04 (seventeen years ago)

Train as a landscape gardener?

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:07 (seventeen years ago)

I guess think of instances where you've fucked up, and tell him "don't do this"?

Like, the only advice I have from my vanishingly brief stint as a music tech writer is "don't slag off one of the magazine's major editors in your opinion piece"

Pashmina, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:08 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, alternatively "learn a trade where there is a skills shortage"

Pashmina, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:09 (seventeen years ago)

A skill skills shortage surely?

Tom D., Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:11 (seventeen years ago)

dom's original gut-feeling advice is pretty spot-on though.

CharlieNo4, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:16 (seventeen years ago)

Then again, maybe there is an accredited course in "skill skills" which is being proferred in disused scout huts academic halls across the land that I just don't know about.
