Fantastic story, 10/10
― The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Thursday, 31 July 2008 18:47 (seventeen years ago)
Before we condemn this apparent bully, we should remember that "ladettes" are often more agressive and inclined to provoke fights than men of similar ages. They play the agressor in the (almost) certain knowledge that most men will still not hit a woman. In this case she clearly got it wrong. In the age of so much knife crime, maybe she should be grateful she just got punched..!!
- Gary Ali, Cobham UK, 31/7/2008 10:29
^^^good point, well made
Cannot condone what this man did, but, she did not use water she used a coloured liquid, he may have thought that she had ruined his t-shirt. She took things too far, he went further. If she had not been there, it would not have happened. They are both in the wrong, not just him.
- Claire, T Wells UK, 31/7/2008 11:33
I'm not supprised he was angry, water is one thing cos that dries but she's stained his white shirt!

Gangs of youths then ran amok, threatening the public, flashing knives and causing riding school children as young as five to be thrown from their horses . . . One man, aged in his early 20s, was shot by police with an electric stun gun after he set his pitbull-type dog on an officer.
Well, that water fight went to shit real fast-like.
xp also in the pictures her red "fizzy drink" is in a bottle labeled SPRING WATER. Plus guy in background in first pic is like "lol WAHT??"
― Pancakes Hackman, Thursday, 31 July 2008 18:52 (seventeen years ago)
I suppose punching that girl was disproportionate but considering she assaulted him first with a fizzy drink, it isn't an entirely unjustified response. I wouldn't describe him as a thug for retaliating. We want equal rights girls, so expect a boy's response! Maybe she will grow up and think twice about being a Facebook herd animal.

ffs...
It is one of the last taboos of social commentary that we are not allowed, ever, to suggest that a battered wife has deserved her fate, let alone 'asked for it'. So I won't.
But when we extend that to prevent anyone saying that a battered wife does nevertheless have a responsibility for her own safety - and that of her children - it becomes a taboo too far. So I will.

Ha, ha. Brilliant. This one really does tick all the Mail's boxes, doesn't it?
We've got…
Chavs! <CHECK> Terrified bystanders! <CHECK> Injured bystanders even! <CHECK> And they're tiny children! <CHECK> On ponies! <CHECK> Internet networking peril! <CHECK> Bullying! <CHECK> Violent teens! <CHECK> Riot! <CHECK> Affray! <CHECK> Besmirching the memory of the sainted princess! <CHECK> Wasting valuable police time! <CHECK> Innocent horseplay turns to tragedy! (the "you'll be laughing on the other side of your face when you put someone's eye out" angle) <CHECK> Fizzy drinks! <CHECK> Decline of Western civilisation! <CHECK>
Can still imagine the reporter coming back with the story getting a bollocking though. "Look, you said there were about 250 there, and you didn't bother to check if at least one of them was an illegal from Eastern Europe? Get out of here!"

That line about the kids as young as five being thrown from their horses was also in the Metro.
If social networking sites start marketing their own "advanced hydration products" I may well be tempted to participate in a Facebook-water fight.
― Just got offed, Sunday, 3 August 2008 00:18 (seventeen years ago)
I'm surprised we haven't heard from the parents of the little kids who were thrown from their horses, and as far as I know there's been no confirmation of any of them breaking their bones, and yet it's being repeated everywhere, cribbed from what I guess is the same story.
― Ned Trifle II, Sunday, 3 August 2008 06:28 (seventeen years ago)

The problem is that we all want to share everything with everyone, whether it's a party, the fact we've broken up with a partner or the fascinating news that we're planning to see Mamma Mia! that night. If you're a teenager or in your early twenties, you no longer celebrate your birthday with friends and family, you share the occasion with millions on Facebook. If you think that Britney Spears is being treated unfairly by the media, you video yourself having a tearful tantrum and stick it on YouTube (and get a TV show as a result, as happened in the States recently). And if you've smacked a Formula One boss's bottom, you immediately tell the News of the World.
How can people be getting paid to write horseshit like this?

Police feared others were carrying knives after park users reported seeing men "flashing" their weapons.
Two things about that second paragraph:
1)The use of the word 'others' is odd. Does this mean that the police weren't especially worried about the gangs of youths who were running amok, flashing their knives, and causing riding accidents, but were deeply worried by the possibility that other youths had knives? Or am I misreading it, and the police actually feared that other horses were carrying knives?
2)The speechmarks around "flashing" would be better around "weapons".
