I don't understand "I swear"

people will say "I swear on my/my family's/my mum's life" and if they do people will automatically accept their word

do you do this? if someone swore on their mum's life, would you accept their word? are you willing to swear on anything to get people to accept what you're saying?

If it was someone I knew and had some faith in, then yes, someone swearing would make some difference. Swearing on their mother's life would make even more difference. I know, it seems rather quaint in these profane times.

And no, I don't think I'd swear something that was a lie, unless it was obvious I was joking. Certainly not on my mother's life.

Anyone who resorts to the "I swear on _____" argument is in deep shit. At least in my experience, in most cases you only have about 10 seconds of substantial argument before the other person thinks you're uppity. Why waste half of the time on a swearing pact that the other person may or may not even take seriously?

My experience is that anyone who says "I SWEAR... ON MY MOTHER'S LIFE!!!" is a lying fucker, and the very next thing out of their mouth will be total bullshit porkies.

I'd probly accept that someone saying this was telling the truth maybe about 20 years ago. These days I'd be dubious about anyone giving a fuck about the lives of others in their family so thats all I have to say.

Do you really think people care less about the lives of their family members than they did 20 years ago or are you just taking the piss?

Alba, Friday, 1 August 2008 10:23 (seventeen years ago)

a bit of both i guess. It does seem that there's less respect for family values these days though, or perhaps i'm limiting my knowledge to just the idiots around my area.
