So, some of you had great suggestions in the last thread that will be encompassed in this one. the rule is that the film has to be the first sequel to the original film (reboots do not count, but TV movie sequels can, like Whatever Happened to Rosemary's Baby?

WHICH TURD BOMBER FELL THE FURTHEST FROM THE STANDARDS SET BY THE FIRST MOVIE, OR WAS JUST OUTRIGHT A STINKY TURD ON ITS OWN RIGHT, REGARDLESS OF THE FIRST MOVIE?

where are Psycho II and Faraway So Close?

Dr Morbius, Saturday, 2 August 2008 20:22 (seventeen years ago)

I actually enjoyed Psycho II, even if it wasn't remotely the movie the original was.

Psycho III was pretty lame, however.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 2 August 2008 20:23 (seventeen years ago)

Major League II in a walk and a half.

Mr. Snrub, Saturday, 2 August 2008 20:47 (seventeen years ago)

No City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly's Gold?

Mr. Snrub, Saturday, 2 August 2008 20:48 (seventeen years ago)

lol I WAS GOING TO PUT IT ON THE LIST but figured it would get replies like "omg it isn't like the first one was that great!"

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 2 August 2008 21:01 (seventeen years ago)

Blair Witch Project 2: Book of Shadows

^^^^
better than the first one

milo z, Saturday, 2 August 2008 21:22 (seventeen years ago)

There are a lot of bad movies here, but a good number of them are sequels to movies that weren't that great to begin with. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 might get my vote. It's really one of the most insultingly bad movies I've ever seen. Which, given the genre, is pretty sad.

Deric W. Haircare, Saturday, 2 August 2008 22:28 (seventeen years ago)

yea, I hated it too. lots of people love it because of the intentional parody/humor, and Grand Guignol-esque style, but I guess i hate it because of how truly awesome the first one was without having to plant its tongue in cheek.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 2 August 2008 22:33 (seventeen years ago)

Shrek 2?

Mackro Mackro, Sunday, 3 August 2008 01:38 (seventeen years ago)

Grease 2 is fucking terrible, the only redeeming thing in it is michelle pheiffer in tight pants

there was a sequel to the Birds????

akm, Sunday, 3 August 2008 02:07 (seventeen years ago)

it was a made-for-Showtime tv movie

latebloomer, Sunday, 3 August 2008 02:09 (seventeen years ago)

I think Blues Brothers 2000 is the worst of these that can't be enjoyed on some level as camp

some dude, Sunday, 3 August 2008 02:18 (seventeen years ago)

camp is INTENTIONAL

Dr Morbius, Sunday, 3 August 2008 02:21 (seventeen years ago)

Godfather Part II. Isn't is just the last five minutes of the first movie, stretched over two hours?

Chuck_Tatum, Sunday, 3 August 2008 05:01 (seventeen years ago)

Of the choices here, Blues Brothers 2000 or Speed II should take it. As with all the other film polls I rant on, I have to shout about THE ONES THAT ARE MISSING. WHERE ARE?

More American Graffiti
Beyond The Poseidon Adventure
Highlander II
The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training
Be Cool
Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights

And for fucks sake, the sequel that launched a thousand jokes:
Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo

Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 3 August 2008 05:27 (seventeen years ago)

If I could vote for any, it would be Highlander II. Not only a bad movie, but complete negates the first movie.

Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 3 August 2008 05:28 (seventeen years ago)

Technically 2010 should be on here too (though I vaguely like it)

Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 3 August 2008 05:29 (seventeen years ago)

Scratch that, I'd rather vote for Clerks 2

Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 3 August 2008 05:30 (seventeen years ago)

Or 102 Dalmatians

Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 3 August 2008 05:31 (seventeen years ago)

Also missing:

Queen of The Damned
Return Of The Swamp Thing
The Crow: City Of Angels
Species II
Problem Child II
Cannonball Run 2
Another Stakeout
The Cutting Edge: Going for the Gold

Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 3 August 2008 05:34 (seventeen years ago)

Aliens

shieldforyoureyes, Sunday, 3 August 2008 05:50 (seventeen years ago)

I know it's a gimme, but I've gotta go with Weekend at Bernie's 2. Not that the first one left a legacy to be tarnished or anything, but fuck.. you mean Bernie is still dead/alive? After how many years? I think I saw part of it once. As I recall, the plot involved some sort of voodoo incantation, courtesy of the same actor who played the comic-relief gay dude in Mannequin (speaking of which, Mannequin 2 was overlooked in this poll. I never saw it, but the premise must be almost on par with Bernie's 2. Who fucking writes this shit? Does anyone watch it? Maybe they should resurrect both franchises with Mannequin vs. Bernie)

Pillbox, Sunday, 3 August 2008 06:03 (seventeen years ago)

Poltergeist II. The original is just perfect and then this one ruins everything.

Eric H., Sunday, 3 August 2008 06:38 (seventeen years ago)

What about the Jon Voight classic SuperBabies: Baby Geniuses 2?

Ned Trifle II, Sunday, 3 August 2008 06:52 (seventeen years ago)

xpost: But at least we have Poltergeist II to thank for this album cover:

Pillbox, Sunday, 3 August 2008 06:52 (seventeen years ago)

not to mention, the HR Geiger tequila worm sequence

Pillbox, Sunday, 3 August 2008 06:56 (seventeen years ago)

Highlander 2 would be a contender for me, I remember that as being utter drivel, whereas the first is an utter classic.

Blair Witch Project 2: Book of Shadows

better than the first one

Rong.

SeekAltRoute, Sunday, 3 August 2008 07:42 (seventeen years ago)

Speed 2 is amazingly bad. Jan de Bont should never have directed again.

Batman Returns is the best Batman movie.

abanana, Sunday, 3 August 2008 07:43 (seventeen years ago)

i voted for evan almighty which i didnt see but you know

J0rdan S., Sunday, 3 August 2008 08:02 (seventeen years ago)

matrix in a walk, i think.

very confused as to what for a few dollars more is doing on here.

darraghmac, Sunday, 3 August 2008 13:35 (seventeen years ago)

Godfather II? are you kidding me?

Granted, I am NOT one of the ones who believes this is superior to the first Godfather, as I am not a huge fan of the Hymen Roth plot, but did you REALLY just say Godfather II is the worst 2nd film in a film series of all time? You realize you just said it was worse than Air Bud 2?

Wow.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 3 August 2008 13:52 (seventeen years ago)

it's called trolling

latebloomer, Sunday, 3 August 2008 13:53 (seventeen years ago)

Mannequin 2 is in this poll...it's probably just hard to find since it's not alphabetized

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 3 August 2008 13:54 (seventeen years ago)

Aliens

Nope, sorry, I purposefully left this one off because it was awesome. So it's the complete opposite of its claustrophobic horror predecessor. It's still awesome Cameron-action!

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 3 August 2008 13:55 (seventeen years ago)

dude don't get sucked in

latebloomer, Sunday, 3 August 2008 13:57 (seventeen years ago)

it's hard to tell who is or isn't trolling on ILX, given that amazing films/albums/etc get torn down here on a daily basis.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 3 August 2008 13:57 (seventeen years ago)

fwiw i see any disagreement with my own opinions as trolling

latebloomer, Sunday, 3 August 2008 14:01 (seventeen years ago)

no Temple of Doom mentions, eh? granted it isn't the worst, but the dropoff from Raiders is huge (and the surge from Temple to Last Crusade is also huge).

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 3 August 2008 14:04 (seventeen years ago)

Ghostbusters 2 sucked but just glad Terminator 2 isn't here.

blueski, Sunday, 3 August 2008 14:16 (seventeen years ago)

"two in the box, ready to go, we be fast and they be slow"

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 3 August 2008 14:17 (seventeen years ago)

To clarify, Godfather II is clearly not the worst sequel of all time (clearly!), but I don't think it tells us anything new about the characters -- De Niro stuff excepted -- that we don't already understand from the first movie. Its lush, but (to me, anyway) it's kind of pointless from a story point of view.

Up at the top meanwhile, I'd probably go for Oceans Twelve.

Chuck_Tatum, Sunday, 3 August 2008 14:45 (seventeen years ago)

I've been a fan of the Godfather novel by Mario Puzo. Part of me kind of wishes that they had restored some of the missing characters from the novel, and ended the first movie shortly after Michael kills Sollozzo, and then begin the second movie where the first left off and end it the way the first ended.

I wouldn't say it didn't tell us anything new about the characters though. Michael Corleone was pretty ruthless at the end of the first Godfather, but it was planned with the help of his father. And while he did have his sister's husband whacked, well...he led to the death of their brother, and family of course takes precedence in that case. And he was very respected by those in his circle.

Godfather II, however, really showed Corleone's gradual disillusionment from the people around him and showed him evolving into more of a monster. Killing Rizzi was one thing--he may have been married to Connie, but he wasn't blood, and he contributed to Sonny's death. But Fredo was family (and also a move that Puzo disagreed with).

The first Godfather ended with Michael doing what he needed to help the Family survive. The second Godfather was Michael doing more than was necessary for self-serving purposes (killing an already about to die Hyment Roth).

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 3 August 2008 14:51 (seventeen years ago)

I think we also got some moments from Tom Hagan that were missing from the first movie due to time constraints (but were present in the book).

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 3 August 2008 14:55 (seventeen years ago)

Arguably better than the first in the series (in some case because the first one is terrible too):

Escape from L.A.
Grumpier Old Men
Friday the 13th Part 2
Chronicles of Riddick
Batman Returns
Hostel Part 2
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

Eric H., Sunday, 3 August 2008 15:03 (seventeen years ago)

Grumpier Old Men

Neither movie was a masterpiece, but this one made little sense since they made up at the end of the first movie. Wasn't particularly funny either.

Friday the 13th Part 2

Really boring. I kind of like the first with the crazy mother and all, but every subsequent one was dull. And no hockey mask, just a paper bag!

Batman Returns

Really? Devito's scenery chewing just became hard to take after a while. I could at least take Nicholson's in the first movie since he was the joker.

Temple of Doom

Kate Capshaw nearly singlehandedly ruined this one for me, but the story itself wasn't all that.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 3 August 2008 15:09 (seventeen years ago)

there can be no credible argument for Temple Of Doom being better than Raiders

blueski, Sunday, 3 August 2008 15:44 (seventeen years ago)

Paging one of the approximately 8,000 ILX threads where Morbs or me (or Alfred, I think) calls Temple the pulpier (and thus more accurate) of the Indy movies, at least until the new one.

Eric H., Sunday, 3 August 2008 15:49 (seventeen years ago)

I was going to say Temple before I even clicked on this. Watched all three of the original series before the latest one came out, and couldn't believe what a mess it was. Speilberg actually thinks Indian food consists of bugs and monkey brains?

Soukesian, Sunday, 3 August 2008 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

It pains me that Temple of Doom could win, place, or show in a poll that includes among the choices The Butterfly Effect 2, The Rage: Carrie 2 and Mannequin 2: On the Move.

Eric H., Sunday, 3 August 2008 15:56 (seventeen years ago)

..And no hockey mask, just a paper bag! - actually, the bag was a burlap gunnysack. FWIW the hockey mask did not surface until the 3rd installment, when Jason found it in a garage, conveniently located next to a harpoon gun.

Pillbox, Sunday, 3 August 2008 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

Grease 2 is the sweetest musical ever. Anything that uses the word "mental-stration" in a song/dance number is about fucking perfect.

I voted for Look Who's Talking, Too.

Abbott, Sunday, 3 August 2008 20:49 (seventeen years ago)

Nowhere near enough discussion as to how shitty Men In Black II was here.

The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Sunday, 3 August 2008 20:50 (seventeen years ago)

lol, yea. truthfully tho....that isn't why I didn't like the movie.

just...nothing happens in any of the Fridays.

if I want to see a good slasher, Sleepaway Camp is all I need

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 3 August 2008 20:50 (seventeen years ago)

BTW, Abbott, I apologize for leaving off D2: The Mighty Ducks

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 3 August 2008 20:50 (seventeen years ago)

Oh my god Look Who's Talking, Too was directed by Amy Heckerling! Honey, what happened that you had to do that?

Abbott, Sunday, 3 August 2008 20:51 (seventeen years ago)

I'll admit I didn't see Speed II...we actually bought a ticket when I was 16, then snuck into Face/Off instead.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 3 August 2008 20:56 (seventeen years ago)

I never saw either of 'em, but surely 2Fast 2Furious deserves at least a mention for its ridiculous title.

Oilyrags, Sunday, 3 August 2008 21:04 (seventeen years ago)

ghostbusters II is probably the worst imo

omar little, Sunday, 3 August 2008 21:12 (seventeen years ago)

Speilberg actually thinks Indian food consists of bugs and monkey brains?

I think yer either taking the piss, or use a monkey brain.

Dr Morbius, Sunday, 3 August 2008 21:24 (seventeen years ago)

BTW, Abbott, I apologize for leaving off D2: The Mighty Ducks

pft more like D2: The Mighty Ducks is the BEST second film in a series

salsa shark, Sunday, 3 August 2008 21:31 (seventeen years ago)

2Fast 2Furious is a highly entertaining little flick! Doesn't top the first (which is a personal favorite), but a great thing to watch on a lazy afternoon.

Abbott, Sunday, 3 August 2008 21:45 (seventeen years ago)

I still haven't seen Tokyo Drift; anyone wanna give me the haps on that one?

Abbott, Sunday, 3 August 2008 21:45 (seventeen years ago)

Thank you, Marvel Comics:

Deric W. Haircare, Sunday, 3 August 2008 21:58 (seventeen years ago)

And thank you, BBcode, for continuing to suck and for omitting my Conan the Destroyer image:

Deric W. Haircare, Sunday, 3 August 2008 22:00 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, go die.

Deric W. Haircare, Sunday, 3 August 2008 22:01 (seventeen years ago)

I'm trying to imagine what might have possessed a 10-year-old me to spend $2.00 on the House II comics adaptation. Because I totally did.

Deric W. Haircare, Sunday, 3 August 2008 22:03 (seventeen years ago)

^^^ lol I had that House II comic as well. Totally forgot about that until I saw the JPEG.

Pillbox, Sunday, 3 August 2008 22:43 (seventeen years ago)

Jurassic Park II: The Lost World (such a let down at the time)

I bet these suck, but when you compare how much more suckier than the first one, they might not suck as much: The Odd Couple II, Grumpier Old Men, Look Who's Talking, Too, Caddyshack II

this did suck: Evan Almighty, Speed 2: Cruise Control

this was pretty good: For a Few Dollars More
and I like Anaconda 2 because the snakes got supersized

thats enough for now

CaptainLorax, Monday, 4 August 2008 03:45 (seventeen years ago)

I dont remember anything about the odd couple, grumpy old men, or look whos talking though. I just bet they suck as well as the sequels. Caddyshack 1 was ok.

CaptainLorax, Monday, 4 August 2008 03:47 (seventeen years ago)

i remember Sting II was one of the first VHS films my parents rented, and I watched it thinking it was an okay film. Then I watched the first one and though wow Sting 2 is shitty compared to this masterpiece.

gone with Grease 2, although lots should win from that list.

Ste, Monday, 4 August 2008 08:24 (seventeen years ago)

forgot the Care Bears Movie 2.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Friday, 8 August 2008 02:51 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Thursday, 14 August 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants 2, now in theaters!

Oilyrags, Thursday, 14 August 2008 23:12 (seventeen years ago)

there can be no credible argument for Temple Of Doom being better than Raiders

Maybe not better but as good? If you sort of squint out Kate Capshaw and the racism? I mean...how bad can a movie be with a line like:

"Mola Ram...prepare to meet Kali! ...IN HELL!"

Doctor Casino, Friday, 15 August 2008 00:09 (seventeen years ago)

No Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets?

j.lu, Friday, 15 August 2008 00:50 (seventeen years ago)

matrix in a walk, i think.

Seconded. What an absolutely incoherent mess. My theory is they farmed out the script to 20 different scriptwriters for treatment and just pasted together the result in random order. "The overlong rave goes before or after the neverending fight in the courtyard?"

zaxxon25, Friday, 15 August 2008 17:49 (seventeen years ago)

The correct answer is Cube 2: Hypercube.

danzig, Friday, 15 August 2008 18:41 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Friday, 15 August 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

I think "Hackers 2/The Kevin Mitnick Story" may be the BEST second film ever made.

Abbott, Friday, 15 August 2008 23:03 (seventeen years ago)

beverly hills cop 2 for me please. a *DISGRACE* after the first.

piscesx, Saturday, 16 August 2008 00:07 (seventeen years ago)

one year passes...

This thread is brilliant. Have there been any more rotten sequels in recent years?

piscesx, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 07:00 (fifteen years ago)

nah hollywood stopped makin em

Spiney G. Porcupinegarden (some dude), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 08:26 (fifteen years ago)

hangover 2 on the horizon

z-rogatis (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 08:27 (fifteen years ago)

also 'meet the fockers' isn't on this list

z-rogatis (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 08:27 (fifteen years ago)

S.Darko surely deserves a mention, a truly rotten sequel.
