Hottest/Most Gorgeous/Cute-as-a-Button-est Maggie Gyllenhaal Performance

Hollywood's most lovable starlet of today? I'm sold. Totally forgot she was in Cecil B. DeMented, wow.

Predicting Secretary or Stranger Than Fiction to walk this - both parts where she manages to pull off being a self-actualized subject in control of the situation while also representing a hopeless fantasy of boring dudes everywhere, that a beautiful woman is going to drop into your lap and exactly fulfill your needs. Stranger Than Fiction is particularly egregious for locking on to the notion that gorgeous, independent, "edgy" women actually have nothing better to do than work to break uptight square guys out of their bubble and put up with all their whining along the way. Oh, if only!!

But...may the best Mags win!

haha she was in cecil b demented??

goole, Monday, 4 August 2008 16:21 (seventeen years ago)

yes she's great in it! I think she's the one with the Fassbinder tatoo...?

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 4 August 2008 16:22 (seventeen years ago)

independent, "edgy" women actually have nothing better to do than work to break uptight square guys out of their bubble and put up with all their whining along the way. Oh, if only!!

^^lol. tempted to vote for Confessions... since it's my favorite film on this list (that i've seen. and there are LOTS on this list I haven't seen), but I can't remember being particularly bowled over by her performance.

will, Monday, 4 August 2008 16:22 (seventeen years ago)

I don't even remember her being in it.

Alex in SF, Monday, 4 August 2008 16:23 (seventeen years ago)

Criminal is the Nine Queens remake, no?

Alex in SF, Monday, 4 August 2008 16:24 (seventeen years ago)

She was in Adaptation?

Alex in SF, Monday, 4 August 2008 16:25 (seventeen years ago)

She was excellent in Sherrybaby; she probably didn't get the Oscar nod that year because Ryan Gosling was already getting the junkie nomination.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 4 August 2008 16:26 (seventeen years ago)

Also perfect in the awful Happy Endings.

She's done better work than her big bro.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 4 August 2008 16:26 (seventeen years ago)

She was excellent in Sherrybaby

Yeah, but I will lol if that gets votes for "hottest/most gorgeous/cute-as-a-button-est" perf.

jaymc, Monday, 4 August 2008 16:39 (seventeen years ago)

Her performance was fine, but Sherrybaby was a meh movie.

Alex in SF, Monday, 4 August 2008 16:43 (seventeen years ago)

I think I was maybe a bit unfair to Secretary above - surely the movie works by making you identify with her, not with James Spader? Or is it a Rorschach blot story?

Doctor Casino, Monday, 4 August 2008 17:23 (seventeen years ago)

- I heartily approve of the commentary.
- I kind of want to vote for the animated surly-teen Maggie in Monster House
- But that's not hugely different from surly-teen Maggie in Donnie Darko, which, if the question is about cute-as-a-buttonness, I do kinda like that one
- But instead I might register what will probably be the sole vote for Mona Lisa Smile, which I don't really remember, except for its not being that great, and Gyllenhaal being kind of a life-raft of likability within its stormy seas

nabisco, Monday, 4 August 2008 17:38 (seventeen years ago)

I liked Stranger Than Fiction better than any of the others, but it didn't have much to do with Gyllenhaal.

milo z, Monday, 4 August 2008 17:40 (seventeen years ago)

Note: she struck me as infinitely cuter and cooler-looking in person than on film, which is saying something, because I think she looks quite nice on film

nabisco, Monday, 4 August 2008 17:40 (seventeen years ago)

I feel like ILE needs a royal rumble poll w/ Zooey D, Katie Holmes, Maggie G and Mandy Moore

milo z, Monday, 4 August 2008 17:41 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, Maggie G out of those easily! I haven't seen recent Mandy Moore pics though - has she continued on the path towards cuteness that she was staking out a couple years ago?

Katie Holmes is a total non-entity.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 4 August 2008 17:47 (seventeen years ago)

was just talking about the unsexiness of the last two batman movies despite having sexy people in them. i mean i'm fine with this b/c i don't think sexiness is the point, possibly on the outskirts of the mind of the director but obv not central. or maybe it is a dif kind of sexiness? hm. wld be a pretty subtle kind... i didn't even find c bale hot in it, even tho he is. and i don't find m gyllenhaal sexy or hot in it at hall even tho i think she is, in other movies, e.g., secretary, which in drenched in sex/y

rrrobyn, Monday, 4 August 2008 18:13 (seventeen years ago)

I'm a little confused. She wasn't in Batman Begins, right? So are we voting for Maggie in just TDK, or for the character?

Mordy, Monday, 4 August 2008 18:45 (seventeen years ago)

haha, that's a goof - I retroactively inserted her into Batman Begins. Vote based on TDK.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 4 August 2008 18:48 (seventeen years ago)

we're talking abt maggie. i was talking abt last two batman movies for a minute. then i was talking abt maggie.

my wife and our (gay) buddy I saw DK in the theater with would DEFINITELY DISAGREE re: Bale and sexiness

i think you are all crazy

rrrobyn, Monday, 4 August 2008 18:54 (seventeen years ago)

but not that crazy

rrrobyn, Monday, 4 August 2008 18:57 (seventeen years ago)

The movie's environment was not exactly boner growing season.

Maggie is kind of a cipher to me.

Abbott, Monday, 4 August 2008 19:24 (seventeen years ago)

i want to re-ask this question

if i was going to do a "hottest 'indie' actress" poll who else would be on it besides maggie g? zooey deschanel?

Very cute in Donny Darko, less so in everything else I've seen her in as it's become a very knowing kind of cuteness.

Stranger Than Fiction is a FUCKING AWFUL film, BTW.

chap, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 01:00 (seventeen years ago)

It's a Will Ferrell film. Why the surprise?

James Morrison, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 01:02 (seventeen years ago)

It was lauded more than your average Will Ferrall film, and the concept was potentially interesting.

Capitaine Jay Vee, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 02:42 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, she isn't very attractive. what the hell is this thread going on about. maybe its more of an european fetish since she has really weird facial features.

Gyllenhaal: 'I find water sexy'
Tuesday, August 5 2008, 06:18 BST

By Simon Reynolds, Entertainment Reporter
Gyllenhaal: 'I find water sexy'

Maggie Gyllenhaal has confessed that she finds the ocean sexy.

The Dark Knight star admitted that her attraction to water is unexplainable.

She is quoted as saying: "Being around water, and in water, makes you feel so good. The ocean is really sexy, and the wilder and wavier the better!"

The actress, who has a daughter with Rendition star Peter Sarsgaard, added that she thinks it is important to be spoiled by her other half.

She said: "I think it's the job of your lover to adorn you. My boyfriend gives me jewellery and it always looks great. Think about it - this person adores you. This is how he wants to see you.

"This is what he wants to see on your neck, your hand, your ear. A man sometimes can see what you can't. What is unconsciously beautiful or sexy about you is often the most compelling."

blueski, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 13:02 (seventeen years ago)

She must have a point with that last part, because the way she's so self-conscious about how "unconsciously beautiful" she is to her man is kind of off-putting to me.

some dude, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 13:30 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, blueski's quoted text about 40% increases my crush (ocean) and 60% depletes it (jewelry).

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 13:38 (seventeen years ago)

I remember reading an interview she gave after filimg Secretary where she was near-regretful about doing the nude scenes and how she'd probably never do one again, and then she goes on to do like a dozen more. How do I know this becase the internet.

goole, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 13:44 (seventeen years ago)

I mean, I would happily adorn Ms. Mags with anything she wants but the whole "jewelry proves your man loves you" thing is way way too dumb.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 13:49 (seventeen years ago)

p.s. what are the other nude scenes in?

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 13:50 (seventeen years ago)

havent seen her in all that much, but so great in the dreadful Happy Endings

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 18:22 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, blueski's quoted text about 40% increases my crush (ocean) and 60% depletes it (jewelry).

DISAGREE

i was at this hotel where there was a LGBT conference thing going on a week or two ago & when i went outside for a smoke there were these two guys macking on each other in a really geeky, philosophical way & one guy said to the other "when i go to a forest or something i basically get down on my knees, sexually"

it was very awkward & i gave them a very awkward look & then they left

btw, did you guys really think Stranger Than Fiction was THAT bad? I have some babbling analysis of it lying around my hard drive at home, may look it over and post it if it's actually of any substance...

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 7 August 2008 13:11 (seventeen years ago)

i kinda liked it
i guess you have to be in a mood (there are some pretty cringey parts)

rrrobyn, Thursday, 7 August 2008 14:55 (seventeen years ago)

wtf corny indie fucks talking shit about JEWELRY.

christ.

amateurist, Friday, 8 August 2008 08:48 (seventeen years ago)

It's odd: I think of myself as liking Maggie G a lot, but of all those films listed at the top, I've only seen ... The Dark Knight; Donnie Darko; and maybe 40 Days and 40 Nights (unless that's a different film from what I'm thinking it is - I don't remember her in it anyway).

Well I'm gonna vote Donnie Darko, though I can't really remember what she looked like in it.

the pinefox, Friday, 8 August 2008 08:58 (seventeen years ago)

amateurist: Elaborate please?

Doctor Casino, Friday, 8 August 2008 12:47 (seventeen years ago)

do you have something against women liking jewelry?

amateurist, Friday, 8 August 2008 15:25 (seventeen years ago)

jewellery sucks. i'm male btw.

blueski, Friday, 8 August 2008 15:29 (seventeen years ago)

She said: "I think it's the job of your lover to adorn you. My boyfriend gives me jewellery and it always looks great. Think about it - this person adores you. This is how he wants to see you.

The implication is that if they don't want to see you covered in jewelry, they don't adore you. This strikes me as wrong on several levles, chiefly because it equates romantic feeling with consumer spending, and with the decoration/burdening of women's bodies. I have no beef with people who wear jewelry, but the implication that I (as Maggie's prospective mate) must be a creep if I don't want to buy her jewelry is a total turn-off.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 8 August 2008 15:30 (seventeen years ago)

Technically, D.C., she's not saying it has to be jewelry, just that it is in her case, and that it's more abstractly the job of the lover to bedeck you in something.

I'm more interested in ...

Maggie Gyllenhaal has confessed that she finds the ocean sexy.

-- when's the sentencing scheduled for?

nabisco, Friday, 8 August 2008 17:38 (seventeen years ago)

In Nebraska that's a minimum sentence of 15 to life

nabisco, Friday, 8 August 2008 17:39 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, yes, that would be the MINIMUM.
