I first came to him via the films, esp "Rose Hobart" ... but I've seen a lot of the boxes etc, including that show that toured a couple years ago. Anyone read that bio Utopia Parkway?

oh, there ya go.

otoh, I think the films are best seen projected to "get" what he was doing... but everyone can't be at Anthology Film Archives when they show them 3 times a year.

Read "Dime Store Alchemy" by Charles Simic - short pieces that attempt to "write" Cornell's boxes. It's a really great little book with nice pictures.

he was close to a total recluse, right? his boxes really have that obsessive hothouse vibe.

(oh yeah, that's covered in the dennis cooper piece)

Was he gay? Does anyone know?

admrl, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 21:43 (seventeen years ago)

He had a late-life thing with some midtown waitress; I don't know enough, otherwise.

C

IIRC he was decidedly heterosexual, but had zero social skills about it. But I could be misremembering.

He is C beyond C.

yes, Dr. Morbius, I read the bio ten years ago or so and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

and since you guys were wondering, it clears up the mysteries of his sexuality pretty well, also. As I recall, Casuistry is otm as far as that goes.

In the book I think it describes how at one point this female admirer of his work made a point of deflowering him...can't recall the details now, though; sorry

deflowering joseph cornell, starring maggie gyllenhaal and johnny depp. directed by lasse hallstrom.

tipsy mothra, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 23:52 (seventeen years ago)

only stative verbs work in that construction - oh deflowering as a state of being

youn, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 23:58 (seventeen years ago)

two years pass...

loving the movies! thanks ubuweb!
