this shit!!! please to post album covers etc that obviously used this crazy junk from back in the day

I remember flipping through MACUSER or MACWORLD and always being like WHOA AWESOME at the full-pagers that used to get run for this stuff back when obvious photoshoppery was amazing and fresh. 10 years from now the Tarantinos of tomorrow are going to be wrecking this up for their opening titles, you watch and see

bonus points for any and all examples of the KPT Spheroid Designer on trance comps from 94-on

it must have felt so bad-ass when you had a macho enuf power macintosh to run this properly

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 08:52 (seventeen years ago)

It was really all about the Power Goo, whatever the hell that was.

KPT BRYCE

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 11:55 (seventeen years ago)

i used to play around with this shit on my dad's overpowered Mac Quadra all the time -- the 'texture explorer' plugin held a particular fascination for me.

This is for the tacky 90s raytracing pigeonhole rather than KPT, but someone spent days tweaking the angles on the rays and then stayed up all night waiting for this to render and thought they were the king of future art (and hell, I would've done too, at the time):

I don't think that scan does justice to quite how "oh, 1996-paws" the finished product is, even.

As for KPT, I just put a bunch of late-90s computer magazines in the recycling. KPT got a glowing review declaring it the future of everything, and in every issue after that every photo has this unnerving oversaturated tint with extreme foreshortened poses and drop shadows. Strangely I didn't really notice at the time.

when i was maybe 12 years old I remember emailing kai krause at his AOL screenname asking for photoshop advice -- well, it was actually more of a fan letter written on the pretext of asking advice -- and actually got a response from him. i remember thinking it was a huge deal, and to this day remains the only fan letter i've ever written that gained any reply.

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 13:47 (seventeen years ago)

shortly thereafter I designed a 2" button for the local Cathlic diocese's annual march (LOL young believer) and used at least 4 different KPT textures in the design.

Catholic, even

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 13:54 (seventeen years ago)

i remember used to love playing with the winimages demo i had free from a magazine cover. oh the plasma/lightning effect paws.

ken c, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 13:56 (seventeen years ago)

Can we see a picture of this button, elmo?

Casuistry, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 13:57 (seventeen years ago)

Cas, I have no idea if any of them still exist, but I remember exactly what it looked like. The day of the march I remember seeing a Hispanic family who attended our church had rendered a version of my design in magic marker on a piece of posterboard. This, too, was a big deal to me.

I wasted much of an extracurricular photography class in middle school sitting around messing with KPT

mh, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 14:06 (seventeen years ago)

i don't expect it's as recognizable but i also loved this magazine, from around the same time:

^^^, i associate this whole visual look and feel to watching other kids goof around on this in "Technology" class (aka wood shop with added computer modules that you rotated through). mostly they played Need for Speed II, but also this.
