There seems to be this general opinion, at least in the US, that wearing sweaters is something kind-of wussy and fey. I, a lover of fine sweaters, was always surprised by this: I mean, when it's cold out, a sweater keeps you warm! My friends through the years always described me as "sweater-wearing", as a joking epithet. Does this behavior have an origin in ... rockism???

I have directed this question at Jordan before, who claims not to wear sweaters, and lives in Madison, WI. He said something about a coat. Which is, yeah, prolly adequate for warmth alone, but that seems like bread and water. Why not layer? Add another piece to the outfit? Accessorize!
Oh no I just answered the thread question.

i have never once encountered this attitude
― max, Thursday, 7 August 2008 10:48 (seventeen years ago)
Neither have I, truth be told. Is is some kinda east coast thing? I grew up in texas, where sweaters are so unnecessary that there aren't any around to think of as wussy, and now I live in Chicago where there are about four months of the year where if you're not wearing a sweater, you're probably stuffing newspapers in your shirt and hoping you live through the night. So again, no judgment.
― kenan, Thursday, 7 August 2008 11:06 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, me neither. But then I live in Norway, where you'd be a fool not to have sweaters and scarves (I seem to recall us having a similar thread about the latter)
Is there a genuine difference between sweaters, pullovers and jumpers, or do people tend to use those words interchangeably?
― Øystein, Thursday, 7 August 2008 11:11 (seventeen years ago)
In the US, I think a jumper is definitely the kind of thing we'd just call a sweater, and a pullover is the kind of thing we'd also call a sweater a of of the time, but is more like a hoodie without the full front zipper, in which case we'd call it a hoodie.

― kenan, Thursday, 7 August 2008 11:27 (seventeen years ago)
Hm, dictionary.com sez this about Pullover: "–noun 1. Also called slipover. a garment, esp. a sweater, that must be drawn over the head to be put on."
Makes sense to me. Though, uh, I hadn't heard of "slipovers" before. GIS reveal these fearsome things: http://www.kilkeelknitwear.com/Cricket_slipover.JPG

but is more like a hoodie without the full front zipper, in which case we'd call it a hoodie.
Either could also be called a sweatshirt.
I've tried the sweater thing, particularly after the fashion of the "jumper" man from Kenan's pic, on top of a collared shirt. I didn't look quite as dapper though. Some dudes can look very handsome in that look. Some can't.
― kingkongvsgodzilla, Thursday, 7 August 2008 12:03 (seventeen years ago)
Maybe it has something to do with sweaters being knitted by grandmas and mummies and made in terrible colors and given to men for Christmas with much schmaltzy holding it up to the poor guy's shoulders to predict whether it'll fit?

There are manly sweaters availablte but in general sweaters tend to be more delicate. You can't exactly go running through the woods climbing over rocks, hills, and fires in a $400 piece of cashmere.

SOmehow I have lost all but two of my sweaters on vacations over the past two years, including my faves beautiful charcoal cashmere cardigan that has been my standby for years in both "damn I am comfortable" and "damn if I don't look especially attractive in this piece of clothing." It is tearing my heart two pieces, esp. since it is only like six weeks until sweater weather here!
Missing u cardigan.

― Abbott, Sunday, 28 September 2008 21:28 (seventeen years ago)
I have a sweater addiction problem. There are three giant wooden crates full of sweaters in our bedroom and a mountain of sweaters above it that don't fit inside the crates anymore. I could wear a different one every day for a month and not repeat. It's *bad*. I think I got this way because I"m a pack rat, buy them at thrift stores for not much money, and receive them at Christmas, and treat myself to ones that I like, and snoop for weird old ones on Ebay. Now I'm like one of those crazy old ladies with a million cats, but with sweaters.

On the "wussy" question, I do recall that back in the 90s hipster queers used to refer to wealthy assimilationist gay men as "sweater queens", so there's more background support for the notion. But dammit they are warm and cozy so fuck that.
Wearing a sweater means that you are wearing a sweater. And that's all.
― Drew Daniel, Sunday, 28 September 2008 22:07 (seventeen years ago)
I think sweaters remind people of Mr Rogers and Stuart Smiley, rendering them eternally wussy.
HOWEVER, as they are now experiencing a wave of popularity among black & latino kids from the bronx & harlem, i think they will lose their stigma.
as a sidenote, middle aged people in NYC do this thing (much like how they say "on line" when they mean "in line") where they refer to sweatshirts as sweaters. it makes me confused.

"on line" to mean "in line" is an NYC metro area thing. If you're from the area you say it, including ole burty himself. kinda like "plain pie" for pizza.
But yeah, the dapper sweater look definitely seems popular with the black youth.
― burt_stanton, Sunday, 28 September 2008 23:09 (seventeen years ago)
Starting around Halloween I tend to wear sweaters full time until the end of March. They are warm. I spend a lot of time in a poorly heated bus next to an open window (it's always open regardless of the weather, to improve my ability to see my side mirror). I don't wear them for looks, but I think they look pretty good, too.

I'll say this much for sweaters: they're not terribly durable as a shell material. I don't think I've a single sweater that doesn't have a snagged thread unravelling somewhere from bark/brush or simply leaning against a brick wall.
― derelict, Saturday, 29 November 2008 18:55 (seventeen years ago)
Just re-bought an LL Bean sweater that has been a staple of my winter-wear ever since Pancakes Hackman mentioned them upthread. But for the first time, I noticed this blurb on their website.
This versatile wardrobe essential is destined to be the hardest working sweater in your wardrobe – wear it on its own or layer it over a tee or button-down for midweight warmth and classic style.
Can a sweater be worn on its own? It has never occurred to me not to layer them.
