Internet Advertising dumb questions

So lately I get emails with people offering to put ads on my blog, but I'm never really sure whether to say yes or not, and they are shit at explaining themselves so I thought I'd ask some of you guys.

EG the latest one: "MMN will become the largest music content and music ad network, and you are one of the ~30 bloggers whom we would like to launch the network with in mid-August. MOG will show it’s appreciation to launch partners through a $1CPM guarantee for all ad impressions made available to MMN. This means that even in instances where we may not have an ad campaign available to run on your blog, you will still make money"

No idea what CPM means or how this works even after googling it, and after asking the guy numerous times.

MMN (Mog Music Network) is basically a sort of centralised network of blogs as far as I can tell.

But apart from that specific example, what is the best way to control ads on my blog? What do I need to be wary of? And am I right in assuming, as I have often done to date, that the money to be made is so pathetic as to make it not worth the flashing gifs or banners on my site?

cost per thousand - i.e., $1 for every thousand impressions if i am reading this correctly.

so yeah, what do you average as far as page views? enough that you'd make any money? how long does it take you to get to 1000 views?

how much traffic do you get? $1 cpm pretty much sucks, and you'll prolly get really dreadful ads. may as well just do google ads, or join something like blogads.com

whats your blog?

i joined a pretty big "womens" network.... and get all kinds of ads ranging from Bank of America to Midori Liquor. My favorites are the Tampax ads though!!

thanks guys, my site is here

I get around 140,000 page views a month, about 10,000 unique visitors. What's "page impressions"? Sorry, I did say dumb questions!

I'm laughing so much I think I might actually break through the laughter into tears, that is the funniest joke I have ever seen, seriously I can't stop laughing.

i believe this would be counted on total page views, not unique ones, because the ad would load each time the page is viewed. impression = view, i.e. how many times the ad is viewed/made an impression on the reader. therefore you'd make ~$140/month with a cpm of $1.

Ah okay I understand, that's not bad money I guess, but definitely worth checking how the ads look before agreeing. Do companies tend to design ads to fit your site?

Ronan, Sunday, 10 August 2008 16:20 (seventeen years ago)

it would make sense for them to tailor the ads so that your readers would be inclined to click on them, but at a cost that low, they are probably not very targeted. i'd definitely recommend checking out sites on which they already run ads to get a feel for what they do.

tehresa, Sunday, 10 August 2008 16:26 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, definitely request a preview - imagine they could do a mock-up of how the page would look with their ad in place - before you agree to anything, but that's a pretty generous deal.

also didn't realise anyone was still doing CPM ads anymore.

Upt0eleven, Sunday, 10 August 2008 16:28 (seventeen years ago)

think that if they are paying you $1cpm, they are perhaps charging advertisers anywhere ≤$3-5pm (that's a random guess), which is pretty cheap. think about what kind of advertisers are looking for really low cost ads.

Thread title reads like a headline.

six years pass...

has anyone else noticed that webpage advertising has gotten incredibly direct lately? i just went to an allmusic.com page that had advertisements for vinyl i recently looked at on ebay, a graphic novel i recently looked at on amazon, and the WWE network. under the vinyl auction it said: "it's not too late!"
