LOL 2008

I don't really use LOL that much, because I don't really laugh out loud at the internet that much. But for those that do, roughly what percentage of the time that you use LOL are you actually laughing out loud? Note: smirking does not count as laughing out loud. If it did, I'd be L'ing OL all over the place.

Poll Results

50-74% (seeker of truth) 7

When I laugh out loud IRL I generally type this:

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

which is a decent approximation of the volume & intensity of my laughter in general.

Abbott, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:13 (seventeen years ago)

I am inconsistent. If I'm actually laughing out loud I will use LOL with "seeker of truth" levels of truth. If something doesn't make me laugh out loud, but makes me smirk REALLY HARD, then I will probably go with aaaaaahahahahaha.

Z S, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:16 (seventeen years ago)

i genui-LOLLED at that image. time was i would never lol unless i was laughing, except maybe for a sarcy or ironic lol here and there. lately they've been creeping in though, but i'm still close to a 100% truth levels.

Slumpman, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:19 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I think "lol college" and stuff like that is ok. It just bugs me when I'm AIMzing with an old high school friend and it's like

THEM: So what have you been up to the last 8 years?
ME: Oh sheesh, I don't know. Lots of stuff. Some of the old.
THEM: lol yah

YOU DID NOT LAUGH OUT LOUD AT THAT

Z S, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:23 (seventeen years ago)

do you guys ever have dreams where you are in-between sleeping and waking and your mind is writing some untold brilliant lost Simpsons script or some such and then you are literally laughing out loud in between falling back asleep? I have had that experienced multiple times, and last night, it happened again, within the context, of all things, a Laurel and Hardy film that was played out in my mind from start to finish at four in the morning.

i tend to use LOL to indicate where i would genuinely laugh were i having a face to face conversation

elmo argonaut, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:26 (seventeen years ago)

you can not hear me; therefore i laugh not

elmo argonaut, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:26 (seventeen years ago)

LOL is social lubricant

Edward III, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:28 (seventeen years ago)

lolbrication

Abbott, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:28 (seventeen years ago)

Dell, I had a hilarious dream week a few years ago, where I woke up my girlfriend THREE DIFFERENT TIMES in the space of a few nights, because I kept cracking up. The opposite of nightmares: LOLmares

Z S, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:28 (seventeen years ago)

bahahahaha

see?

Abbott, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:29 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think anyone EVER genuinely ROFLs

Abbott, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:30 (seventeen years ago)

sometimes lol is positive feedback for people who say funny things, so they will continue to say funny things

elmo argonaut, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:30 (seventeen years ago)

give the dog a LOL

Edward III, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:31 (seventeen years ago)

ZS you have five minutes to turn this into an awesome gif thread or you will forever be tainted in my eyes

Just got offed, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:32 (seventeen years ago)

Or ROFLMAO. Your ass has not fallen off!

At the same time, maybe we should loosen up. We don't want to turn into Amelia Bedilia.

Z S, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:32 (seventeen years ago)

xpost oh shit

Z S, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:33 (seventeen years ago)

i mean if we're taking msn/aim convos into consideration then i'm guessing we're all hovering at around roughly 0.5% if that

Just got offed, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:35 (seventeen years ago)

Unfortunately, I have to do the exact opposite of an awesome gif thread today (type up a fact sheet summarizing my boring ass white paper on THE FUTURE OF COAL AND ELECTRICITY).

But, I did hand my friend $15 last night to pay for a year of webspace where I can place all of my animated gif storiez in one place so that the people of the world can more easily sue me for stealing their copyrighted photographs and putting talking butts on them and the like.

Z S, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:36 (seventeen years ago)

My LOL is a bright shuddering peal of mirth that shivers the sky with delight

elmo argonaut, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:36 (seventeen years ago)

my ROFL is a great lazy beast lolling in bright meadows

elmo argonaut, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:37 (seventeen years ago)

I guess I was just thinking about how communication has gravitated toward online forums such as IMs and messageboards for so many people, and how it's weird that the most recognizable new "word" is a LIE most of the time!

Z S, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:38 (seventeen years ago)

what is elmo's LMAO i bet it's nice and earthy

Just got offed, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:39 (seventeen years ago)

i find it hard to believe anyone telling me about their laughing experiences online, even these new fangled *whole sentence* physical lols eg: jesus christ i shot tea out my eyes! or guyz i have just been sacked from my job.... for laughing so loudly!!

i propose a usb microphone that listens for and captures your laugh, embedding it automatically into the webpage or chat window.

Slumpman, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:39 (seventeen years ago)

It's like I say goodbye to you on the street, but instead of saying goodbye I say "I have to go mortgage my house now", and you say "Yeah I have to mortgage my house also"

Z S, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:39 (seventeen years ago)

lol does not mean laugh out loud... don't be gay

bnw, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:40 (seventeen years ago)

it means lots of love

Edward III, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:41 (seventeen years ago)

dell, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:44 (seventeen years ago)

we have neglected to mention that LOL is not used exclusively as an interjection

it is also a substantive noun (true lols) as well as an adjectival modifier (lol college)

elmo argonaut, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:45 (seventeen years ago)

also first name (lol creme)

Edward III, Monday, 18 August 2008 20:46 (seventeen years ago)

"Roger, this is No. 1 Niner. Sorry we got back to you late. We put Amelia Bedelia in the psych ward alone with the guy who throws his poop at everyone. He told her to "put your money where your mouth is" and she said she didn't have any, and then he gave her currency with fecal matter all over it. We're gonna need backup."

Z S, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 00:08 (seventeen years ago)

Too many pratfalls!

Abbott, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 00:15 (seventeen years ago)

you know, worrying if people are actually laughing out loud when they use the internet colloquialism "lol" is kind of aspies

The Reverend, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 06:00 (seventeen years ago)

25-49% but I'm kinda giggly

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 07:24 (seventeen years ago)

i like typing/reading lol cause in Dutch it means fun so it kinda makes sense to me. that said, i rarely LAUGH OUT LOUD but just sort of do huhuhuh with my mouth closed (when sitting behind the comp, IRL i am a laughing horse).

stevienixed, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 08:54 (seventeen years ago)

My use of lol is usually cynical or memetastic in some way. I've even started using it with a straight face at meetings.

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 08:57 (seventeen years ago)

as in 'nice to see John's email bringing the lols'

I do this (with music too), but when you slip out of the half-sleep state into being completely awake and realise that all of the hilarity was in Homer having fish instead of eyes, it doesn't seem so funny.

I usually reserve lol for being a dick, variations on "ha" for laughter, so I'm afraid I'm a liar too.

Merdeyeux, Friday, 22 August 2008 23:35 (seventeen years ago)
