Has any proposed change to an indefinitely repeating procedure been so head-smackingly obvious that it's been implemented *instantly* with no looking back?

Sports governing bodies, your own life, politics. Any examples?

Have you got any?

Tom D., Tuesday, 19 August 2008 10:45 (seventeen years ago)

wtf do you mean, Louis?

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 10:48 (seventeen years ago)

Perhaps try using the other hand?

"until now this was the only way to get juice from an orange..."

blueski, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 10:51 (seventeen years ago)

No! I've been thinking about the concept for a while. It seems that international sports councils tend to mull and dither over even the most blindingly obvious changes. I'm hoping people will supply examples where everyone has been all "Oh".

I mean, Nick, that for instance if someone suggested that the Royal Mail postal workers all had to wear fursuits, the CEO and board unanimously and instantly agreed to this, realising that the use of fursuits would infinitely improve their image, efficiency and well-being.

TAKE LESS DRUGS, LOUIS

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 10:53 (seventeen years ago)

I'm sure the postal unions would love that suggestion. While we're at it, I think policemen should be made to wear scuba diving outfits.

Like only putting sandpaper on one side of a box of matches?

Oof.

I think the adoption of the can opener after the invention of the can some years earlier met with unanimous assent.

The high jump: once the Fosbury flop was invented the traditional straddle technique completely died out.

StanM, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 11:04 (seventeen years ago)

Well done

Tom D., Tuesday, 19 August 2008 11:06 (seventeen years ago)

That's a good one Stan.

I would say overarm bowling in cricket but that isn't remotely the case (it was first introduced for women, believe it or not, because they were having trouble bowling underarm with their crinolines on).

Just got offed, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 11:07 (seventeen years ago)

Straddle didn't completely die out immediately though, it took a while, I'm pretty sure Eastern European high jumpers were still using the straddle in the 70s

Is this thread some kind of revenge for everyone insisting that deliberate handball on the goal line is considered cheating or something

I wonder how long it took for Oyster cards to be given the go-ahead.

Just got offed, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 11:21 (seventeen years ago)

Oyster cards are "head smackingly obvious"?

Matt DC, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 11:22 (seventeen years ago)

For some people. I still use tickets. Maybe one day I'll change to Oyster cards and it'll be head-smackingly obvious.
